Bone marrow biopsy findings in brucellosis patients with hematologic abnormalities

Background Brucellosis can mimic various multisytem diseases, showing wide clinical polymorphism that frequently leads to misdiagnosis and treatment delay, further increasing the complication rates. In this study, we aimed to examine bone marrow biopsy findings in brucellosis cases presenting with hematologic abnormalities. Methods Forty-eight brucellosis cases were prospectively investigated. Complaints and physical examination findings of patients were recorded. Patients＇ complete blood count, routine biochemical tests, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and serological screenings were performed. Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration was performed in patients with cytopenia, for bone marrow examination and brucella culture, in accordance with the standard procedures from spina iliaca posterior superior region of pelvic bone. Results Of the 48 patients, 35 （73%） were female and 13 （27%） were male. Mean age was （34.8±15.4） years （age range： 15-70 years）. Anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and pancytopenia were found in 39 （81%）, 28 （58%）, 22 （46%） and 10 patients （21%）, respectively. In the examination of bone marrow, hypercellularity was found in 35 （73%） patients. Increased megacariocytic, erythroid and granulocytic series were found in 28 （58%）, 15 （31%） and 5 （10%） patients, respectively. In addition, hemophagocytosis was observed in 15 （31%） patients, granuloma observed in 12 （25%） and increased eosinophil and plasma cells observed in 9 （19%） patients. Conclusion According to the results of our series, hemophagocytosis, microgranuloma formation and hypersplenism may be responsible for hematologic complications of brucellosis.

Introduction: Oncocytic neoplasms of the adrenal cortex are extremely rare and are usually nonfunctioning. Only a little more than fifty cases have been described in the literature. Case Presentation: We report the case of an adrenocortical oncocytic neoplasm with malignant potential in a 21-year-old female with co-secrete testosterone and cortisol. The patient had been operated of adrenal mass. Fallowing operation, the Cushing’s syndrome and high testosterone levels resolved. Conclusion: In our knowledge this is the first case in the l?terature which co-secret cortizol and testosterone in malign oncystoma.

Note on Lower Triassic Gondolelloid Conodont Rediversifications with Emphasis on the Spathian Recovery

Effect of a cervical collar on optic nerve sheath diameter in trauma patients

BACKGROUND:As advocated in advanced trauma life support and prehospital trauma life support protocols,cervical immobilization is applied until cervical spine injury is *** study aimed to show the difference in optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD)between patients with and without a cervical collar using computed tomography(CT).METHODS:This was a single-center,retrospective study examining trauma patients who presented to the emergency department between January 1,2021,and December 31,*** ONSD on brain CT of the trauma patients was measured and analyzed to determine whether there was a difference between the ONSD with and without the cervical ***:The study population consisted of 169 *** CT imaging of patients with(n=66)and without(n=103)cervical collars,the mean ONSD in the axial plane were 5.43±0.50 mm and 5.04±0.46 mm respectively for the right eye and 5.50±0.52 mm and 5.11±0.46 mm respectively for the left *** results revealed an association between the presence of a cervical collar and the mean ONSD,which was statistically significant(P<0.001)for both the right and left ***:A cervical collar may be associated with increased *** effect of this increase in the ONSD on clinical outcomes needs to be investigated,and the actual need for cervical collar in the emergency department should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Effects of pressure relief holes on coal burst:Insights from true-triaxial unloading tests

