A. pinnata showed a remarkable ability of taking up Cd from the external medium. Of the total Cd taken up by the test plant, surface adsorption was about 90%. Cd adsorption did not occur at a constant rate, however, an equilibrium was reached in 2 h. The uptake of Cd occurred at a constant rate. Test cations, including heavy metals (Ca, Mg, K, na,ni, Fe, Cu and Zn), inhibited adsorption as well as uptake of Cd. Cd adsorption was competitively inhibited by Cu, Fe and Zn, whereas Ca, Mg, K, na and ni caused non-competitive inhibition. Similarly, Cd uptake was competitively (Ca, Mg, Fe) or non-competitively (na, K, ni, Zn) inhibited by cations. Inhibition of Cd uptake by Cu was not wholly competitive

AIM： To study the effect of mucilage obtained from cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica （Cactaceae） on the healing of ethanol-induced gastritis in rats. METHODS： Chronic gastric mucosa injury was treated with mucilage （5 mg/kg per day） after it was induced by ethanol. Lipid composition, activity of 5＇-nucleotidase （a membrane-associated ectoenzyme） and cytosolic activities of lactate and alcohol dehydrogenases in the plasma membrane of gastric mucosa were determined. Histological studies of gastric samples from the experimental groups were included. RESULTS： Ethanol elicited the histological profile of gastritis characterized by loss of the surface epithelium and infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Phosphatidylcholine （PC） decreased and cholesterol content increased in plasma membranes of the gastric mucosa. In addition, cytosolic activity increased while the activity of alcohol dehydrogenases decreased. The administration of mucilage promptly corrected these enzymatic changes. In fact, mucilage readily accelerated restoration of the ethanol-induced histological alterations and the disturbances in plasma membranes of gastric mucosa, showing a univocal anti-inflammatory effect. The activity of 5＇-nucleotidase correlated with the changes in lipid composition and the fluidity of gastric mucosal plasma membranes. COnCLUSIOn： The beneficial action of mucilage seems correlated with stabilization of plasma membranes of damaged gastric mucosa. Molecular interactions between mucilage monosaccharides and membrane phospholipids, mainly PC and phosphatidylethanolamine （PE）, may be the relevant features responsible for changing activities of membrane-attached proteins during the healing process after chronic gastric mucosal damage.

The use of K2nbF7 as a probe solute for the cyclic voltammetric determination of oxide in FLInAK melts was studied and demonstrated. This method is based on a complex reaction and the peak current density of nbF72- reduction. The reaction constant was determined to be very large at 973 K. A cyclic voltammetric standard addition experiment was also employed to determine the amount of oxide in FLnAK melt. The oxide content of FLInAK melts is equal to the amount of nb(V) added minus the amount of nbF72- which is obtained from the voltammogram.

AIM: To evaluate the cellular synthetic ability of cytokines involved in pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions in patients with ***: Sixty-seven patients with AP (16 severe,51 mild) and 10 controls were included in the *** of whole blood were performed in samples obtained within the first 72 h from the onset of *** levels of interleukins (IL) 6, 8, 10, and TnF-α were measured at baseline and in the supernatant of cultures with (functional reserve) or without stimulation with ***: Basal levels of cytokines were significantly higher in patients with severe AP. A significant increase of all pro-inflammatory cytokines vs basal levels was observed in the supernatant after 24 h of whole blood cultures in patients, but not in controls. In contrast, IL-10 increased significantly in the supernatant of cultures only in patients with mild AP. Cells showed a statistically significant functional reserve for all IL in patients with mild, but only for pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with severe ***: A marked activation of immune system may be observed in patients with AP, being balanced between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with mild but not severe AP. A reduced functional reserve for the synthesis of IL-10 may be observed in patients with severe AP, which might lead to a worst prognosis.

