Comparison of the effects of bevacizumab and ranibizumab injection on corneal angiogenesis in an alkali burn induced model

·AIM:To investigate the effects of bevacizumab and ranibizumab on corneal neovascularization in an alkali burn-induced model of corneal angiogenesis. ·METHODS:Fifteen Wistar-Albino rats were divided randomly into 3 groups after chemical cauterization of the cornea. The first group received a single dose of 0.1mL saline solution as a control group whereas second and third groups received a single dose of 2.5mg bevacizumab or 1mg ranibizumab by subconjunctival injection, respectively. After three weeks, the rat corneas were evaluated by biomicroscopy and corneal photographs were taken. The percentage of neovascularization area, length of the longest new vessel, corneal oedema and corneal opacity scores were assessed. ·RESULTS:The analysis of digital photographs showed that the percentage of neovascularization area to the total corneal area, the length of the longest new vessel, corneal oedema and opacity scores were significantly lower in both study groups compared to the control group (P <0.05). Additionally, the percentage of corneal neovascularization area, the length of the longest new vessel and corneal opacity score were less with bevacizumab than ranibizumab. ·CONCLUSION:Subconjunctival bevacizumab and ranibizumab treatments may be effective methods in reducing corneal neovascularization. Furthermore, bevacizumab is more effective than ranibizumab in the inhibition of corneal neovascularization.

AIMTo investigate the oxidative stress status of the aqueous humor and serum of patients with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEG) and to measure paraoxonase (PON) and arylesterase (ARE) *** total of 78 patients were enrolled in the study, with 26 patients in each separate group. The patients were divided into three groups: the first group entailed PEX syndrome patients, while the second group consisted of patients with PEG and the third group involved patients with no additional systemic diseases, other than the diagnosis of cataract as control. Total oxidative stress (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), PON, and ARE levels in aqueous humor and serum were ***, PON and arylesterase levels in aqueous humor and serum of the PEX syndrome and PEG patients were significantly decreased compared with control group (P<0.05). TOS values were higher in patients with PEX syndrome and PEG than controls (P<0.05). TAC, PON and ARE levels of aqueous humor did not differ significantly between the PEX syndrome and PEG groupsCONCLUSIONThese findings are potentially of significance and add to the growing body of evidence for oxidative stress in PEX syndrome and PEG. Decreased antioxidant defense and increased oxidative stress system may play an important role in the pathogenesis of PEX syndrome and PEG.

·AIM:To evalaute the effect of fixed-combination latanoprost 0.005%/timolol maleate 0.5% and dorzolamide hydrochloride 2%/timolol maleate 0.5% on postoperative intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification cataract surgery.·METHODS:This study is a prospective,randomized,double-masked and *** study included 90 eyes of 90 patients which were scheduled to have phacoemulsification *** were randomly assigned preoperatively to 1 of 3 groups (30 eyes of 30 patients).Two hour before surgery,the patients received one drop latanoprost/timolol (group 1),dorzolamide/timolol (group 2) and placebo (group 3,control group).The IOPs were measured at preoperative and postoperative 4,8,and 24 hours.·RESULTS:The preoperative mean intraocular pressure was not statistically significant between both drug groups and control *** group 1 and 2,the postoperative mean IOP [group1:(14.03?à3.15)mmHg and group 2:(14.16?à4.43)mmHg] at 24 hours were significantly lower than the control group [(16.93?à3.70)mmHg,(P 0.05).·CONCLUSION:When compared with placebo,the use of preoperative fixed combination of latanoprost/timolol and dorzolamide/timolol is an effective method for preventing intraocular pressure elevation in 24 hours after phacoemulsification surgery,but did not completely prevent IOP spikes.·

Hardaliye is a non-alcoholic beverage produced from red/black grapes by adding mustard seeds and lactic acid *** this study,it was aimed to determine the total phenolic content(TPC)and total antioxidant capacity(TAC)of hardaliye samples produced with three different grape varieties(Shiraz,Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon)before and after in vitro digestion,to determine their bioaccessibility,and to investigate their effects on reducing malondialdehyde(MDA)formation in meat *** decreased after in vitro digestion in all three hardaliye samples and their bioaccessibility values were 57.64%,41.54%,and 52.78%(for Shiraz,Merlot,and Cabernet Sauvignon hardaliye,respectively).After in vitro digestion TAC value according to the DPPH method increased in all samples and according to the CUPRAC method decreased in Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon hardaliye samples,while it increased in the Shiraz *** in vitro digestion,MDA value increased in control meat samples and decreased in the samples treated with hardaliye *** treatment with other beverages was effective in reducing the post-digestion MDA value of some meat samples,the hardaliye samples were more effective in reducing this value and the lowest MDA bioaccessibility(%)values were determined in those treated with hardaliye *** samples with the lowest values were meat doner 1 treated with Shiraz hardaliye(10.27%);burger patties 2 treated with Shiraz hardaliye(22.40%);and meatball 2 treated with Cabernet Sauvignon hardaliye(7.12%).These findings indicate that hardaliye has potential beneficial health effects and can be used for the design of healthy eating patterns due to its lipid oxidation reducing potential in the gastrointestinal tract.

