Underpinning the soft nature of soak-n-eat rice - A physicochemical and molecular approach

Soak-n-eat rice, a natural treasure of Eastern India, is popular rice based ethnic food item of the tribal peoples of Assam. In the present study, 22 low amylose containing glutinous Bora rice lines were explored for their unique ‘ready-to-eat’ properties, where physicochemical and molecular approach was used to investigate the science behind softness and finally the establishment of trait linked marker associated with this unique soft trait. Very low amylose content, pinholes in kernel, low final viscosity and detection of unique functional groups, made physicochemical properties of soft rice very distinct from normal rice. Polymorphic trait linked markers;a good number of SnPs in trait linked loci and down regulation of those loci during grain filling revealed the unique molecular basis of softness. RM190 is associated with amylose content and softness, confirmed as a trait linked marker by showing heterozygous band in hybrid lines with desired trait. This study may be the first holistic approach on soft rice for its unique soak-n-eat properties and developed hybrid lines may be the source of future environment friendly food.

This is a continuation of short communication([1]). In [1] a verification of the implicitization equation for degree two rational Bezier curves is presented which does not require the use of resultants. This paper presents these verifications in the general cases, i.e., for degree n rational Bezier curves. Thus some interesting interplay between the structure of the n x n implicitization matrix and the de Casteljau algorithm is revealed.

High spin states of the odd proton nucleus 123I have been populated in the reaction 116Cd(14n, 5n2p) at a beam energy of 65MeV. Two previously known positive-parity ΔI = 2 sequences have been extended up to 31/2+ and 41/2+. In addition, a number of ΔI = 1 transitions linking the two ΔI = 2 sequences have been observed. It is suggested that both the ΔI = 2 sequences are built upon the oblate πg7/2[404]7/2+ nilsson configuration.

In the present paper, the electrochemical behavior of ergosterol has been investigated by in situ circular dichroism (CD) spectroelectrochemistry with long path-length thin layer cell. E-0 (1.02V), alpha n(alpha) (0.302) of the electroxidation process of ergosterol were obtained from the CD spectroelectrochemical data. The mechanism of the electroxidation process of ergosterol is suggested.

To evaluate outcome of acute management and risk of rebleeding in patients with massive hemorrhage due to hepatocellular adenoma (HCA). METHODSThis retrospective cohort study included all consecutive patients who presented to our hospital with massive hemorrhage (grade II or III) due to ruptured HCA and were admitted for observation and/or intervention between 1999-2016. The diagnosis of HCA was based on radiological findings from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or pathological findings from biopsy or resection of the HCA. Hemorrhage was diagnosed based on findings from computed tomography or MRI. Medical records were reviewed for demographic features, clinical presentation, tumor features, initial and subsequent management, short- and long-term complications and patient and lesion follow-up. RESULTSAll patients were female (n = 23). Treatment in the acute phase consisted of embolization (n = 9, 39.1%), conservative therapy (n = 13, 56.5%), and other intervention (n = 1, 4.3%). Median hemoglobin level decreased significantly more on days 0-3 in the intervention group than in the patients initially treated conservatively (0.9 mmol/L vs 2.4 mmol/L respectively, P = 0.006). In total, 4 patients suffered severe short-term complications, which included hypovolemic shock, acute liver failure and abscess formation. After a median follow-up of 36 mo, tumor regression in non-surgically treated patients occurred with a median reduction of 76 mm down to 25 mm. Four patients underwent secondary (elective) treatment (i.e., tumor resection) to address HCA size of > 5 cm and/or desire for future pregnancy. One case of rebleeding was documented (4.3%). none of the patients experienced long-term complication (mean follow-up time: 36 mo). COnCLUSIOnWith a 4.3% risk of rebleeding, secondary (elective) treatment of HCA after massive hemorrhage may only be considered in patients with persistent HCA > 5 cm.

Background:The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic expression of Toll-like receptor(TLR)2/4 on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and to explore the relationship between TLR2/4 expression and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in postoperative patients of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Methods:Peripheral blood samples of 27 adults (23 men and 4 women with American Society of Anesthesiologists classification III to IV) received OLT were collected at T1 (after induction of anaesthesia),T2 (25 min after the beginning of anhepatic phase),T3 (3 hrs after graft reperfusion) and T4 (24 hrs after graft reperfusion). The expression of TLR2/4 on PBMC from those samples was measured by flow cytometry and serum concentrations of tumour necrosis factor (TnF)-α,interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8 were measured by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). Twenty-seven patients were divided into SIRS group (n=12) and non-SIRS group (n=15) according to the diagnostic criteria of SIRS. Results:Compared to the non-SIRS group,the volumes of blood loss and transfused red blood cells were higher in the SIRS group,as well as the pre-anhepatic and anhepatic phase lasted longer. The expression of TLR2/4 on PBMC increased significantly at T3 and T4,and serum concentrations of TnF-α,IL-1β and IL-8 were also increased significantly in SIRS patients. There was a positive correlation between expression of TLR4 on PBMC and the serum concentrations of TnF-α,IL-8 in SIRS patients. But Statistical results showed that the expression level of TLR2/4 on PBMC and serum concentrations of TnF-α,IL-1β and IL-8 were no significantly different with those in non-SIRS patients. The increasing amplitude of TLR2/4 expression on PBMC in SIRS patients was greater than that in non-SIRS ***:Up-regulation of TLR2/4 expression on PBMC during perioperative period of liver transplantation may play an important role in the development of postoperative SIRS.

This paper develops a many-objective optimization model, which contains objectives representing the interests of the electricity and gas networks, as well as the distributed district heating and cooling units, to coordinate the benefits of all parties participated in the integrated energy system(IES). In order to solve the many-objective optimization model efficiently, an improved objective reduction(IOR) approach is proposed, aiming at acquiring the smallest set of objectives. The IOR approach utilizes the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to measure the relationship between objectives based on the Pareto-optimal front captured by the multi-objective group search optimizer with adaptive covariance and Lévy flights algorithm, and adopts various strategies to reduce the number of objectives gradually. Simulation studies are conducted on an IES consisting of a modified IEEE 30-bus electricity network and a 15-node gas network. The results show that the many-objective optimization problem is transformed into a bi-objective formulation by the IOR. Furthermore,our approach improves the overall quality of dispatch solutions and alleviates the decision making burden.
