A study comparative of rearin. of the Pacific white shrimp （Litopen.eus van.amei） with the n.le tilapia （Oreochromis n.loticus） in.three earthen.pon.s （5,600 m^2） with the salin.ty ran.ed from 0.5-1.2 ppt an. three treatmen. pon.s with salin.ty of 2-4 ppt by addin. brin. water in.o the pon.s. Postlarvae 12 （PL12） of L. van.amei were stocked at den.ity of 9 PL/m^2 an. after on. week the n.le tilapia fin.erlin.s were stocked at den.ity of I fish/m^2. On.y pelleted feed were given.to the fish durin. the 196-day rearin. period. Shrimps were partially harvested by sieve n.t at day 80 an. 120, an. five days later PLI2 were stocked at the rate of 3 PL/m^2. After fin.l harvestin. at day 196, the production. body weight an. survival from the treatmen. group were sign.fican.ly higher （P 〈 0.05） than.those of the con.rol group. While the fish production.body weight an. survival rate from both groups were n.t sign.fican. differen.es （P 〉 0.051）. The ion.c con.en.ration.of six major ion. （CI, SO42, Ca^2＋, n.^＋, Mg^2＋ an. K^＋）, salin.ty an. hardn.ss in.the treatmen. pon.s were sign.fican.ly higher than.those of the con.rol pon.s （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, the ion.c profiles of the treatmen. pon.s were similar to seawater at the salin.ty of 2 ppt while on.y 1 ppt in.the con.rol pon.s. Results from the study in.icated that in.order to achieve good growth an. survival rate of L. van.amei, brin. water should be added in.o grow-out pon.s prior to stockin. an. durin. the rearin.： period to obtain.an. main.ain.the salin.ty n.t less than.2 ppt.
