Efficient Resource Allocation in Cloud IaaS: A Multi-Objective Strategy for Minimizing Workflow Makespan and Cloud Resource Costs

The ease of accessing a virtually unlimited pool of resources makes Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds an ideal platform for running data-intensive workflow applications comprising hundreds of computational tasks. However, executing scientific workflows in IaaS cloud environments poses significant challenges due to conflicting objectives, such as minimizing execution time (makespan) and reducing resource utilization costs. This study responds to the increasing need for efficient and adaptable optimization solutions in dynamic and complex environments, which are critical for meeting the evolving demands of modern users and applications. This study presents an innovative multi-objective approach for scheduling scientific workflows in IaaS cloud environments. The proposed algorithm, MOS-MWMC, aims to minimize total execution time (makespan) and resource utilization costs by leveraging key features of virtual machine instances, such as a high number of cores and fast local SSD storage. By integrating realistic simulations based on the WREnCH framework, the method effectively dimensions the cloud infrastructure and optimizes resource usage. Experimental results highlight the superiority of MOS-MWMC compared to benchmark algorithms HEFT and Max-Min. The Pareto fronts obtained for the CyberShake, Epigenomics, and Montage workflows demonstrate closer proximity to the optimal front, confirming the algorithm’s ability to balance conflicting objectives. This study contributes to optimizing scientific workflows in complex environments by providing solutions tailored to specific user needs while minimizing costs and execution times.

A novel OFDM Receiver with Optimum Second Order Polynomial nyquist Windowing

This paper proposes a new receive scheme and a class of time domain second order polynomial nyquist window functions, and applies them to Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing （ OFDM ） systems in order to reduce Inter-Carrier Interference （ICI） induced by frequency offset. This paper also analyzes the Signal to ICI plus noise Ratio （SInR） and Bit Error Rate （BER） performances of the receiver. Additionally, this paper proposes a method to select optimum window parameters to maximize the SInR of the receiver thus providing an adaptive receiving capability. Our results show that the proposed method enables the use of unity roll-off factor, provides better SInR and BER than conventional receive methods whose roll-off factors are generally less than one. The new second order polynomial window is shown to provide better performance than raised cosine and ＂better than ＂ nyquist window.

Preparation of Polyurea Elastomer with Flame Retardant, Insulation and Thermal Conductivity Properties

By using 6,6-((sulfonylbis(4,1-phenylene)bis(azanediyl))bis(thiophen-2-ylm-ethylene))bis6H-di-benzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide(DOPO-n)as phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardant,the polyurea(PUA)with flame retardant properties(PUA/DOPO-n)was *** addition,organically modified montmorillonite(OMMT)and magnesium hydroxide(MH)were used as co-effectors respectively,and the flame retardant PUA(PUA/DOPO-n/OMMT and PUA/DOPO-n/MH)were also *** properties,flame retardant properties,flame retardant mechanism and mechanical properties of PUA/DOPO-n,PUA/DOPO-n/OMMT and PUA/DOPO-n/MH were investigated by thermogravimetric(TG)analysis,limiting oxygen index(LOI),UL 94,cone calorimeter test,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and tensile *** results show that the LOI value of PUA/20%DOPO-n,PUA/18%DOPO-n/2%OMMT and PUA/15%DOPO-n/5%MH are 27.1%,27.7%,and 28.3%,respectively,and UL 94 V-0 rating is *** with PUA,the peak heat release rate(pk-HRR),total heat release(THR)and average effective heat combustion(av-EHC)of PUA/20%DOPO-n,PUA/18%DOPO-n/2%OMMT and PUA/15%DOPO-n/5%MH decrease *** results indicate that the residual chars of PUA/20%DOPO-n,PUA/18%DOPO-n/2%OMMT and PUA/15%DOPO-n/5%MH are completer and more *** complex of DOPO-n/OMMT and DOPO-n/MH have synergistic flame *** mechanical properties of PUA can be improved by the addition of DOPO-n,DOPO-n/OMMT and DOPO-n/MH,*** insulation performance test shows that the volume resistivity of PUA/20%DOPO-n is 6.25×10^(16)Ω.***,by using modified boron nitride(MBn)as heat dissipating material,the complex of PUA/MBn was prepared,and the thermal conductivity of PUA/MBn was *** thermal conductivity of PUA/8%MBn complex coating at room temperature is 0.166 W/(M·K),which is a 163%improvement over pure PUA.

The Maximum and Minimum Degree of the Random r-uniform r-partite Hypergraphs

In this paper we consider the random r-uniform r-partite hypergraph model H（n1, n2,…, nr; n, p） which consists of all the r-uniform r-partite hypergraphs with vertex partition {V1,V2,…, Vr} where ｜Vi｜ = ni = ni（n）（1 ≤ i ≤ r） are positive integer-valued functions on n with n1 ＋n2 ＋… ＋nr =n, and each r-subset con.aining exactly one element in Vi （1 ≤ i ≤ r） is chosen to be a hyperedge of Hp ∈H（n1,n2,…,nr;n,p） with probability p = p（n）, all choices being independent. Let △V1 = △V1 （H） and δv1 = δv1（H） be the maximum and minimum degree of vertices in V1 of H, respectively; Xd,V1 = Xd,V1 （H）, Yd,V1 = Yd,V1 （H）, Zd,V1 = Zd,V1 （H） and Zc,d,V1=Zc,d,V1 （H） be the number of vertices in V1 of H with degree d, at least d, at most d, and between c and d, respectively. In this paper we obtain that in the space H（n1, n2,…, nr; n,p）, Xd,V1, Yd,V1, Zd,V1, and Zc,d,V1all have asymptotically Poisson distributions. We also answer the following two questions. What is the range of p that there exists a function D（n） such that in the space H（n1, n2,…,nr; n, p）, lim n→＋∞ P（△v1 = D（n）） = 1？ What is the range of p such that a.e., Hp ∈ H（n1,n2,...,nr;n,p） has a unique vertex in V1 with degree Av1（Hp）？ Both answers are p = o（logn1/n）, where n = r ∏ i=2 ni. The corresponding problems on δv1（Hp） also are considered, and we obtained the answers are p ≤ （1＋o（1））（logn1/n） andp=o （log n1/n）, respectively.

