In recent years,government investments in implementing restrictive public policies on the treatment and discharge of effluents from the aquaculture industry have increased.Hence,efficient and cleaner methods for aquaculture production are needed.Recirculating aquaculture systems(RAS)offers water conservation by recycling the treated aquaculture water for reuse.RAS wastewater treatment using a moving bed bioreactors(MBBRs)process has been considered well suited for maintaining good water quality,thereby making fish farming more sustainable.Currently,improvements were achieved in tackling the influence of salinity,organic matter,disinfectant,and bioreactor start-up process on the MBBR performance efficiency.This review highlights an updated overview of recent development made using MBBR to treat the residual water from RAS.Precisely,nitrification and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification(SND),and other hybrid processes for nitrogen removal were elucidated.Finally,future challenges and prospects of MBBRs in RAS facilities that need to be considered were also proposed.

This study details soil’s physical and chemical properties in a rice-grown environment in Minna environs Niger State, Nigeria, under different soil and water conservation practices. Soil samples were collected at 0 - 10 cm, 10 - 20 cm and 20 - 30 cm, respectively, using a soil auger to determine their physical and chemical properties such as moisture content, particle size, bulk density, particle density, porosity and organic matter. The textural classification determined the percentage dominance of the soil types in each study site location. The moisture content of site 1 ranged between 14.3% to 13.7%, site 2 ranged between 13.2% to 10.2%, site 3 ranged between 15.4% to 13.2%, site 4 ranged between 15.6% to 13.6% and site 5 ranged between 16.1% to 10.9%. The clay content of sites 3, 4 and 5 is higher than that of sites 1 and 2, while the silt contents of sites 1, 2 and 3 are higher than that of sites 4 and 5. The mean value of soil organic carbon from each study location was 2.37%, 2.03%, 2.43%, 2.07% and 2.17% for sites 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Therefore, site 1 is susceptible to erosion because of poor infiltration rate and well-ploughed or cultivated land by the tractor (harrowed). The particle sizes analysis indicated that the soil type in Site 1 and Site 2 is mainly sandy loam, while Site 3 and Site 5 are mainly loamy and predominantly clay loam in Site 4.

Background: The choice of the appropriate operative intervention in patients with late and neglected hip fracture continuous to be a huge dilemma for orthopedic surgeons. Purpose: To evaluate the satisfaction or otherwise of some treatment options using the modified Harris-hip score (HHS) in resource poor setting. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at ATBUTH, Bauchi. Data of 60 patients over the age of 18 years with hip fractures (femoral neck, intertrochanteric and sub trochanteric fractures) who had operative intervention between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2020 with cannulated screws, Proximal femur lock compression plate (PFLCP), cementlessor cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA). Results: The mean age of studied patients was 65.7 ± 16.1 years, with age ranging from 19 - 101 years. M:F ratio was 1.2:1 across all age groups and 1:1.4 amongst those >60 years. 51 patients (85%) presented > 1 week after injury with 24 patients (40%) sustaining hip fractures from low energy trivial indoor fall and 28 patients (46.7%) mostly younger sustaining fractures from high energy motor vehicular accident (MVA). The prevalence rate for femoral neck, intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures were 32 (53.3%), 17 (28.3%) and 11 (18.3%) respectively. From the data retrieved, 21patients (35.0%), 17 patients (28.3%), 20 patients (33.3%) and 2 patients (3.3%) had PFLCP, cemented BHA, cementless BHA and cannulated screw fixation respectively. Most (66.7%) of those who had PFLCP achieved satisfactory radiologic union and there was also 94.1% and 85% satisfactory outcome rate amongst the patients with cemented BHA and cementless BHA respectively. Irrespective of the operative intervention method at 1 year follow-up, there was a statistically significant improvement in post-operative HHS (P value 0.02), with 83.4% having good to excellent results. Background: Ethmoidal polyposis coexisting with adenoid enlargement and tympanic membrane perforation is a rare condition in otolaryngological practice. Evidences have shown that antrochoanal polyp often times coexists with adenoid enlargement especially in the young which was in sharp contrast to ethmoidal polyposis occurring in the presence of adenoid enlargement. Moreover, the hidden location of nasopharynx housing the adenoids, coupled with the masking effect of bilateral sinonasal polyps, leads to inadvertent misdiagnosis of this complex pathology with subsequent difficulty in providing effective management. Case Presentation: A 24 year-old lady presented with recurrent bilateral nasal obstruction that became persistent associated with nasal discharge and anosmia. She also had recurrent right otorrhoea with associated hearing loss. Diagnostic rigid nasal endoscopy revealed mucoid discharge with bilateral polypoid masses filling both nasal cavities. Otoendoscopic finding revealed a small (about 5%) central tympanic membrane perforation. A clinical assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis complicated by chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) was made. A non-contrast CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed isodense lesions in the nasal cavities, all paranasal sinuses and the entire nasopharynx. She had endoscopic sinus surgery and a nasopharyngeal clearance biopsy. The nasal, paranasal and nasopharyngeal masses had histologic confirmation of inflammatory nasal polyps and lymphoid (adenoid) hyperplasia respectively. Her condition improved remarkably with subsequent medical treatment. She was followed up for 8 months and no recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Sinonasal polyposis can coexist with adenoid hypertrophy and middle ear disease as a single pathological condition. Hence, a high index of suspicion and thorough evaluation become necessary for making timely diagnoses and instituting effective management.

