Soil mineral nitrogen dynamics in fallow periods in a rainfed semiarid Mediterranean agricultural system

Rainfed agricultural systems in semiarid Mediterranean environments are subject to erratic but often heavy rainfall *** an agronomic practice,fallow periods can be included even within the existing European Union common policy for crop *** study aimed to quantify the effects of previous mineral fertilization on soil mineral nitrogen(n_(min))content and potential nitrate leaching during no-till fallow periods of crop *** Leaching Estimation and Chemistry Model(LEACHM)was used for soil n_(min)prediction after *** fallow periods,n_(min)measured in the soil profile increased by an average of 125 kg n ha^(-1),whereas the model showed an average increase of 95 kg n ha^(-1).The amount of nitrogen(n)leached was estimated to be 11–38 kg n ha^(-1).The n balance simulated using LEACHM might differ from the actual *** calibrated LEACHM underestimated soil n_(min)after a drought period followed by soil water replenishment,probably due to a pulse in soil C and n mineralization caused by the wetting of dry soil,but overestimated soil n_(min)after occasional rainy spells when soil quickly became saturated,probably due to occasional nitrous oxide emissions not being fully accounted for by the model and specific preferential water flow,which might lead to greater nitrate leaching than that simulated by LEACHM using the convection-dispersion *** results show that soil n_(min)measurements after fallow periods cannot be well predicted by *** findings of this study provide a support for fertilization planning for crop rotation systems including a fallow period to avoid overfertilization in the following cropping season and reduce n environmental impacts.

RAS and MYC rank amongst the most commonly altered oncogenes in cancer,with RAS being the most frequently mutated and MYC the most *** cooperative interplay between RAS and MYC constitutes a complex and multifaceted phenomenon,profoundly influencing tumor *** and individually,these two oncogenes regulate most,if not all,hallmarks of cancer,including cell death escape,replicative immortality,tumor-associated angiogenesis,cell invasion and metastasis,metabolic adaptation,and immune *** to their frequent alteration and role in tumorigenesis,MYC and RAS emerge as highly appealing targets in cancer ***,due to their complex nature,both oncogenes have been long considered“undruggable”and,until recently,no drugs directly targeting them had reached the *** review aims to shed light on their complex partnership,with special attention to their active collaboration in fostering an immunosuppressive milieu and driving immunotherapeutic resistance in *** this review,we also present an update on the different inhibitors targeting RAS and MYC currently undergoing clinical trials,along with their clinical outcomes and the different combination strategies being explored to overcome drug *** recent clinical development suggests a paradigm shift in the long-standing belief of RAS and MYC“undruggability”,hinting at a new era in their therapeutic targeting.

Biometric and ICL-related risk factors associated to sub-optimal vaults in eyes implanted with implantable collamer lenses

Background:To identify biometric and implantable collamer lens(ICL)-related risk factors associated with suboptimal postoperative vault in eyes implanted with phakic ***:This study reports a retrospective case series of the first operated eye in 360 patients implanted with myopic spherical or toric ***,white-to-white(WTW),central keratometry(Kc)and central corneal thickness(CCT)were measured using the ***-segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT,Visante)was applied preoperatively for measuring the horizontal anterior-chamber angle-to-angle distance(ATA),internal anterior chamber depth(ACD),crystalline lens rise(CLR),anterior-chamber angle(ACA)and postoperatively the *** were divided into three vault groups:low(LVG:≤250μm),optimal(OVG:>250 andnd high(HVG:≥1000μm).Multinomial logistic regression(MLR)was used to find the sub-optimal vault ***:MLR showed that CLR,ICL size minus the ATA(ICL size-ATA),age,ICL spherical equivalent(ICLSE)and ICL size as contributing factors for sub-optimal vaults(pseudo-R2=0.40).Increased CLR(OR:1.01,CI:1.00-1.01)and less myopic ICLSE(OR:1.22,CI:1.07-1.40)were risk factors for low *** ICL size-ATA(OR:41.29,CI:10.57-161.22)and the 13.7mm ICL(OR:7.08,CI:3.16-15.89)were risk factors for high vaults,whereas less myopic ICLSE(OR:0.85,CI:0.76-0.95)and older age(OR:0.92,CI:0.88-0.98)were protective ***:High CLR and low ICLSE were the major risk factors in eyes presenting low *** the opposite direction,ICL size-ATA was the major contributor for high *** relationship was more critical in higher myopic ICLSE,younger eyes and when 13.7mm ICL were *** findings show that factors influencing the vault have differentiated weight of influence depending on the type of vault(low,optimal or high).