Safety of prophylactic intracameral moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution after cataract surgery in patients with penetrating keratoplasty

AIM:To determine the safety of prophylactic intracameral moxifloxacin after cataract surgery in patients with penetrating keratoplasty(PKP).METHODS:In this retrospective study of consecutive patients who had phacoemulsification cataract surgery after PKP, were treated with intracameral moxifloxacin0.5% ophthalmic solution(0.5 mg/0.1 mL). The main outcome measures were anterior chamber reaction, best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), corneal endothelial cell count(ECC), and central corneal thickness(CCT).RESULTS:Fifty-five patients were recruited(26 males,29 females). The mean age was 54.36±4.97y(range 45-64y).All eyes had improved postoperative BCVA. The mean BCVA was 0.25 preoperatively and 0.57 postoperatively,which was statistically significant(P <0.001). One eye had 3+, 7 eyes had 2+, 12 eyes had 1+ and 8 eyes had trace amount of aqueous cells on the first day after surgery. All eyes had no anterior chamber cells at subsequent follow up examinations. Effective phacoemulsification time was 4.33 ±1.01 s. The mean ECC was 2340.20 cells/mm2 preoperatively and 1948.75 cells/mm21 mo postoperatively(P <0.001). The increase of21.09 μm in postoperative pachymetry 1mo after surgery was statistically significant(P <0.001).CONCLUSION:Nountowardeffectswereobservedafter intracameral injection of moxifloxacin(0.5 mg/0.1 mL) in terms of anterior chamber reaction, CCT, ECC, and visual rehabilitation at the conclusion of cataract surgery in patients with PKP.

AIM：To evaluate the long-term sucess rate of laserassisted dacryocystorhinostomy （L-DCR） in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction （NDO）.METHODS：Forty-one eyes of forty patients aged between 21-85y （mean 56.7y） who underwent L-DCR for the treatment of NDO were included in this retrospective,non-randomized study. The follow-up time was *** sucess was defined as the disappearance of epiphora under normal conditions and the presence of a patent ostium on lacrimal irrigation. Anatomical success was defined as a patent lacrimal passage on syringing besides continuing epiphora. Surgical failure was defined as persistent epiphora and closed ***：Twenty-seven of 40 patients （67.5%） were female and 13 of 40 patients （32.5%） were male. The NDO was right-sided in 17 （42.5%） patients and left-sided in 22（55%） patients whereas 1 （2.5%） patient had undergone bilateral surgery. In 11 （27.5%） patients there were additional nasal abnormalities requiring simultaneous surgical approach. The average time for L-DCR was 26.50±4.9min（16-39min） and the average total amount of laser energy used was 287±27.9 J （239-367 J）. At the 5y follow-up, anatomical sucess rate was 75.0%（30 patients） and functional success rate was 65.0%（26 patients）, whereas surgical failure was seen in 25%（10 patients）. Revision of surgery was performed in 10 cases （25.0%）; failure of revision surgery was seen in 2 cases（5.0%）.CONCLUSION： Transcanalicular L-DCR is a reliable and fast procedure in the treatment of NDO. It can be alternative to external DCR which is accepted as the gold standard currently. The functional and anatomical success rate is higher in the first months and years, but still satisfactory at fifth year.

AIMTo evaluate and compare corneal biomechanical findings measured by ocular response analyzer, topographic and pachymetric findings in patients with unilateral keratoconus patients and healthy *** is an observational, case-control study. Patients with keratoconus in one eye and forme fruste keratoconus in the fellow eye were compared with sex and age matched with controls healthy subjects. All subjects were evaluated with rotating scheimpflug imaging system. The receiver-operating-characteristic curves were analyzed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the ***-seven patients with keratoconus in one eye and forme fruste keratoconus in the fellow eye were compared with 40 eyes of 40 normal subjects. Corneal hysteresis (CH) was 8.0±1.7 mm Hg in keratoconus group, 8.3±1.6 mm Hg in forme fruste keratoconus group, and 9.8±1.6 mm Hg in control groups (P=0.54 between keratoconus and forme fruste keratoconus groups, P<0.01 between control group and other groups). Corneal resistance factor (CRF) was 7.1±2.2 mm Hg in keratoconus group, 7.8±1.2 mm Hg in forme fruste keratoconus group and 9.9±1.5 mm Hg in control group (P<0.001 between control group and other groups). Using receiver-operating-characteristic analysis, the area under curve values of the parameters to distinguish forme fruste keratoconus from control subjects were: CH (0.768), CRF (0.866). Best cut-off points were 9.3 mm Hg and 8.8 mm Hg for CH and CRF *** response analyzer parameters (CH and CRF) are found to be significantly lower in forme fruste keratoconus patients compared to normal control subjects.
