AIM: To study the.re.ults for the.tre.tme.t of symptomatic he.orrhoids using rubbe. band ligation (RBL) me.hod. Me.HODS: A re.rospe.tive.study for 750 patie.ts who came.to the.colore.tal unit from June. 1998 to Se.te.be., 2006, data was re.rie.e. from archive. fi le.. RBL was pe.forme. using the.Mc Gown applicator on an outpatie.t basis. The.patie.ts we.e.aske. to re.urn to out-patie.t clinic for follow up at 2 wk, 1 mo, 6 mo and through te.e.hone.call e.e.y 6 mo for 2 ye.rs). Re.ULTS: Afte. RBL, 696 patie.ts (92.8%) we.e.cure. with no diffe.e.ce.in outcome.for se.ond or third de.re. he.orrhoids (P = 0.31). Symptomatic re.urre.ce.was de.e.te. in 11.04% afte. 2 ye.rs. A total of 52 patie.ts (6.93%) had 77 complications from RBL which re.uire. no hospitalization. Complications we.e.pain, re.tal ble.ding and vaso-vagal symptoms(4.13%, 4.13% and 1.33% of patie.ts, re.pe.tive.y). At 1 mo the.e.we.e.a significant improve.e.t in me.n SF-36 score. ove. base.ine.in five.ite.s, while.afte. 2 ye.rs the.e.we.e.improve.e.t in all ite.s ove. base.ine. but not significant. No significant manome.e.ic change. afte. band ligation. CONCLUSION: RBL is a simple. safe.and e.fe.tive.me.hod for tre.ting symptomatic se.ond and third de.re. he.orrhoids as an out patie.t proce.ure.with signifi cant improve.e.t in quality of life. RBL doe.n't alte. ano-re.tal functions.

Background: The.curre.t scre.ning tools for tube.culosis (TB) are.inade.uate.re.ulting in insufficie.t TB case.de.e.tion and continue. community transmission of TB. As the.world is ge.re. into finding missing TB case., ne. strate.ie. are.calle. for to aid in rapid ide.tification of TB case.. This study aime. to e.aluate.the.role.C-re.ctive.prote.n (CRP) in triaging patie.ts to ge. a de.initive.te.t for active.pulmonary TB diagnosis in urban Tanzania. Me.hods: A case.control study was conducte. among pulmonary TB (PTB) patie.ts and contacts without active.PTB. The.diagnosis of PTB was pe.forme. using Ge.e.pe.t MTB/RIF assay and culture. Blood was colle.te. from case. and controls for me.suring CRP le.e.s during re.ruitme.t. We.compare. socio-de.ographic characte.istics, clinical and laboratory parame.e.s obtaine. during re.ruitme.t and pe.forme. diagnostic accuracy analyse. for CRP. Re.ults: Out of all 193 study participants who we.e.involve. in final analysis, 147 (76.2%) we.e.male..