Background:To assess the clinical outcomes of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens(ICL)with a central port throughout 7 years of ***:Eighty-four eyes of 52 patients were evaluated over a follow-up period of 7 years after V4c ICL ***(UDVA)and corrected(CDVA)distance visual acuities,refraction,intraocular pressure(IOP),endothelial cell density(ECD)and vault were ***:The mean postoperative UDVA(logMAR)was 0.04±0.11,0.13±0.19 and 0.17±0.23 at 1-,5-and 7-years,respectively(Pn CDVA(logMAR)remains unchanged throughout a 7-year follow-up period(0.02±0.08 and 0.02±0.08,at 5-and 7-years,respectively,P=0.2).At all follow-up visits,more than 95%of the eyes achieved a CDVA of 20/25 or better and more than 85%a CDVA of 20/*** the end of the follow-up(7 years),no eye lost more lines of CDVA,56 eyes(66.7%)and 28 eyes(33.3%)gained lines of *** 7-years,the spherical equivalent was−0.62±0.62 *** significant increase in IOP(>20 mmHg or an increase higher than 5 mmHg)occurred in any case throughout the 7-year of *** loss in ECD from the preoperative baseline at the last follow-up visit was 2.6%.no intraoperative or postoperative complications or adverse events occurred during the follow-up ***:The outcomes of this study show the long-term viability of the V4c ICL implantation as a surgical option for the correction of myopia.

AIM： To identify the anthropometric, metabolic and mood state in hepatitis C virus （HCV）-infected patients from the west of Mexico and to evaluate the effect of 13reathwalk （13W）, a combination of walking, synchronized breathing and focussed attention, on those patients. METHODS： In an experimental study, 17 patients with serological and molecular diagnosis of HCV, not receiving pharmacological treatment, were studied. One hour sessions of 13W were practiced 3 times at week for six months. Body composition was assessed by electric impedance. Biochemical profiles and insulin resistance （IR） risk was assessed by conventional methods. Mood state was evaluated with specific and open questions at the beginning and at the end of the program. RESULTS： Seventy percent of patients were overweight or obese, and 77% of the patients presented with IR at the beginning of the study. Improvements were observed at the 3^rd mo, and statistically significant differences were recorded at the 6^th mo using the fitness score （76 vs 83, P 〈 0.01）, in alanine aminotransferase （ALT）（106±93 U/L vs 59 ± 32 U/L, P 〈 0.01）, total bilirubin （0.09 ± 1 mg/dL vs 0.62 ± 0.2 mg/dL, P 〈 0.01）, ALT/ AST ratio （1.04 vs 0.70, P 〈 0.01）, triglycerides （165 ± 86 mg/dL vs 124 ± 49 mg/dL, P 〈 0.01） and the IR risk （4.0 vs 2.7）. Most patients （88%） indicated to feel better at the end of BW （P 〈 0.01）.COnCLUSIOn： Breathwalk has an important effect on body composition, lipid profile and liver enzymes. It is also easy, inexpensive and has a beneficial effect on metabolic and mood state in HCV patients.

Synthesis of few layer single crystal graphene grains on platinum by chemical vapour deposition

The present competition of graphene electronics demands an ef fi cient route which produces high quality and large area graphene. Chemical vapour deposition technique, where hydrocarbons dissociate in to active carbon species and form graphene layer on the desired metal catalyst via nucleation is considered as the most suitable method. In this study, single layer graphene with the presence of few layer single crystal graphene grains were grown on Pt foil via chemical vapour deposition. The higher growth temperature changes the surface morphology of the Pt foil so a delicate process of hydrogen bubbling was used to peel off graphene from Pt foil samples with the mechanical support of photoresist and further transferred to Si O2/Si substrates for analysis. Optical microscopy of the graphene transferred samples showed the regions of single layer along with different oriented graphene domains. Two type of interlayer stacking sequences, Bernal and twisted, were observed in the graphene *** presence of different stacking sequences in the graphene layers in fl uence the electronic and optical properties; in Bernal stacking the band gap can be tunable and in twisted stacking the overall sheet resistance can be reduced. Grain boundaries of Pt provides low energy sites to the carbon species, therefore the nucleation of grains are more at the boundaries. The stacking order and the number of layers in grains were seen more clearly with scanning electron microscopy. Raman spectroscopy showed high quality graphene samples due to very small D peak. 2D Raman peak for single layer graphene showed full width half maximum(FWHM) value of 30 cm-1. At points A, B and C, Bernal stacked grain showed FWHM values of 51.22, 58.45 and 64.72 cm-1, while twisted stacked grain showed the FWHM values of 27.26, 28.83 and 20.99 cm-1,respectively.
