Nose-to-brain delivery of macromolecules mediated by cell-penetrating peptides

Brain delivery of macromolecular therapeutics (e.g., proteins) remains an unsolved problem because of the formidable blood brain bather (BBB). Although a direct pathway of nose-to-brain transfer provides an answer to circumventing the BBB and has already been intensively investigated for brain delivery of small drugs, new challenges arise for intranasal delivery of proteins because of their larger size and hydrophilicity. h order to overcome the bathers and take advantage of available pathways (e.g., epithelial tight junctions, uptake by olfactory neurons, transport into brain tissues, and intra-brain diffusion), a low molecular weight protamine (LMWP) cell-penetrating peptide was utilized to facilitate nose-to-brain transport. Cell-penetrating peptides (CPP) have been widely used to mediate macromolecular delivery through many kinds of biobarriers. Our results show that conjugates of LMWP proteinsare able to effectively penetrate into the brain after intranasal administration. The CPP-based intranasal method highlights a promising solution for protein therapy of brain diseases. Analysis of the Sloshing Flows of a LNG Cargo Tank

The sloshing flows in a LNG cargo tank model （1/50 scale） of a ship are measured by an embedded pano- ramicPIV system. The measurement system consists of a Nd-Yag laser（120mJ, 15Hz）, two cameras（lk x lk） and a host computer. Four experimental cases were tested for the tank model, in which swaying motions are made by a 6 DOF-motion platform. The amplitudes of swaying are 9.76mm and 29.29mm, and the swaying frequencies are 0.633Hz and 0.828Hz. The measurement regions are the vertical plane 50ram away from the front wall of the tank where a pump tower is installed. It was verified that the flow patterns of the sloshing are similar to each other when the swaying amplitudes are similar.

Antioxidant capacity and phytochemical content of 16 sources of corn distillers dried grains with solubles(DDGS)

Corn distillers dried grains with solubles(DDGS) is a co-product of the fuel ethanol industry that is an excellent source of energy, digestible amino acids, and digestible phosphorus. However, the antioxidant capacity and phytochemical content of DDGS and how it is influenced by production parameters is unknown. Therefore, 16 DDGS samples obtained from different ethanol production plants in the *** characterized for antioxidant capacity, vitamin E, xanthophylls, and ferulic acid content and compared with corn. The antioxidant capacity of DDGS samples, measured using the 2,2-diphenyl-lpicrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay, varied almost 2 folds among samples, but in all cases was more than 3 times that of corn. All DDGS samples had a considerably greater concentration of tocopherols and tocotrienols(lipid-soluble antioxidants) than corn. However, the relative concentrations among the tocopherols and tocotrienols tended to be similar to corn. The xanthophyll lutein was present in all DDGS samples and in all cases exceeded the content in corn. Zeaxanthin was detected in most samples. The total ferulic acid content of the DDGS samples was almost 3-fold greater than corn, but, as in corn, almost all was present in a bound form. However, the concentration of unbound(free) ferulic acid was more than 3 times the concentration found in the corn sample. Thus, DDGS is a rich source of phytochemical compounds and may provide antioxidant and health benefits beyond its macronutrient composition. However, differences in processing can greatly influence the phytochemical content and quality of DDGS. In particular,thermal abuse due to excessive heat used in drying may lead to lipid oxidation products that may have deleterious effects when incorporated into feeds.

Free radical scavenger effect of rebamipide in sperm processing and cryopreservation

Aim: To study the effect of rebamipide added to semen samples and cryoprotectant on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Methods: Semen samples from 30 fertile and healthy volunteers were collected by masturbation after 2 days - 3 days of abstinence. After liquefaction, the specimens were diluted with sperm wash media to a uniform density of 20×106/mL. Rebamipide was added to semen samples and cryoprotectant to a final concentration of 10 μmol/L, 30 μmol/L, 100 μmol/L or 300 μmol/L. Specimens were incubated at 37 ℃ in a 0.5 % CO2 incubator for 1 h or cryopreserved at -196 ℃ LN2 for 3 days. The sperm motility and viability and the levels of ROS and lipid peroxidation of sperm membrance were assessed before and after incubation and cryopreservation by means of computer assisted semen analyzer, eosin-nigrosin stain, chemiluminescence and thiobarbituric acid assay, respectively. Results: The sperm motility was significantly increased after incubation with 100 μmol/L and 300 μmol/L rebamipide (P0.05). The levels of ROS and lipid peroxidation in semen were significantly decreased in proportion to the concentrations of rebamipide both after incubation and cryopreservation (P<0.05). Conclusion: Rebamipide is an effective free radical scavenger in semen in vitro.