Depth of closure:new calculation method based on sediment data

Obtaining depth of closure(DoC) in an accurate manner is a fundamental issue for coastal engineering,since good results for coastal structures and beach nourishment depend mainly on DoC. Currently, there are two methods for obtaining the DoC, mathematical formulations and profile surveys. However, these methods can incur important errors if one does not take into account the characteristics and morphology of the area, or if one does not have a sufficiently long time series. In this work the DoC is obtained from the break in the trend of the sediment with the depth, that is, in general with the increase of the depth a decrease in the size of the sediment takes place. However, at one point this tendency changes and the size increases, and then decreases again. When comparing the point where the minimum sediment size occurs before the increase, it is observed that the error incurred is small compared to other methods. If the Standard Deviation of Depth Change(SDDC) method is considered as the most accurate method, the error incurred by the proposed method is less than 7%. In addition, it can be seen that the dispersion of the sediment method always occurs outside the zone of bar movement. Whereas in the methods of profiles survey(using 2 cm precision profiles), sometimes the DoC is obtained within the active zone of bar movement. In addition, where the relative minimum of the median sediment size is found, and the sizes of 0.063 and 0.125 mm predominate in the composition of the sample. Therefore, this new method allows the precise location of the DoC to be obtained in a fast and simple way. Furthermore, this method has the advantage that it is not affected by the modifications that may be experienced by both the study area and the cross-shore beach profile.

We report the application of a solid lanthanum-ceria-zinc catalyst in the catalytic regeneration of diesel particulate filters （DPF） in diesel engines. We synthesized a CeO2- ZnO-La2O3 （Ce-Zn-La） mixed oxide by a lactic acid-mediated sol-gel method, which efficiently coated cordierite substrates for soot capture and combustion. We studied the effects of La loading on the physicochemical and catalytic properties of Ce-Zn mixed oxide during lowtemperature soot combustion processes. We characterized the synthesized catalysts by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, n2 adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, oxygen storage capacity （OSG）, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy （SEM and TEM）. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis （TGA/DTA） confirmed that the catalysts effectively reduced the soot oxidation temperature. The ternary Ce-Zn-La mixed oxide catalyst with Ce/Zn/La atomic ratio of 2：1：0.5 had the highest catalytic activity and promoted soot oxidation at temperatures below 390℃. This indicated that the large number of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst structure generated oxygen species at low temperatures. Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed the presence of oxygen vacancies and lattice defects in Ce-Zn-La samples, which were key parameters concerning the stability and redox properties of the prepared catalysts.

Sphincter lesions observed on ultrasound after transanal endoscopic surgery

AIM: To assess the morphological impact of transanal endoscopic surgery on the sphincter apparatus using the modified Starck classification. METHODS: A prospective,observational study of 118 consecutive patients undergoing Transanal Endoscopic Operation/Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery(TEO/TEM) from March 2013 to May 2014 was performed. All the patients underwent an endoanal ultrasound prior to surgery and one and four months postoperatively in order to measure sphincter width,identify sphincter defects and to quantify them in terms of the level,depth and size of the affected anal canal. To assess the lesions,we used the "modified" Starck classifi-cation,which incorporates the variable "sphincter fragmentation". The results were correlated with the Wexner incontinence ***: Of the 118 patients,twelve(sphincter lesions) were excluded. The results of the 106 patients were as follows after one month: 31(29.2%) lesions found on ultrasound after one month,median overall Starck score of 4(range 3-6); 10(9.4%) defects in the internal anal sphincter(IAS) and 3(2.8%) in the external anal sphincter(EAS); 17 patients(16%) had fragmentation of the sphincter apparatus with both sphincters affected in one case. At four months: 7(6.6%) defects,all in the IAS,overall median Starck score of 4(range 3-6). Mean IAS widths were 3.5 mm(SD 1.14) preoperatively,4.38 mm(SD 2.1) one month postoperatively and 4.03 mm(SD 1.46) four months postoperatively. The only statistically significant difference in sphincter width in the IAS measurements was between preoperatively and one month postoperatively. no incontinence was reported,even in cases of ultrasound ***: TEO/TEM may produce ultrasounda b n o r m a l i t i e s b u t t h i s i s n o t a c c o m p a n i e d b y clinical changes in continence. The modified Starck classification is useful for describing and managing these disorders.

Industry decarbonization requires the development of highly efficient and flexible technologies relying on renewable energy resources,especially biomass and solar/wind *** the case of pure oxygen production,oxygen transport membranes(OTMs)appear as an alternative technology for the cryogenic distillation of air,the industrially-established process of producing ***,OTMs could provide oxygen from different sources(air,water,CO_(2),etc.),and they are more flexible in adapting to current processes,producing oxygen at 700^(-1)000℃.Furthermore,OTMs can be integrated into catalytic membrane reactors,providing new pathways for different *** first part of this study was focused on electrification on a traditional OTM material(Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)),imposing different electric currents/voltages along a capillary *** to the emerging Joule effect,the membrane-surface temperature and the associated O_(2) permeation flux could be ***,the OTM is electrically and locally heated and reaches 900℃on the surface,whereas the surrounding of the membrane was maintained at 650℃.The O_(2)permeation flux reached for the electrified membranes was~3.7 nmL min^(-1)cm^(-2),corresponding to the flux obtained with an OTM non-electrified at 900℃.The influence of depositing a porous Ce_(0.8)Tb_(0.2)O_(2-δ) catalytic/protective layer on the outer membrane surface revealed that lower surface temperatures(830℃)were detected at the same imposed electric ***,the electrification concept was demonstrated in a catalytic membrane reactor(CMR)where the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane(ODHE)was carried *** reaction is very sensitive to temperature,and here,we demonstrate an improvement of the ethylene yield by reaching moderate temperatures in the reaction chamber while the O_(2) injection into the reaction can be easily fine-tuned.
