The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a fundamental part of the immune system in nearly all vertebrates. DQA2 is a member of the MHC complex and an important candidate gene involved in susceptibility/resistance to various diseases. Therefore, the present study aimed at investigating computationally molecular genetic variation of DQA2 gene of cattle, sheep and goats especially on its evolution and differentiation within and among species as well as the attendant effects of the polymorphism on the function of DQA2 gene. A total of thirty three DQA2 nucleotide sequences comprising cattle (10), sheep (12) and goats (11) were retrieved from the GenBank. Forty seven amino acid substitutions of the wild type alleles located in the putative peptide coding region of caprine DQA2 alleles were obtained from the alignment of deduced amino acid sequences of goats. Out of these, eleven amino acid substitutions (H14L, H14R, L34M, E35L, G56S, G56R, 161V, A62E, D69Q, T72N and T72G) were returned neutral;an indication that they did not impair protein function. The Expected Accuracy (EA) ranged from 53% - 87%. For sheep, sixteen amino acid substitutions (A11P, A11T, A11G, A11M, L14S, L14T, V27L, V27S, G35S, S46T, D55E, L57T, L57A, L57G, K65Q and V68I) appeared beneficial while the rest forty seven appeared harmful (EA ranged from 53% - 93%). Twenty four amino acid substitutions did not impair the function of protein while seventy seven substitutions appeared to have a negative effect on the function of protein of cattle (EA ranged from 53% - 94%). The phylogeny based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences of DQA2 gene revealed the close relatedness of the caprine, ovine and bovine species. The present knowledge would be relevant for performing further genotype-phenotype research as well as pharmacogenetics studies in order to show association between caprine, ovine and bovine DQA2 allelic variation and the clinical progression of infectious diseases especially in a developing

Background: Polygonum multiflorum (brand name Fo-ti) is a Chinese herb used as an antioxidant, antiaging agent, and liver and kidney health. It can cause acute hepatotoxicity and even death. There is no published data on the effectiveness of N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) as a sole effective therapy. Case: A 23-year-old, healthy male, presented with jaundice and malaise of one-month duration. He had been taking a Chinese herb named Fo-Ti for 2 months. Physical examination revealed jaundice, with no stigmata of chronic liver disease. His laboratory results showed transaminitis with markedly elevated transaminases. Testings for infectious and autoimmune causes were unremarkable. The patient was admitted to the hospital. Fo-Ti was stopped and he was started on oral NAC as peroral protocol. He was discharged home on esomeprazole and oral NAC. He returned on the second day with worsening jaundice. He was readmitted and esomeprazole was discontinued. NAC was continued and his liver enzymes eventually improved. The supplement was tested by gas-chromatography mass spectrometry and measured the presence of emodin. Discussion: This case highlights the potential benefit of NAC as treatment of Polygonum multiflorum induced hepatotoxicity. The proposed mechanism of emodin induced liver injury is through disturbing glutathione metabolism in liver cells. This could explain the favorable response as NAC has the ability to replenish intracellular glutathione. Conclusion: Polygonum multiflorum use has been associated with severe and prolonged hepatotoxicity. Oral NAC should be considered in the treatment of these patients due to the favorable risk-benefit ratio.

The use of artificial diets to mass reared insect stock under laboratory conditions, promotes knowledge about the biology, behavior, and nutritional requirements of insects;with such information being fundamental for the formulation of efficient integrated pest management programs (IPM) strategies. However, the artificial diets used for rearing Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in the laboratory in this study, do not contain wheat germ, used for routine laboratory rearing. The aim of this study was to compare food preference and consumption by S. frugiperda larvae, as well as evaluate insect developmental parameters in the standard diet and the bean-based diets under laboratory conditions. Four artificial diets were used: a standard diet based on broad beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) used to rear S. frugiperda (D1), a diet with the substitution of two types of beans, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) (D2) and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L) (D3);and a diet of fresh corn leaves (D4), the host plant of the pest species. Using a multiple-choice test, we observed that the larvae preferred diets D4 followed by D1. The relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR), relative metabolic rate (RMR), approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), and the metabolic cost (CM) for S. frugiperda fifth instar larvae varied among diets. The diet D4 resulted in better ingestion, digestion, assimilation, and conversion of food, but with a metabolic cost to assimilate the food. The different bean varieties present in the diet influenced larval length, larval periods, larval survival, pupal periods, sex ratio, pupal weight, and pupal survival;but fecundity and longevity of adults were not affected. Background: Various thyroid abnormalities have been reported during heart failure (HF). The present study aimed to evaluate the burden, type, and associated factors of thyroid disorders in Cameroonian patients with heart failure. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from January to May 2020, involving volunteer adults followed for heart failure at the Yaoundé Central Hospital. Those receiving treatment that could cause thyroid dysfunction were excluded. Thyroid hormone levels (TSH, free T3, and free T4) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: A total of 63 patients (30 women;47.6%) were included. The median age was 65 (IQR: 56 - 70) years. The main etiology of heart failure was hypertension (52.4%) followed by valvular heart disease (14.3%). Thyroid dysfunction was seen in 38 (60.3%, [95% CI: 47.2 - 72.4]) patients, of which 30 (79%) had hypothyroidism and 8 (21%) had hyperthyroidism. The most frequent thyroid dysfunction was Low T3 syndrome in 27% (95% CI: 16.6 - 39.7) of the study population followed sub-clinical hypothyroidism in 19.1% (95% CI: 10.3 - 30.9) of patients. Patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) were more likely to have hypothyroidism than those with preserved ejection fraction (OR: 3.5, [95% CI: 1.2 - 9.9], p = 0.016). 视觉跟踪中,目标信息是不确定的非线性变化过程。随时间和空间而变化的复杂动态数据中学习出较为精确的目标模板并用它来线性表示候选样本外观模型,从而使跟踪器较好地适应跟踪作业中内在或外在因素所引起的目标外观变化是视觉目标跟踪研究的重点。提出一种新颖的多任务混合噪声分布模型表示的视频跟踪算法,将候选样本外观模型假设为由一组目标模板和最小重构误差组成的多任务线性回归问题。利用经典的增量主成分分析法从高维数据中学习出一组低维子空间基向量(模板正样本),并在线实时采样一些特殊的负样本加以扩充目标模板,再利用扩充后的新模板和独立同分布的高斯-拉普拉斯混合噪声来线性拟合当前时刻的候选目标外观模型,最后计算候选样本和真实目标之间的最大似然度,从而准确捕捉当前时刻的真实目标。在一些公认测试视频上的实验结果表明,该算法将能够在线学习较为精准的目标模板并定期更新目标在不同状态时的特殊信息,使得跟踪器始终保持最佳的状态,从而良好地适应不断发生变化的视觉信息(姿态、光照、遮挡、尺度、背景扰乱及运动模糊等),表现出更好的鲁棒性能。