Mpox disease is caused by a double-stranded DNA virus, genus Orthopoxvirus of the family Poxviridae. The incubation period is usually 6 to 13 days but can range from 5 to 21 days while symptoms and signs may persist for 2 to 5 weeks. Although, the clinical features are usually less severe when compared to the deadly smallpox, the disease can be fatal with case fatality rate between 1% and 10%. In Imo State, Nigeria, there has been a changing epidemiology of the disease in the last 6 years and the frequency and geographic distribution of cases have progressively increased. This study aims to conduct a review of the disease epidemiology between 2017 and 2023 and implications for surveillance in Imo State. Surveillance data from the Surveillance Outbreak Response and Management System (SORMAS) was extracted between January 2017 and December 2023 across the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Imo State. A line list of 231 suspected cases was downloaded into an excel template and analyzed using SPSS® version 20 software. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics and associations were tested using Fischer’s exact at 0.05 level of significance. Of the 231 suspected cases, 57.1% (132) were males, 42.9% (99) were females and the modal age group was between the ages of 0 - 4 (32.5%). Eight (8) LGAs (districts) accounted for 71% (n = 164) of all the suspected cases. 21.2% (49) were confirmed positive, 27 males (55.1%) and 22 females (44.9%) (p > 0.05). Modal age group was 20 - 24 (22.4%, n = 11), 18% (9) were children under 14 years, p > 0.05. Case fatality rate was 8% (n = 4). There was no significant association between mortality and age group. Five (5) LGAs accounted for about 60% (29) of all confirmed cases. These LGAs contribute only 20% to the total population in the State. A common assertion is that alkaline solution aids oil mobilization by generating in situ soap,or by lowering interfacial tension(IFT)to ultra-low values in synergy with surfactants.This study takes a different approach that involves the alkaline dissolution of detrital quartz grains of sandstone reservoirs to create pathways for oil migration and accumulation.Quartz dissolution via alkaline injection will result in changes in permeability and porosity.This study performed high-pH core flooding on Berea sandstones using core displacement equipment.Silica molybdate spectrophotometry was applied to measure the amount of dissolved silica.Inlet and confining pressure variations were also observed.The molar concentration of NaOH varied at 0.5 M and 1.0 M.The results show higher initial silica dissolution for 0.5 M NaOH(˃200mg/L)compared to 1.0 M NaOH(20 mg/L),which can be attributed to the presence of pre-existing dissolved silica and precipitates in the system prior to the first injection phase.Nonetheless,a steady quartz dissolution rate of 0.4 mg/L/hr for 20 h was only achieved at 1.0 M.Conversely,an abrupt drop in quartz dissolution to below 0 mg/L was recorded for 0.5 M NaOH after 3 h of dissolution.At higher molar concentration of injected alkaline solution,both confining and inlet pressures increased from 8 and 5 bars to 12 and 11 bars as a result of the increased secondary phase of(hydr)oxides or precipitates in the pores.Thus,it can be inferred that the effect of alkaline solution on quartz dissolution is strongly dependent on molar concentration.

Evaluation of WEPP versus EGEM and empirical model efficiencies in predicting ephemeral gully erosion around Mubi area,Northeast Nigeria

