Phytomedicines as potential inhibitors of β amyloid aggregation: significance to Alzheimer's disease

Throughout the history of drug development, plants have been an important source for the discovery of novel therapeutically active compounds for many diseases. The ethnopharmacological approach has provided several leads to identify potential new drugs from plant sources, including those for memory disorders. For the treatment of Alzheimer's disease the drug discovery focus shifted from cholinesterase inhibitors, to other targets primarily based on two key neuropathological hallmarks, namely the hyperphosphorylation of the tau protein resulting in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles(nFTs), and the increased formation and aggregation of amyloid-beta peptide(Aβ) derived from amyloid precursor protein(APP). The present article aims to provide a comprehensive literature survey of plants and their constituents that have been tested for Aβ aggregation, thus possibly relieving several features of Alzheimer's disease(AD).

A novel translabial platform utilizing bioexcipients from Litchi chinesis for the delivery of rosiglitazone maleate

The aim of this study was to formulate drug-loaded bio-lipstrips using novel bioexcipients isolated from the fruit pulp of Litchi chinesis(biomaterial L)and to explore the potentiality of lip skin as a novel translabial drug delivery *** biomaterial,prepared by a simplified economical process and purified by hot dialysis,was subjected to various physicochemical evaluations along with spectral analysis including UV,FT-IR,Mass and ^(1)H *** lipstrip formulated with the novel bioexcipients was screened for its functional properties,including filmability using a film-casting method,and bio/mucoadhesitivity using a shear-stress method,the Park and Robinson method and a rotating cylinder ***-loaded bio-lipstrips were formulated by using biomaterial L as a strip former and dextrose as a *** formulated strips were subjected to various evaluations,including thickness,folding endurance,in-vitro release and in-vivo *** release of rosiglitazone maleate was maintained over 24 h,which was confirmed in in-vitro and in-vivo release *** results reveal that this biopolymer possesses promising stripability as well as *** formulated bio-lipstrips are feasible for delivering rosiglitazone maleate by translabial administration.

Biodiversity and seasonal variation of benthic macrofauna in Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep,India

From the Indian coast only limited data are available on the benthic fauna of the seagrass communities. In this study, seasonal variation in the distribution of macrobenthos and influence of environmental parameters was explored at four seagrass beds and two mangrove stations along the Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep, India, from September 1999 to August 2001. A total of 160 macrobenthic species from eight major groups represented the macrofauna of the Minicoy Island. Of the identified taxa, molluscs 70（gastropods 41.46%, bivalves 7.5%）, polychaetes 27（16.88%）, crustaceans 30（18.75%）, echinoderms 11（6.88%） and remaining others. Average seasonal abundance of benthic macrofauna ranged from 219 to 711 ind./m2, species diversity varied from 1.45 to 3.64 bits per individual, species richness index ranged from 4.01 to 26.17, evenness 0.69 to 1.66. In general, the higher abundance and species diversity was noticed in southern seagrass stations and northern seagrass stations, but in the mangrove stations comparatively low species diversity was observed. Three-way analysis of variance indicated that all communities resulted as being significantly different between seagrass and mangrove station, mainly when the seasonal interaction was considered. Multivariate analyses were employed to help define benthic characteristic and the relationship between environmental parameters at the six monitoring stations. Results of cluster analyses and multidimensional scale plot suggest that for mangrove region, different physiographic provinces, lower salinity, dissolved oxygen and sediment biotic structure have a higher influence on the species composition and diversity than other oceanographic conditions.

Preparation and evaluation of mucoadhesive bio-flexy films from Cocos nucifera biopolymer using Tiagabine moiety

nucleotide Sequencing and Phylogenetic Analysis Using PCR Amplicons of U3 Gene of Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus (JSRV) Detected in natural Cases of Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma in India

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) caused by an exogenous Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is prevalent in Indian sheep. In the present study, OPA was diagnosed in sheep by clinical signs, gross and histopathology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Proviral DnA of exogenous JSRV was detected in lung tumor tissues, mediastinal lymph nodes, blood and lung fluid samples from natural cases of OPA by using U3-hn PCR and the PCR amplicons were sequenced to analyze nucleotide divergence. In total, six isolates were sequenced that had 96% - 100% homology with a UK strain (AF105220.1) but more divergent from a South African strain (M80216) with 88% - 93% identity. The phylogenetic analysis revealed segregation of the six isolates into two clusters. In conclusion, this study is the first report on sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of JSRV in India and further studies are suggested to know the complete sequencing and genetic divergence of JSRV in Indian sheep.

Correlative Study between UV Irradiance and TOC Using AURA OMI at Kannur (12.3n, 75.4E)

The solar UV radiation has prominent impacts on human life, animals and plants with positive and negative effects. Atmospheric ozone, which is formed from the photodissociation of molecular oxygen mainly in the stratosphere, absorbs a significant factor of solar UV radiation. The ozone in the stratosphere acts as a protective layer to prevent UV radiation reaching on the surface of the earth. Hence the intensity of solar UV radiation on the surface has a strong dependence on the Total Ozone Column (TOC). The UV irradiance on earth surface depends on geometrical factors such as solar zenith angle, altitude, latitude and other atmospheric parameters as well. This is an attempt to study the variation of solar UV flux at its four discrete wavelengths ranging from 305 - 380 nm at Kannur, which is located in the north of Kerala in India. Hence such a correlation of TOC and UV irradiance is relevant to realize the radiation budget at this location (12.3n, 75.4E) using AURA OMI data. This paper reveals the correlation of day to day, month to month temporal variation of total ozone column (in DU) and UV irradiance (w/m2). From the analysis, the anti-correlation between UV and TOC is revealed and its impact in the solar radiation budget is established.
