Biochemical composition of the alligator pipefish, Syngnathoides biaculeatus (Bloch, 1785)

Considering the economic importance in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and lack of baseline information, we evaluated the proximate composition, fatty acid and amino acid profiles, trace element content and C:n ratio in the alligator pipefish, Syngnathoides biaculeatus. Amongst proximate principals, a crude protein formed the major biochemical component((58.9±2.2)% dry weight). Mean percent concentrations(dry weight) of other components such as a total lipid(TL), ash and nitrogen-free extract measured were,(1.8±0.2)%,(19.2±2.2)% and(20.1±0.45)%, respectively. The fatty acid profile revealed the presence of 27 saturated fatty acids(SFA) with 13 straight-chained and 14 branched-chained, 28 unsaturated fatty acids(UFA) with 14 monounsaturated and 14 polyunsaturated and nine other minor fatty acids. Mean percent contributions of total SFAs and UFAs to TL were found to be(55.41±0.24)% and(44.05±0.25)%, respectively. Altogether, 16 dif ferent amino acids with an equal number of essential(EAA) and non-essential(nAA) ones were identified. Percent contributions by EAA and nAA to the total amino acid content were 38.11% and 61.89%, respectively. Trace metal concentrations in S. biaculeatus were generally low and their distribution followed the order, Mg>Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>Cr>ni>Hg>Co. The C:n ratio was(4.37±0.04)%. The profile of major biochemical constituents in alligator pipefish, S. biaculeatus revealed its potential use in TCM as well as a nutritional diet for human consumption. The results of the study would also form the basis for formulation and optimization of diets for the culture of S. biaculeatus.

The conditional version of sandwiched Tsallis relative entropy (CSTRE) is employed to study the bipartite separability of one parameter family of n-qudit Werner-Popescu states in their 1:n-1 partition. For all n, the strongest limitation on bipartite separability is realized in the limit and is found to match exactly with the separability range obtained using an algebraic method which is both necessary and sufficient. The theoretical superiority of using CSTRE criterion to find the bipartite separability range over the one using Abe-Rajagopal (AR) q-conditional entropy is illustrated by comparing the convergence of the parameter x with respect to q, in the implicit plots of AR q-conditional entropy and CSTRE.

AIM To evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgical left atrial appendage occlusion(s-LAAO) during concomitant cardiac *** We performed a comprehensive literature search through May 31 st 2018 for all eligible studies comparing s-LAAO vs no occlusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Clinical outcomes during follow-up included: embolic events, stroke, all-cause mortality, atrial fibrillation(AF), reoperation for bleeding and postoperative complications. We further stratified the analysis based on propensity matched studies and AF *** Twelve studies(n = 40107) met the inclusion criteria.s-LAAO was associated with lower risk of embolic events(OR: 0.63, 95%CI: 0.53-0.76; P nd stroke(OR: 0.68, 95%CI: 0.57-0.82; P nalysis demonstrated this association was more prominent in the AF predominant strata. There was no significant difference in the incidence risk of allcause mortality, AF, and reoperation for bleeding and postoperative *** Concomitant s-LAAO during cardiac surgery was associated with lower risk of follow-up thromboembolic events and stroke, especially in those with AF without significant increase in adverse events. Further randomized trials to evaluate long-term benefits of s-LAAO are warranted.

Cancer stem cells in liver metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma express components of the renin-angiotensin system

Aim: We have recently identified a cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations within the tumor nests (Tns) and another within the peritumoral stroma (PTS) in liver metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma (LMCA). This study investigated the expression of components of the renin-angiotensin (RAS): pro-renin receptor (PRR), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), and angiotensin II receptor 1 (ATIIR1) and angiotensin II receptor 2 (ATIIR2) in LMCA. Methods: 3,3-Diaminobenzidine (DAB) immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on 16 LMCA samples for PRR, ACE, ATIIR1 and ATIIR2. Immunofluorescence (IF) IHC staining was performed to investigate co-expression of these components of the RAS with SOX2 or OCT4. nanoString analysis (n = 6) and Western blotting (WB,n = 3) were performed on snap-frozen LMCA samples to confirm mRnA and protein expression, respectively. Results: DAB IHC staining showed the expression of PRR, ACE, ATIIR1 and ATIIR2 within all LMCA samples. nanoString analysis and WB confirmed gene and protein expression of these components of the RAS. IF IHC staining demonstrated expression of PRR, ATIIR1 and ATIIR2 by the SOX2+ CSCs within the Tns and the OCT4+ CSCs within the PTS. ACE was expressed on the endothelium of the microvessels within the PTS. ;Conclusion: These finding suggests the CSCs within LMCA maybe a novel therapeutic target by manipulation of the RAS.
