In this paper, a practical analysis of stability by simulation for the effect of incorporating a Kalman estimator in the control loop of the inverted pendulum with a neurocontroller is presented. The neurocontroller is calculated by approximate optimal control, without considering the Kalman estimator in the loop following the Theorem of the separation. The results are compared with a time-varying linear controller, which in noiseless conditions in the state or in the measurement has an acceptable performance, but when it is under noise conditions its operation closes into a state space range more limited than the one proposed here.

Objective: This article is a critical review of the literature concerning thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma and is particularly focused on the management and prognosis of this rare entity. Study Design: A review of all the cases of thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma reported in the literature up to January 2013. Methods: The search was carried out through the introduction of the MeSH terms: Chondrosarcoma, Laryngeal Cartilages, Thyroid Cartilage, Therapeutics. All the studies related to thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma were selected together with a newly presented case. Results: A total of 47 cases have been described in the literature, and 35 of these include sufficient data for statistical analysis. The age of patients ranged from 40 to 77 years, with a male predilection (88.6%). The main symptoms were neck mass and hoarseness. Grade I and II tumors were most frequent. A total of 13 cases described an extension of the tumor beyond the thyroid cartilage. The most common treatment was partial laryngectomy (50%). All patients who died were male, with grade II or II-III tumor or associated sarcoma, had metastases and received radiotherapy in addition to total laryngectomy. Conclusion: Patient age and tumor size does not influence the prognosis. Tumor grade I and I-II have good prognoses, whereas the prognosis is unpredictable in tumors between grade II and III. Patients with associated sarcoma, or metastasis, have a worse prognosis. Partial laryngectomy is a good therapeutic option, although total laryngectomy is sometimes required in order to ensure complete resection.

Africa is the cradle of all human beings, and although it has been the focus of a number of genetic studies, there are many questions that remain unresolved. We have performed one of the largest and most comprehensive meta-analyses of mitochondrial DnA （mtDnA） lineages carried out in the African continent to date. We generated high-throughput mtDnA single nucleotide polymorphism （SnP） data （230 SnPs） from 2024 Africans, where more than 500 of them were additionally genotyped for the control region. These data were analyzed together with over 12,700 control region profiles collected from the literature, representing more than 300 population samples from Africa. Insights into the African homeland of humans are discussed. Phylogeographic patterns for the African continent are shown at a high phylogeographic resolution as well as at the population and regional levels. The deepest branch of the mtDnA tree, haplogroup L0, shows the highest sub-haplogroup diversity in Southeast and East Africa, suggesting this region as the homeland for modem humans. Several demographic estimates point to the coast as a facilitator of human migration in Africa, but the data indicate complex patterns, perhaps mirroring the effect of recent continental-scaled demographic events in re-shaping African mtDnA variability.

The variability of the levels of atmospheric particulate matter PM10 and its composition is assessed in the rural and urban zones of Mexicali during fall and winter 2008-2009, using a low level volume Minivol sampler, with quartz and Teflon filters. During fall the Mexican norm was exceeded (120 μg/m3 in 24 hr) in only two occasions, while in winter it was exceeded twelve times. The predominant component in fall was geological material with 62.5% for the rural zone and 48.5% for the urban one. In winter the geological material was also predominant with 65% for the rural zone and 54.4% for the urban zone. The aim of this work is the interpretation of the variability of the atmospheric PM10 particulate matter at two selected zones (urban and rural of Mexicali) during fall and winter, with emphasis on the chemical composition. The results suggest that the pollution in the urban and rural zones has common sources during winter whereas in fall the pollution has different sources.

Context-dependent insect predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite

Context dependence arises when ecological relationships vary with the conditions under which they are observed. Context dependence of interactions involving parasites is poorly known, even if it is key to understanding host–parasite relationships and food web dynamics. This paper investigates to which extent predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite (Carnus hemapterus) is context-dependent. Based on a predator-exclusion experiment, predation pressure on C. hemapterus pupae in the host's nest for 3 years, and its variation between habitat types are quantified. Variation in precipitation and normalized difference vegetation index (nDVI) is also explored as a likely cause of context dependency. We hypothesize that predation pressure should fluctuate with such surrogates of food availability, so that inter-annual and intra-annual differences may emerge. The number of nests with significant reduction of pupae varied widely among years ranging from 24% to 75%. However, average pupae reduction in nests where a significant reduction occurred did not vary between years. no differences in predation rates between habitat types were detected. Precipitation and nDVI varied widely between years and nDVI was consistently lower around nests on cliffs than around nests on trees and farmhouses. Parallels were found between variation in predation pressure and precipitation/nDVI at a wide scale (highest predation the driest year, and much lower the 2 rainier ones), but not at the nest scale. This paper shows clear context-dependent insect predation pressure on an ectoparasite under natural conditions, and that such interaction changes in signs rather than magnitude between years. The causes for these variations require longer-term studies and/or well-designed, large-scale experiments.

This paper is a report of a 34-year-old man with chronic renal failure undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis which developed peritonitis due to Geotricum candidum. The diagnosis was established by culture of dialysis fluid. The purpose of this report is to provide data on a fungal peritonitis due to a non-common agent.

Exposure to disinfection by-products（DBP） such as trihalomethanes（THM） in swimming pools has been linked to adverse health effects in humans, but their biological mechanisms are unclear. We evaluated short-term changes in blood gene expression of adult recreational swimmers after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Volunteers swam 40 min in an indoor chlorinated pool. Blood samples were drawn and four THM（chloroform,bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform） were measured in exhaled breath before and after swimming. Intensity of physical activity was measured as metabolic equivalents（METs）. Gene expression in whole blood m RnA was evaluated using Illumina Human HT-12v3 Expression-Bead Chip. Linear mixed models were used to evaluate the relationship between gene expression changes and THM exposure. Thirty-seven before-after pairs were analyzed. The median increase from baseline to after swimming were： 0.7 to 2.3 for MET, and 1.4 to 7.1 μg/m^3 for exhaled total THM（sum of the four THM）.Exhaled THM increased on average 0.94 μg/m^3 per 1 MET. While 1643 probes were differentially expressed post-exposure. Of them, 189 were also associated with exhaled levels of individual/total THM or MET after False Discovery Rate. The observed associations with the exhaled THM were low to moderate（Log-fold change range：-0.17 to 0.15）. In conclusion, we identified short-term gene expression changes associated with swimming in a pool that were minor in magnitude and their biological meaning was unspecific. The high collinearity between exhaled THM levels and intensity of physical activity precluded mutually adjusted models with both covariates. These exploratory results should be validated in future studies.

The ways for improving on techniques for finding new solvable potentials based on supersymmetry and shape invariance has been discussed by Morales et al. [1] In doing so they address the peculiar system known as the one-dimensional hydrogen atom. In this paper we show that their remarks on such problem are mistaken. We do this by explicitly constructing both the one-dimensional Coulomb potential and the superpotential associated with the problem, objects whose existence are denied in the mentioned paper.