The Impulsive Solution for a Semi-linear Singularly Perturbed Differential-difference Equation

The impulsive solution for a semi-linear singularly perturbed differential-difference equation is studied. Using the methods of boundary function and fractional steps, we construct the formula asymptotic expansion of the problem. At the same time, Based on sewing techniques, the existence of the smooth impulsive solution and the uniform validity of the asymptotic expansion are proved.

The Degree Distribution of the Random Multigraphs

In this paper, as a generalization of the binomial random graph model, we define the model of multigraphs as follows： let G（n; {pk}） be the probability space of all the labelled loopless multigraphs with vertex set V = {v1, v2, ..., vn }, in which the distribution of tvi,vj, the number of the edges between any two vertices vi and vj is P{tvi,vj =k}=Pk, k=0, 1,2,...and they are independent of each other. Denote by Xd = Xd（G）,Yd = Yd（G）, Zd = Zd（G） and Zcd = Zcd（G） the number of vertices of G with degree d, at least d, at most d and between c and d. In this paper, we discuss the distribution of Xd, Yd, Zd and Zcd in the probability space G（n; （Pk））.

On the Inertia Index of a Mixed Graph in Terms of the Matching number

A mixed graph G^(-) is obtained by orienting some edges of G, where G is the underlying graph of G^(-) . The positive inertia index, denoted by p~+( G), and the negative inertia index, denoted by n~-(G^(-) ), of a mixed graph G^(-) are the integers specifying the numbers of positive and negative eigenvalues of the Hermitian adjacent matrix of G^(-) , respectively. In this paper, the positive and negative inertia indices of the mixed unicyclic graphs are studied. Moreover, the upper and lower bounds of the positive and negative inertia indices of the mixed graphs are investigated, and the mixed graphs which attain the upper and lower bounds are characterized respectively.

Catalytic oxidation of gas-phase elemental mercury by nano-Fe_2 O_3

Heterogeneous oxidation of gas-phase Hg 0 by nano-Fe 2 O 3 was investigated on a fixed bed reactor, and the effects of oxygen concentration, bed temperature, water vapour concentration and particle size have been discussed. The results showed that Hg 0 could be oxidized by active oxygen atom on the surface of nano-Fe 2 O 3 as well as lattice oxygen in nano-Fe 2 O 3 . Among the factors that affect Hg 0 oxidation by nano-Fe 2 O 3 , bed temperature plays an important role. More than 40% of total mercury was oxidized at 300°C, however, the test temperature at 400°C could cause sintering of nano-catalyst, which led to a lower efficiency of Hg 0 oxidation. The increase of oxygen concentration could promote mercury oxidation and led to higher Hg 0 oxidation efficiency. no obvious mercury oxidation was detected in the pure n 2 atmosphere, which indicates that oxygen is required in the gas stream for mercury oxidation. The presence of water vapour showed different effects on mercury oxidation depending on its concentration. The lower content of water vapour could promote mercury oxidation, while the higher content of water vapour inhibits mercury oxidation.

Pollutant concentrations and pollution loads in stormwater runoff from different land uses in Chongqing

To investigate the distribution of pollutant concentrations and pollution loads in stormwater runoff in Chongqing,six typical land use types were selected and studied from August 2009 to September *** analysis on the distribution of pollutant concentrations in all water samples shows that pollutant concentrations fluctuate greatly in rainfall-runoff,and the concentrations of the same pollutant also vary greatly in different rainfall *** addition,it indicates that the event mean concentrations （EMCs） of total suspended solids （TSS） and chemical oxygen demand （COD） from urban traffic roads （UTR） are significantly higher than those from residential roads （RR）,commercial areas （CA）,concrete roofs （CR）,tile roofs （TRoof）,and campus catchment areas （CCA）;and the EMCs of total phosphorus （TP） and nH3-n from UTR and CA are 2.35-5 and 3 times of the class-III standard values specified in the Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water （GB 3838-2002）.The EMCs of Fe,Pb and Cd are also much higher than the class-III standard *** analysis of pollution load producing coefficients （PLPC） reveals that the main pollution source of TSS,COD and TP is *** analysis of correlations between rainfall factors and EMCs/PLPC indicates that rainfall duration is correlated with EMCs/PLPC of TSS for TRoof and TP for UTR,while rainfall intensity is correlated with EMCs/PLPC of TP for both CR and *** results of this study provide a reference for better management of non-point source pollution in urban regions.

Adsorption of Arsenic by Laterite, Sandstone and Shale in a Fixed-Bed Column

The removal of arsenic from water is essential for the protection of public health. To investigate the adsorption capabilities of laterite, sandstone, and shale for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions, column experiments were conducted. In this study, raw materials and heat-treated (calcined) materials were examined. The experiments assessed the influence of various parameters, including initial concentration, bed depth, and the effects of heat treatment. The findings revealed that the breakthrough curves were influenced by the initial concentration of arsenic, the depth of the bed, and the type of material used. For an initial arsenic concentration of 5 mg/L, columns con.aining 85 cm of calcined laterite, sandstone, and shale produced volumes of 7460 ml (1492 min), 3510 ml (702 min), and 4400 ml (880 min) of water with arsenic levels below 0.01 mg/L, respectively. These calcined materials demonstrate significant potential for the effective removal of arsenic from water.
