Background It is necessary to determine the implications for managing forest stands using variable retention harvesting for maintaining carbon and for calculating the effects of different harvesting practices on above-and below-ground carbon balance in forest *** this context,forest carbon management has gained more attention among managers and policy-makers during recent *** aim of this study was to determine carbon pool dynamics in different forest ecosystem components after variable retention harvesting(VrH)to characterize the ecological stability and quantify the recovery rate through the years-after-harvesting(YAH).Methods Carbon pool compartmentalization of 14 different components was determined in 60 harvested and primary unmanaged forests during the first 18 YAH in Tierra del Fuego(Argentina).We compared them using uni-and multi-variate methods,relativizing the outputs with primary unmanaged *** We determined the effectiveness to retain carbon components in post-harvested stands under different retention strategies(aggregated ***).The balance among carbon pool components changed between managed and unmanaged stands across the YAH,and was directly related to the impact *** retention improved the ecological stability of the harvested areas,where the below-ground components were more stable than the above-ground *** recovery rate was directly related to the post-harvesting natural dynamics of the *** studied period was not enough to fully recover the C levels of primary unmanaged for-ests,but VrH showed advantages to increase the C pools in the managed *** Promoting VrH can improve sustainable forestry at the landscape level and in the long term,generating positive synergies with biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem *** study provides important new insights into forest carbon management,in particular to setting standards in carbon projects and sets the ground

Surface channel waveguides(WGs) were fabricated in a monoclinic Tm^(3+):KLu(WO_4)_2 crystal by femtosecond direct laser writing(fs-DLW). The WGs consisted of a half-ring cladding with diameters of 50 and 60 μm located just beneath the crystal surface. They were characterized by confocal laser microscopy and μ-raman spectroscopy,indicating a reduced crystallinity and stress-induced birefringence of the WG cladding. In continuous-wave(CW)mode, under Ti:sapphire laser pumping at 802 nm, the maximum output power reached 171.1 mW at 1847.4 nm,corresponding to a slope efficiency η of 37.8% for the 60 μm diameter WG. The WG propagation loss was0.7 0.3 d B∕cm. The top surface of the WGs was spin-coated by a polymethyl methacrylate film containing randomly oriented(spaghetti-like) arc-discharge single-walled carbon nanotubes serving as a saturable absorber based on evanescent field coupling. Stable passively Q-switched(PQS) operation was achieved. The PQS60 μm diameter WG laser generated a record output power of 150 m W at 1846.8 nm with η = 34.6%. The conversion efficiency with respect to the CW mode was 87.6%. The best pulse characteristics(energy/duration)were 105.6 nJ/98 ns at a repetition rate of 1.42 MHz.

AIM： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a dexamethasone（DEX） intravitreal implant for diabetic macular edema（DME）.METHODS： Totally 113 eyes of 84 patients were divided in three subgroups： naive patients（n=11）, pseudophakic patients（n=72） and phakic patients（n=30）. Inclusive criterion comprised adult diabetic patients with central fovea thickening and impaired visual acuity resulting from DME for whom previous standard treatments showed no improvement in both central macular thickness（CMT） and best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） after at least 3 mo of treatment. Outcome data were obtained from patient visits at baseline and at months 1, 3, 5, 9 and 12 after the first DEX implant injection. At each of these visits, patients underwent measurement of BCVA, a complete eye examination and measurement of CMT and macular volume（MV） carried out with optical coherence tomography（OCT） images. rESULTS： Seventy-three eyes（64.5%） received a single implant, 30（26.5%） received two implants and 10（9%） received three implants. At baseline, average in BCVA, CMT and MV were 43.5±20.8, 462.8±145 and 12.6±2.5 respectively. These values improved significantly at 1 mo（BCVA： 47.2±19.5, CMT： 339.6±120, MV： 11.11±1.4） and 3 mo（BCVA： 53.2±18.1, CMT： 353.8±141, MV： 11.3±1.3）（P≤0.05）. At 5 mo（BCVA： 50.9±19.8, CMT： 425±150, MV： 12.27±2.3）, 9 mo（BCVA： 48.4±17.6, CMT： 445.5±170, MV： 12.5±2.3） and 12 mo（BCVA： 47.7±18.8, CMT： 413.2±149, MV： 12.03±2.5）, improvements in the three parameters were no longer statistically significant and decreased progressively but did not reach baseline values. There were no clinical differences between subgroups. Ocular complications were ***： Patients with DEX implants show maximum efficacy at 3 mo which then declined progressively, but is still better than baseline values at the end of follow-up.

natural killer(nK)cell-mediated antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity(ADCC)through CD16 plays a critical role in antihuman immunodeficiency virus(HIV)responses.1–3 CD300a is a surface receptor highly expressed on nK cells that has the capacity to inhibit nK cell-mediated cytotoxicity in healthy donors.4 The CD300a molecule has been related to several viral infections and is able to diminish the nK cell killing of pseudorabies-infected cells through interactions with its ligands phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine.5 In addition,CD300a expression on B and CD4+T lymphocytes is altered during HIV-1 infection,and combined antiretroviral therapy(cArT)does not restore nonpathological expression levels.5,6 However,the expression and function of CD300a on nK cells during HIV-1 infection is still *** have determined the surface expression of CD300a on different nK cell subsets and the capacity of this receptor to inhibit CD16-induced nK cell effector functions in healthy and HIV-1 infected individuals.

Pecan[Carya illinoinensis(Wangenh.)***.]is a deciduous tree whose fruits(nuts)are of high economic value and offer excellent nutritional ***,soils high in sulphates can limit its growth and *** with 5-year-old trees of‘Western Schley’pecan grown in soils high in sulphates,the levels of proline and oxidative metabolism were recorded in the *** showed that different levels of visible leaflet damage(‘sufficiency’,‘low’,‘moderate’or‘severe’)were associated with different levels of leaflet sulphates(mg kg^(−1)):‘sufficiency’(≤40),‘low’(41–60),‘moderate’(61–80)and‘severe’(80–100).‘Severe’sulphate damage was associated with significant reductions in chlorophyll(TChl)(17.04μg g^(−1)),relative water content(rWC)(50%)and leaf area(LA),and with increases in the concentrations of total carotenoids(TC)and proline(Prl).Increases were also observed in the activities of the oxidative metabolism enzymes:superoxide dismutase(SOD)(1.82 units min^(−1) g^(−1)),catalase(CAT)(2.86μmol H_(2)O_(2) min^(−1) g^(−1))and antioxidant capacity(AC)(87%DPPH inhibition).However,guaiacol peroxidase(GP)showed a reduction(2.97 nmol GSH min^(−1) g^(−1)).An inverse relationship was found between the sulphate concentration in the leaflets with respect to the evaluated parameters of TChl,TC,rWC,LA,AC,and *** synthesis and antioxidant enzymatic activity indicate salt stress in pecan leaflets in orchards irrigated with deep-well water high in sulphates.
