Exercise is more than medicine: The working age population's well-being and productivity

Background： Physical activity （PA） includes muscle activity during exercise, manual work, and leisure time activities including sport. Conflicting results exist regarding health effects of PA that may deteriorate with manual work and elite sports, but improve when performed in moderation in accordance with international guidelines and may additionally enhance well-being and productivity. Methods： In Denmark 15 randomized controlled trials have been conducted, introducing exercise at the workplace enrolling 〉3500 workers. The interventions lasted from 10 to 52 weeks and offered -1 h weekly supervised exercise during working hours according to the concept of intelligent physical exercise training （IPET） that is based on evidenced sports sciences training principles and tailored to work exposure, employee health status, and physical capacity. Questionnaire surveys and health checks including blood and muscle sampling were performed at baseline and follow-up. The job groups included： office and computer workers, dentists, industrial technicians, cleaning personnel, health care workers, construction workers, and fighter/helicopter pilots. Results： In all job groups significant improvements were documented regarding health outcomes. These were job group specific： neck pain was reduced among office and computer workers, dentists, industrial laboratory technicians, health care workers as well as fighter pilots. Cardio- respiratory fitness--a health risk indicator for cardio-metabolic diseases--was improved among office and computer workers, health care workers, and construction workers. Additionally, other improvements were evidenced such as increased muscle strength and balance control. Importantly, productivity increased with improved muscle strength and decreased body mass index. Conclusion： IPET does enhance health if an exercise program with evidenced efficacy is implemented by expert trainees with support of the employer. Accordingly, in every study group outcomes of

风蚀引起大量植物营养的输移，导致土壤养分和土地生产力的变化。在加拿大Ａｌｂｅｒｔａ南部建立了２个风蚀预测系统（ＷＥＰＳ）模型的试验区。从２９次风蚀事件中，选取了４００多个风积物样品。通过对风积物中营养物含量与相邻原始表土中营养物含量的比较及作物产量的监测，发现在试验１区，２５ｃｍ高处风积物中全氮的平均富集率（风积物中养分、有机质与侵蚀表土中养分、有机质的比值）为１．１１，有机碳平均富集率为１．０２；试验Ⅱ区，全氮平均富集率为１．０８，有机碳为１．０５。土地生产力的变化通过春小麦的产量反映出来，随着风蚀的加强，春小麦的产量呈线性下降趋势。结果表明，必须采取有效措施控制风蚀，以确保加拿大半干旱草原地区的农业可持续发展。

Physical Activity, Mediterranean Diet and Biomarkers-Assessed Risk of Alzheimer’s: A Multi-Modality Brain Imaging Study

Increased physical activity and higher adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet (MeDi) have been independently associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Their association has not been investigated with the use of biomarkers. This study examines whether, among cognitively normal (NL) individuals, those who are less physically active and show lower MeDi adherence have brain biomarker abnormalities consistent with AD. Methods: Forty-five NL individuals (age 54 ± 11, 71% women) with complete leisure time physical activity (LTA), dietary information, and cross-sectional 3D T1-weigthed MRI, 11C-Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans were examined. Voxel-wise multivariate partial least square (PLS) regression was used to examine the effects of LTA, MeDi and their interaction on brain biomarkers. Age, gender, ethnicity, education, caloric intake, BMI, family history of AD, Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, presence of hypertension and insulin resistance were examined as confounds. Subjects were dichotomized into more and less physically active (LTA+ vs. LTA-;n = 21 vs. 24), and into higher vs. lower MeDi adherence groups (n = 18 vs. 27) using published scoring methods. Spatial patterns of brain biomarkers that represented the optimal association between the images and the groups were generated for all modalities using voxel-wise multivariate Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. Results: Groups were comparable for clinical and neuropsychological measures. Independent effects of LTA and MeDi factors were observed in AD-vulnerable brain regions for all modalities (p β load and lower glucose metabolism) were observed in LTA- compared to LTA+ subjects, and in MeDi- as compared to MeDi+ subjects. FDG and Amyloid PET in Cognitively Normal Individuals at Risk for Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease

