Assessment of the autonomic nervous system is an appropriate biological marker for the well-being in erectile dysfunction

Aim： To investigate whether the autonomic nervous system （ANS） components are suitable biological markers for representing well-being in patients with erectile dysfunction （ED）. Methods： The present study included 74 male patients who had applied for check-ups in the cardiology outpatient clinic at Kirikkale University （Kirikkale, Turkey） and who had been diagnosed as having hyperlipidemia. Of these patients, 26 had an additional diagnosis of ED and made up the patient group. The remaining 48 patients formed the control group. Well-being was assessed with shortform 36 （SF-36）. The International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF） was used as a measure of libido and erectile function. Quantitative assessment of the ANS was made based on the analysis of heart rate variability by means of 24-h holter monitorization. Results： Comparisons between the ED and control groups showed significant differences only in energy scale of SF-36. The ED group also had significantly higher values of sympathetic activity. Except for the general health score of SF-36, which was found to be correlated with parasympathetic activity only in ED group, there were similar correlation patterns within the groups. Although well-being and sympathetic activity were correlated negatively, parasympathetic activity and well-being were correlated positively. Conclusion： Quantitative assessment of the ANS by heart rate variability analysis might be a suitable marker for well-being of patients with ED.

Surface-to-bed heat transfer for high-density particles in conical spouted and spout–fluid beds

Bed-to-surface heat transfer experiments from a vertically submerged cylindrical surface were conducted in laboratory-scale (Dc = 25 cm) conical spouted and spout–fluid beds at two different conical angles (31° and 66°) in the high particle density range (2500 kg/m3 ≤ρp ≤ 6000 kg/m3). The effects of the bed design parameters (conical angle and inlet diameter of spouting gas entrance) and operating conditions (static bed height, particle size, density, and spouting and fluidization gas flow rates) on the heat transfer characteristics were investigated in detail. The heat transfer coefficients were shown to be dependent on the density and size of the particles. The minimum stable spouting velocities of the denser and larger particles were higher, which led to higher operational spouting velocities and thereby resulted in higher heat transfer coefficients. The positive effect of increasing the particle diameter on heat transfer was more pronounced in the spout and at the spout–annulus interface, whereas this effect was diminished in the annulus region. The heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing spouting gas velocity up to 1.0Ums–1.1Ums, beyond which no significant change was observed regardless of the particle type. The heat transfer coefficient in the annulus decreased with increasing conical angle because of reduced particle circulation. The spout–fluid operation increased the heat transfer coefficient by a maximum of 10% at the expense of a significant increase of the total gas flow rate. This result was attributed to the inability of the fluidizing gas to penetrate the annulus. An empirical correlation for the average heat transfer coefficient in the annulus was also proposed based on the data obtained in this work.

A new approach to the surgical treatment of parasitic cysts of the liver:Hepatectomy using the liver hanging maneuver

AIM： To review 11 patients with parasitic cysts of the liver, who were treated by hepatic Iobectomy using the liver hanging maneuver （LHM）.METHODS： Between January 2003 and June 2006, we retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent surgical treatment due to parasitic cysts of the liver, at the Ege University School of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. Of these, the patients who underwent hepatic lobectomy using the LHM were reviewed and evaluated for surgical treatment outcome.RESULTS： Over a three-year period, there were 102 patients who underwent surgical treatment for parasitic cysts of the liver. Of these, 11 （10%） patients with parasitic cysts of the liver underwent hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM. Presenting symptoms were abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and cholangitis. Cyst locations were as follows： right lobe filled with cyst, 7 （63%）; segmental location, 2 （18%）; and multiple locations, 2 patients （18%）. All patients underwent hepatic Iobectomy with an anterior approach using the LHM. The intraoperative blood transfusion requirement was one unit for 3 patients and two units for one patient. Postoperative complications included pulmonary atelectasy （2, 18%） and pleural effusion （2, 18%）. No significant morbidity or mortality was observed.CONCLUSION： We concluded that hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM should be considered, not only for hepatic tumors or donor hepatectomy, but also to treat parasitic cysts of the liver.

Post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis:A systematic review for prevention and treatment

BACKGROUND Post endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is comparatively complex application. Researchers has been investigated prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP), since it has been considered to be the most common complication of ERCP. Although ERCP can lead various complications, it can also be avoided. AIM To study the published evidence and systematically review the literature on the prevention and treatment for PEP. METHODS A systematic literature review on the prevention of PEP was conducted using the electronic databases of ISI Web of Science, PubMed and Cochrane Library for relevant articles. The electronic search for the review was performed by using the search terms “Post endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis” AND “prevention” through different criteria. The search was restricted to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) performed between January 2009 and February 2019. Duplicate studies were detected by using EndNote and deleted by the author. PRISMA checklist and flow diagram were adopted for evaluation and reporting. The reference lists of the selected papers were also scanned to find other relevant studies. RESULTS 726 studies meeting the search criteria and 4 relevant articles found in the edited books about ERCP were identified. Duplicates and irrelevant studies were excluded by screening titles and abstracts and assessing full texts. 54 studies were evaluated for full text review. Prevention methods were categorized into three groups as (1) assessment of patient related factors;(2) pharmacoprevention;and (3) procedural techniques for prevention. Most of studies in the literature showed that young age, female gender, absence of chronic pancreatitis, suspected Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, recurrent pancreatitis and history of previous PEP played a crucial role in posing high risks for PEP. 37 studies designed to assess the impact of 24 different pharmacologic agents to reduce the development of PEP delivered