The present pandemic has posed a crisis to the economy of the world and the health ***,the race to expand research to understand some good molecular targets for vaccine and therapeutic development for SARS-CoV-2 is *** newly discovered coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)is a positive sense,single-stranded RNA,and enveloped virus,assigned to the beta CoV *** virus(SARS-CoV-2)is more infectious than the previously detected coronaviruses(MERS and SARS).Findings from many studies have revealed that S protein and RdRp are good targets for drug repositioning,novel therapeutic development(antibodies and small molecule drugs),and vaccine *** such as chloroquine,convalescent plasma,monoclonal antibodies,spike binding peptides,and small molecules could alter the ability of S protein to bind to the ACE-2 receptor,and drugs such as remdesivir(targeting SARS-CoV-2 RdRp),favipir,and emetine could prevent SASR-CoV-2 RNA *** novel vaccines such as mRNA1273(Moderna),3LNP-mRNAs(Pfizer/BioNTech),and ChAdOx1-S(University of Oxford/Astra Zeneca)targeting S protein have proven to be effective in combating the present *** exploration of the potential of S protein and RdRp is crucial in fighting the present pandemic.

A Prospective Study on the Incidence and Predictors of Postpartum Depression among Pregnant Women Attending an Antenatal Clinic in Kano, Northern Nigeria

Depressive disorder is a major contributor to years lived with disability (YLD) globally. It is estimated that 13% of all women experience the disorder in the first year postpartum. Postpartum depression (PPD) has significant implications to the physical and mental wellbeing of both the mother and her baby. Only non-depressed pregnant women (score of ≤ 6 on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) were recruited into this study. Data collection was done at 2 different stages;at recruitment stage (during the third trimester of pregnancy) and at the follow up stage (4th - 6th week postpartum). During the recruitment stage, intimate partner violence (IPV) and level of social support perception, among the women, were assessed using Hurt Insult Threaten Scream (HITS) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaires respectively. While at the follow up stage, the Obstetric questionnaire and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-7) were used respectively to obtain obstetric-related data and to diagnose for occurrence of depression. The incidence of PPD was found to be 16.34%. Several factors such as level of education, husband’s socioeconomic status, stressful life events, low perception of social support, obstetric instrumentation and not having a baby of preferred gender were significantly associated with PPD. Positive predictors of PPD included not practicing breast feeding (OR = 186.72, 95% CI = 8.32 - 4188.35), family history of mental illness (OR = 4.95, 95% CI = 1.04 - 23.81) and pregnancy lasting beyond 40 weeks (OR = 7.26, 95% CI = 1.51 - 34.88). High incidence of PPD with numerous associated but largely modifiable risk factors call for more proactive measures, such as PPD screening among pregnant women.

Since oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) does not breed true, tissue culture-derived material is the resource of choice for achieving oil palm homogeneity in terms of growth and yield. Currently, no genomic tagging method is available with which one could verify the ortet (tissue donor oil palm) from which the clonal planting material (ramets) origi-nated, particularly in cases of unsatisfactory performance. Thus, Sime Darby Plantation used 10 genomic microsatellite markers to genotype 8 sets of 5 ramets +1 ortet and 2 single ortets. The average genetic distance (D) among oil palms from the same set of ramets and ortet was 0.0000 with the exception of sets containing off-type ramets (D = [0.0834 - 0.1505]). The dendrogram showed that the ramets and their ortet of origin formed a sub-cluster, confirming their simi-larity. The 10 microsatellite markers were valuable to Sime Darby as tools for verification of ramet-to-ortet relation-ships and for the identification of off-types. Furthermore, the set of 10 markers revealed a high expected heterozygosity (He = 0.634) that is a high expected heterosis effect on which yield depends.