having a parent affected by late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major risk factor for cognitively normal (NL) individuals. This study explores the potential of PET with 18F-FDG and the amyloid-β (Aβ) tracer 11C-Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB) for detection of individual risk in NL adults with AD-parents. Methods: FDG- and PiB-PET was performed in 119 young to late-middle aged NL individuals including 80 NL with positive family history of AD (Fh+) and 39 NL with negative family history of any dementia (Fh-). The Fh+ group included 50 subjects with maternal (Fhm) and 30 with paternal family history (Fhp). Individual FDG and PiB scans were Z scored on a voxel-wise basis relative to modality-specific reference databases using automated procedures and rated as positive or negative (+/-) for AD-typical abnormalities using predefined criteria. To determine the effect of age, the cohort was separated into younger (49 ± 9 y) and older (68 ± 5 y) groups relative to the median age (60 y). Results: Among individuals of age >60 y, as compared to controls, NL Fh+ showed a higher frequency of FDG+ scans vs. Fh- (53% vs. 6% p his effect was observed for both Fhm and Fhp groups. Among individuals of age ≤60 y, NL Fhm showed a higher frequency of FDG+ scans (29%) compared to Fh- (5%, p = 0.04) and a trend compared to Fhp (11%) (p = 0.07), while the distribution of PiB+ scans was not different between groups. In both age cohorts, FDG+ scans were more frequent than PiB+ scans among NL Fh+, especially Fhm (p h+ status. Classification according to PiB status was significantly less successful. Conclusions: Automated analysis of FDG- and PiB-PET demonstrates higher rates of abnormalities in at-risk Fh+ vs Fh-subjects, indicating potentially ongoing early AD-pathology in this population. AIM： To determine which IIRC scheme was used by retinoblastoma centers worldwide and the percentage of D eyes treated primarily with enucleation versus globe salvaging therapies as well as to correlate trends in treatment choice to IIRC version used and geographic region. METhODS： An anonymized electronic survey was offered to 115 physicians at 39 retinoblastoma centers worldwide asking about IIRC classification schemes and treatment patterns used between 2008 and 2012. Participants were asked to record which version of the IIRC was used for classification, how many group D eyes were diagnosed, and how many eyes were treated with enucleation versus globe salvaging therapies. Averages of eyes per treatment modality were calculated and stratified by both IIRC version and geographic region. Statistical significance was determined by Chi-square, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests using Prism. RESULTS： The survey was completed by 29% of physicians invited to participate. Totally 1807 D eyes were diagnosed. Regarding IIRC system, 27% of centers used the Children＇s hospital of Los Angeles （ChLA） version, 33% used the Children＇s Oncology Group （COG） version, 23% used the Philadelphia version, and 17% were unsure. The rate for primary enucleation varied between 0 and 100% and the mean was 29%. By IIRC version, primary enucleation rates were： Philadelphia, 8%; COG, 34%; and ChLA, 37%. By geographic region, primary enucleation rates were： Latin America, 57%; Asia, 40%; Europe, 36%; Africa, 10%, US, 8%; and Middle East, 8%. however, systemic chemoreduction was used more often than enucleation in all regions except Latin America with a mean of 57% per center （P〈0.0001）. Resistance of Nanoclay Reinforced Epoxy Composites to hyperthermal Atomic Oxygen Attack

Due to outstanding mechanical properties, heat resistance, and relatively facile production,nanoclay reinforced epoxy composites(NCRE composites) have been suggested as candidate materials for use on external surfaces of spacecraft residing in the low Earth orbit(LEO) environment. The resistance of the NCRE composites to bombardment by atomic oxygen(AO), a dominant component of the LEO environment, has been investigated. Four types of samples were used in this study. They were pure epoxy(0 wt% nanoclay content), and NCRE composites with different loadings of nanoclay—1 wt%, 2 wt%, and 4 wt%. Etch depths decreased with increasing nanoclay content, and for the 4 wt% samples it ranged from 28% to 37% compared to that of pure epoxy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) indicates that after AO bombardment, relative area of C-C/C-h peak decreased,while the area of the C-O, ketones peaks increased, and the oxidation degree of surfaces increased. New carbon-related component carbonates were detected on nanoclay containing composite surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that aggregates formed on nanoclay-containing surfaces after AO bombardment. The sizes and densities of aggregates increased with nanoclay content. The combined erosion depths, XPS and SEM results indicate that although all the studied surfaces got eroded and oxidized after AO bombardment,the nanoclay containing composites showed better AO resistance compared to pure epoxy,because the produced aggregates on surface potentially act as a physical "shield", effectively retarding parts of the surface from further AO etching.

In the Lower CretaceousMcmurray-Clearwater succession of the intracontinental Alberta Foreland Basin,Canada,detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology samples(referred to herein as DZ samples)have been used to interpret the strata as representing a paleo-continental-scale drainage ***,the majority of DZ samples are relatively small(n≈90–100),and syndepositional DZ(i.e.,crystallization agehan depositional age)are *** has forced a reliance on dinocysts with long stratigraphic ranges to chronostratigraphically subdivide the Mcmurray-Clearwater succession rather than employing maximum depositional ages(MDAs)derived from DZ ***,43 DZ samples(taken from20 subsurface cores)are assigned to 1 of 5 stratigraphic intervals,and in each stratigraphic interval all associated DZ samples are combined to produce a grouped DZ *** and comparison of individual and grouped DZ samples are used to(1)assess variability in provenance through time and space,and(2)assess the accuracy of chronostratigraphically subdividing the succession using *** the main paleo-drainage axis,a comparison of dissimilarity between DZ samples from the same stratigraphic interval,as well as between stratigraphic intervals,reveals increasing average dissimilarity between individual DZ samples and their respective grouped DZ samplewith increasing spatial separation of *** data indicate that in the Mcmurray Depocenter some sediment is sourced from local tributaries,leading to geographical provenance *** for all 43 DZ samples and groupedMDAs(gMDAs)for the 5 grouped DZ samples are compared to an ash-derived absolute age and existing *** theMcmurray Formation,comparison of MDAs to gMDAs shows that in basins with rare syndepositional DZ,the gMDA method improved depositional age estimates by transforming low-confidence MDAs(e.g.,youngest single grains)into high-confidence(multi-grain)*** the Clearwater Formationwhere