Effects of selenium on electrophysiological changes associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy

Our previous study has demonstrated that sodium selenite prevents oxidative stress, suggesting that selenium can improve diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Results from this study demonstrated that diabetes mellitus resulted in significant increased time to peak, as well as rheobase and chronaxie values. In addition, maximum depolarization, area under compound action potential, kinetics, and conduction velocities of fast and slow nerve fiber groups were decreased. Sodium selenite exhibited positive effects on alterations of diabetes mellitus-induced conduction velocity distribution. This neuroprotective effect was primarily observed in the area under compound action potential and compound action potential kinetic waveforms, as well as rheobase and chronaxie. Results from this study showed that selenium supplementation blocked the diabetes mellitus-induced shift of actively contributing nerve fibers, and restored levels towards age-matched control group values. Chronic selenate supplementation for experimental diabetic peripheral neuropathy exhibited protective effects in measured electrophysiological parameters.

Construction of Different Kinds of Atomic and Molecular Orbitals Using Complete Orthonormal Sets of ψ^α-ETO in Single Exponent Approximation

Using complete orthonormal sets of ψ^α-exponential type orbitals in single exponent approximation the new approach has been suggested for construction of different kinds of functions which can be useful in the theory of linear combination of atomic orbitals. These functions can be chosen properly according to the nature of the problems under consideration. This is rather important because the choice of the basis set may be play a crucial role in applications to atomic and molecular problems. As an example of application, different atomic orbitals for the ground states of the neutral and the first ten cationic members of the isoelectronic series of He atom are constructed by the solution of Hartree-Fock-Roothaan equations using ψ^1, ψ^0 and ψ^-1 basis sets. The cMculated results are close to the numerical Hartree-Fock values. The total energy, expansion coefficients, orbital exponents and virial ratio for each atom are presented.

Electronic Structure Analysis of USiO_4

Uranium is a member of Actinides and plays important role in nuclear science and technology. Electronicand structural investigations of actinide compounds attract major interest in science. The electronic structure andchemical bonding of coffinite USiO_4 are investigated by X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy (XAFS). U L_3-edge absorption spectrum in USiO_4 is compared with U L_3-edge spectra in UO_2 and UTe due to their different electronicand chemical structures. The study presents XANES (x-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure) and Extended XAFS(EXAFS) calculations of USiO_4 thin films. The full multiple scattering approach has been applied to the calculation ofU L_3 edge XANES spectra of USiO_4, UO_2 and UTe, based on different choices of one electron potentials according toUranium coordinations by using the real space multiple scattering method FEFF 8.2 code.

A novel approach to structural anisotropy classification for jointed rock masses using theoretical rock quality designation formulation adjusted to joint spacing

Rock quality designation(RQD)has been considered as a one-dimensional jointing degree property since it should be determined by measuring the core lengths obtained from *** index of jointing degree(AI_(jd))was formulated by Zheng et al.(2018)by considering maximum and minimum values of RQD for a jointed rock medium in three-dimensional *** accordance with spacing terminology by ISRM(1981),defining the jointing degree for the rock masses composed of extremely closely spaced joints as well as for the rock masses including widely to extremely widely spaced joints is practically impossible because of the use of 10 cm as a threshold value in the conventional form of *** overcome this limitation,theoretical RQD(TRQD_(t))introduced by Priest and Hudson(1976)can be taken into consideration only when the statistical distribution of discontinuity spacing has a negative exponential *** index of the jointing degree was improved using TRQD_(t) which was adjusted to wider joint spacing by considering Priest(1993)’s recommendation on the use of variable threshold value(t)in TRQD_(t) *** applications of the improved anisotropy index of a jointing degree(AI'_(jd))to hypothetical jointed rock mass cases,the effect of persistency of joints on structural anisotropy of rock mass was introduced to the improved AI'_(jd) formulation by considering the ratings of persistency of joints as proposed by Bieniawski(1989)’s rock mass rating(RMR)*** real cases were assessed in the stratified marl and the columnar basalt using the weighted anisotropy index of jointing degree(W_AI'_(jd)).A structural anisotropy classification was developed using the RQD classification proposed by Deere(1963).The proposed methodology is capable of defining the structural anisotropy of a rock mass including joint pattern from extremely closely to extremely widely spaced joints.