Enhanced biometric encryption algorithm for private key protection in BioPKI system

Protection of private key is the most critical part in public key infrastructure(PKI) system since it depends on the confidentiality of private key. Thread of password detection has been known as the vulnerability in this PKI system. Recently, studies have been conducted on Bio PKI system that uses the biometric information of users in order to replace the password type of private key protection in PKI system. However, Bio PKI system also has vulnerability in that biometric information used for protection of private key cannot be reused once it is stolen or lost. So, we propose the method to protect the private key using FIDSEQi which binds sequence to biometric information. The proposed method enhances reusability of biometric information and presents higher attack complexity than the method of authentication by cross matching single biometric information.

CT scan is regarded as the imaging modality of choice in patients with pancreaticobiliary ductal abnormalities. However, the axial orientation of the CT images provides only limited anatomical view of pancreaticobiliary ductal abnormalities. The technological advances of multi-de-tector row CT and three-dimensional image processing in workstations allows rapid image acquisition and a short postprocessing time. In particular, multiplanar reforma-tions (MPR) and minimum intensity projections (MinIP) offer rapid and accurate images of the anatomy and ab-normalities of the pancreaticobiliary tree. Moreover, MPR and MinIP help determine the relationship between the pancreaticobiliary ductal anatomy and the surrounding structures. This pictorial review illustrates the wide spec-trum of images obtained by the MPR and MinIP of the anomalies and disorders of the pancreaticobiliary tree.

Corrosion performance of high pressure die-cast Al-6Si-3Ni and Al-6Si-3Ni-2Cu alloys in aqueous NaCl solution

The corrosion performance of high pressure die-cast Al？6Si？3Ni （SN63） and Al-6Si-3Ni-2Cu （SNC632） alloys in 3.5%（mass fraction） NaCl solution was investigated. X-ray diffraction （XRD） and microstructural studies revealed the presence of singlephase Si and binary Al3Ni/Al3Ni2 phases along the grain boundary. Besides, the single Cu phase was also identified at the grainboundaries of the SNC632 alloy. Electrochemical corrosion results revealed that, the SNC632 alloy exhibited nobler shift incorrosion potential （φcorr）, lower corrosion current density （Jcorr） and higher corrosion resistance compared to the SN63 *** circuit curve fitting analysis of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS） results revealed the existence of twointerfaces between the electrolyte and substrate. The surface layer and charge transfer resistance （Rct） of the SNC632 alloy was higherthan that of the SN63 alloy. Immersion corrosion test results also confirmed the lower corrosion rate of the SNC632 alloy andsubstantiated the electrochemical corrosion results. Cu addition improved the corrosion resistance, which was mainly attributed to theabsence of secondary Cu containing intermetallic phases in the SNC632 alloy and Cu presented as single phase.

This review highlights the recent advancements in Mg research in South Korea with a prime focus on high-speed-extrudable Mg–Bi-based alloys for high productivity and strength,innovative techniques utilizing{10–12}twinning for improved mechanical properties,and alloying and processing methods for enhanced corrosion ***-alloyed Mg–Bi-based alloys possess thermally stableα-Mg matrix and secondary phase,which ensures high-speed extrusion of these alloys at elevated temperatures without hot ***,they exhibit outstanding extrudability with a maximum extrusion speed of up to 70 m/***,their high alloying contents offer excellent strength even after high-speed extrusion through strong solid solution hardening and particle hardening effects,making them suitable for high-performance extruded Mg *** pre-twinning process utilizing{10–12}twinning and the combined process of pre-twinning and subsequent annealing have shown promise in controlling microstructure and texture of wrought Mg alloys and thus enhancing their mechanical *** pre-twinning process enhances tensile strength,fatigue properties,and age-hardening rate of Mg ***,the combined processes of pre-twinning and subsequent annealing considerably improve their ductility,stretch formability,bending formability,and damping *** have been made to improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys through alloying additions,process treatments,and surface *** elements like Ca,Sc,and Sm alter the microstructural features(such as secondary phases and grain size)that affect the corrosion *** treatments such as multidirectional forging,screw rolling,and pulse electron beam can also improve the corrosion resistance by refining the ***,advanced surface coating technologies can create durable and corrosion-resistant layers for effectively protecting the Mg *** these research activities conducted