Evaluation of prediction models is crucial to achieving valid information on erosion processes and their management choices.WEPP model efficiency in predicting ephemeral gully(EG)erosion was recently tested and compared with both EGEM and empirical models.The models abilities to predict EG erosion were validated using measured estimates at the 6 eroding locations around Mubi area in Northeast Nigeria between April 2008 and October 2009.Each location consisted of 3 watersheds where data on soils,climate,slope,management practices,EG shapes and dimensions were collected.Data on relevant soil properties were collected in the field and then analyzed in laboratory.The mass of soil loss(MSL)predicted by empirical,EGEM and WEPP models were compared with the measured using paired T-test,regression graphs(r^(2)-values),error analysis,and analysis of variance(ANOVA)in a completely ran-domized design.The EG erosion losses varied significantly(P≤0.05)between sites and years.No sig-nificant(P≤0.05)differences were observed between measured and the empirically predicted aggregate MSL.The measured aggregate MSL strongly correlated with those predicted by empirical(r^(2)=0.67),than with EGEM(r^(2)=0.57),and WEPP(r^(2)=0.53)models.Slight over and under-prediction instances against the measured erosion were noted with all the models.The WEPP model was found to slightly over-predict MSL when compared to either the empirical or EGEM model.The prediction quality of the models was generally impressive.Future works should focus more on local inputs such as climate,plants,management,and tillage data for use with WEPP.

A field study was carried out to assess soil loss from ephemeral gully(EG)erosion at 6 different locations(Digil,Vimtim,Muvur,Gella,Lamorde and Madanya)around the Mubi area between April,2008 and October,2009.Each location consisted of 3 watershed sites from where data was collected.EG shape,land use,and conservation practices were noted,while EG length,width,and depth were measured.Physico-chemical properties of the soils were studied in the field and laboratory.Soil loss was both measured and predicted using modeled empirical equations.Results showed that the soils are heterogeneous and lying on flat to hilly topographies with few grasses,shrubs and tree vegetations.The soils comprised of sand fractions that predominated the texture,with considerable silt and clay contents.The empirical soil loss was generally related with the measured soil loss and the predictions were widely reliable at all sites,regardless of season.The measured and empirical aggregate soil loss were more related in terms of volume of soil loss(VSL)(r^(2)=0.93)and mass of soil loss(MSL)(r^(2)=0.92),than area of soil loss(ASL)(r^(2)=0.27).The empirical estimates of VSL and MSL were consistently higher at Muvur(less vegetation)and lower at Madanya and Gella(denser vegetations)in both years.The maximum efficiency(M_(se))of the empirical equation in predicting ASL was between 1.41(Digil)and 89.07(Lamorde),while the M_(se) was higher at Madanya(2.56)and lowest at Vimtim(15.66)in terms of VSL prediction efficiencies.The M_(se) also ranged from 1.84(Madanya)to 15.74(Vimtim)in respect of MSL predictions.These results led to the recommendation that soil conservationists,farmers,private and/or government agencies should implement the empirical model in erosion studies around Mubi area.

A field adaptation test of the Ephemeral Gully Erosion Model(EGEM)to predict ephemeral gully(EG)erosion was carried out in the 2008 and 2009 farming seasons in the Mubi area,NE Nigeria.Land use,conservation practices,and EG channel features were measured and/or noted at each site.Soil loss varied among the sites and seasons.The measured area,volume,and mass of soil loss were used to test the standard EGEM_(std),and the adapted models'(EGEM_(Ad) and EGEM_(Al))prediction efficiencies.The result showed that EGEM_(std) could not predict the area of soil loss adequately.Both EGEM_(Ad) and EGEM_(Al) were efficient and better adapted to predicting area,volume,and mass loss from EG erosion.The adapted models are therefore strongly recommended for implementation in the study area.

BACKGROUND Urethral stricture is the abnormal narrowing of the urethra due to spongiofibrosis.The established aetiological factors for urethral stricture abound in our environment.However,the application of a penile rubber band to prevent enuresis thereby causing this pathology is not a familiar occurrence.Patients with enuresis can suffer psycho-social challenges and trauma,especially for a child due to peer stigmatization.This has a great impact on the child's psyche and may affect even his performance at school.The aim of this paper is to highlight the psychosocial impact and management challenges of a child with enuresis(nocturnal urinary incontinence).CASE SUMMARY This is the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with a history of nocturnal urinary incontinence since birth and lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)for 3 years culminating in chronic urinary retention.He maintained a normal urge to micturate and continent of urine during the daytime before the onset of LUTS.He had an antecedent longstanding history of tying a rubber band to the penile shaft mostly before going to the bed at night to prevent enuresis due to his peer stigmatization.He was acutely ill-looking,with distended suprapubic region.The phallus and scrotum were enlarged and oedematous with a circumferential proximal penile shaft scar and ventral penile shaft urethrocutaneous fistula.He was diagnosed to have complete short segment bulbopenile stricture and right ectopic ureter.He subsequent had augmented anastomotic urethroplasty and bilateral non-refluxing ureteroneocystostomy at different sitting.CONCLUSION The adherence to surgical principles of urethral stricture and enuresis management where surgically correctable in a child is associated with the resolution of enuresis and social reintegration.
