Proteomic changes in mammalian spermatozoa during epididymal maturation

Epididymal maturation is associated with the activation of a cAMP-induced tyrosine phosphorylation cascade, which is ultimately associated with the expression of capacitation-dependent sperm functions, such as hyperactivated movement and acrosomal exocytosis. As spermatozoa progress through the epididymis they first acquire the capacity to phosphorylate tyrosine on targets on the principal piece, followed by the midpiece. By the time these cells have reached the cauda epididymidis they can phosphorylate the entire tail from neck to endpiece. This particular pattern of phosphorylation is associated with the ontogeny of fully functional spermatozoa that are capable of fertilizing the oocyte. Proteomic analyses indicate that this change is associated with the phosphorylation of several mitochondrial proteins, creation of a mitochondrial membrane potential and activation of mitochondrial free radical generation. At least in rodent species, activation of sperm mitochondria appears to be a particularly important part of epididymal maturation. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 554-564）

A doubly clamped microbeam actuated by electrostatic force with squeezed gas film damping is a well-known and stan-dard micro-device in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) for many researchers to demonstrate how reduced-order dynamic macromod-el is an effective way to faithfully capture the device behaviors. However it still takes time to directly recompute the time-dependant nonlin-ear terms in macromodels which are generated by a proper orthogonal decornposition (POD) method with Galerkin procedure at every timestep during the macromodel simulation. This paper proposes two methods for speeding up the computation of macromodel simulations. Inthe first method, the computation speedup is achieved based on the concept of precomputation upon the basis functions are available. In thesecond method, cubic splines approximation is used to interpolate the basis functions and their first and second derivatives, and spatial inte-gration is performed by application of the Gaussian quadrature. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is one of the most destructive sucking pests of vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops in China. Spinosad is one of the most commonly used insecticides to manage thrips. To assess the incidence of spinosad resistance in F. occidentalis field populations in eastern China, survival rates for 24 different populations were compared with those of a susceptible laboratory strain. All populations showed significantly higher resistance to spinosad compared with the control as determined by comparing median lethal concentrations. Two populations from Shouguang and Liaocheng in Shandong Province were classified as having moderate and high levels of resistance to spinosad with a mean resistance ratio of 17.0 and 89.2, respectively. Our research indicates a widespread reduction in spinosad efficacy for controlling F. occidentalis field populations, and that resistance management strategies should be implemented as soon as practicable, to reduce the potential of progressive resistance development and loss of efficacy.

We compare two contrasting X-class flares in terms of magnetic free energy, relative magnetic helicity and decay index of the active regions （ARs） in which they occurred. The events in question are the eruptive X2.2 flare from AR 11158 accompanied by a halo coronal mass ejection （CME） and the confined X3.1 flare from AR 12192 with no associated CME. These two flares exhibit similar behavior of free magnetic energy and helicity buildup for a few days preceding them. A major difference between the two flares is found to lie in the time-dependent change of magnetic helicity of the ARs that hosted them. AR 11158 shows a significant decrease in magnetic helicity starting -4 hours prior to the flare, but no apparent decrease in helicity is observed in AR 12192. By examining the magnetic helicity injection rates in terms of sign, we confirmed that the drastic decrease in magnetic helicity before the eruptive X2.2 flare was not caused by the injection of reversed helicity through the photosphere but rather the CME-related change in the coronal magnetic field. Another major difference we find is that AR 11158 had a significantly larger decay index and therefore weaker overlying field than AR 12192. These results suggest that the coronal magnetic helicity and the decay index of the overlying field can provide a clue about the occurrence of CMEs.

One-dimensional ZnMn2O4 nanowires have been prepared and investigated as anode materials in Li rechargeable batteries. The highly crystalline ZnMn2O4 nanowires about 15 nm in width and 500 nm in length showed a high specific capacity of about 650 mAh.g-1 at a current rate of 100 mA.g-1 after 40 cycles. They also exhibited high power capability at elevated current rates, i.e., 450 and 350 mAh.g 1 at current rates of 500 and 1000 mA.g 1, respectively. Formation of Mn3O4 and ZnO phases was identified by ex situ X-ray diffraction （XRD） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM） studies after the initial discharge-charge cycle, which indicates that the ZnMn2O4 phase was converted to a nanocomposite of Mn3O4 and ZnO phases immediately after the electrochemical conversion reaction.