Drilling pressure relief is one of the methods to reduce the risk of coal bursts in deep ***,the effect of the drill hole orientations has not been studied well enough to understand their impact on the burst failure *** this study,we investigated two designs of drill hole *** first design includes drill holes located on the upper free face of the rectangular samples and labelled as upper hole(UH)and centre hole(CH)e the long axes of the drill holes are aligned with minor principal stress,s3,*** second design includes drill holes at the top(TH)and the side(SH)of the rectangular samples in which the long axes of the drill holes are aligned with the maximum,s1,and intermediate principal stress,s2,directions,*** coal samples with the proposed drill hole orientations were subjected to the true-triaxial unloading coal burst *** results show that the drill holes reduce the risk of coal ***,we found that the intensity of coal burst was significantly reduced with the SH-type,followed by the *** also observed that the coal burst intensity is reduced better for the CH,UH,TH,and SH-type drilling ***,it was found that the orientations of drill holes have little influence on the failure mode(splitting).The acoustic emission(AE)activities for coal with drill holes noticeably decreased,especially for the UH and CH *** drill holes reduced the upper limit of the AE entropy(chaos of microcracks generation).However,regarding reducing the coal burst risk,the TH and SH are less effective than UH and CH.

Immunotherapy in gastric cancer with liver metastasis:Challenges and opportunities

In this editorial,we review the article by Liu et al published in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery investigating the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy in patients with gastric cancer(GC)and liver ***,the fifth most com-monly diagnosed malignancy worldwide,presents a significant challenge due to its multifactorial etiology and a grim prognosis for unresectable or recurrent *** advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs)has revolutionized oncology;yet liver metastasis has been associated with reduced response rates,progression-free survival,and overall survival in various *** Che-ckMate-649 and KEYNOTE-859 trials demonstrated promising results with ICIs in advanced GC,particularly in patients with liver ***,a meta-analysis of liver metastatic solid tumors revealed worse outcomes with ICIs,high-lighting the need for further *** combined therapies,including ICIs with local treatments,show promise in improving outcomes,the nuanced landscape of ICIs in liver metastatic GC necessitates continued research for robust *** current contradictions in the literature underscore the impor-tance of cautious interpretation and the exploration of tailored approaches to enhance clinical efficacy in this challenging patient population.

Activated carbon derived from radiation-processed durian shell for energy storage application

A lignocellulosic biomass,durian shell,modified by radiolytic oxidizing species from gamma and electron beam irradiations,has been used as a starting material for activated carbon(AC)*** hydrothermal carbonization with ZnCl_(2)/FeCl_(3)and physical activation were employed in *** physicochemical and energy storage properties of the graphitic carbons were investigated using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope(FESEM),N_(2)adsorption-desorption,Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET),Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray Diffraction(XRD),Raman spectroscopy,Cyclic Voltammetry(CV),Galvanostatic Charge-Discharge(GCD)and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS).Biomass modification by radiolytic oxidizing species aided in improving the energy storage properties of the resultant ACs without significantly changing the textural *** radiation type played an important role on the surface functional groups,basal plane,and pore structures of the graphitic *** energy storage mechanism was based on a combination of EDLC and pseudo capacitances with high Coulombic *** highest specific capacitance obtained was 325.20 F/g providing capacity retention of 94.79%after 10,000 cycles.A promising method of AC production for energy storage application has therefore been successfully demonstrated.

Evaluation of periglacial landforms and formation of soil properties on the Mount Honaz,SW Türkiye

The main aim of this study is to explain periglacial processes on the summits of Mount Honaz(2571 m a.s.l.),define periglacial landforms,and determine the relationships between morphometric features and topographic *** circles,stony earth circles,non sorted steps,and non sorted stripes were identified on the summits of Mount ***'s correlation coefficient(r)and linear regression analyses were performed by taking metric measurements from 125 periglacial landforms to describe their morphometric features(length,width,height)of periglacial landforms and explain the relationships between them and topographic factors(elevation,slope).To explain the relationships between periglacial landforms and soil properties,soil samples from 11 periglacial landforms were taken and *** landforms,which continue to develop on the summits of Mount Honaz today,have been evaluated with present climate *** of soil samples indicates a notable impact of parent material on the genesis of periglacial *** high ratio of organic matter in mud circle and non sorted step landforms and the high lime ratio in stony earth circle landforms prove a strong relationship between the formation mechanisms of landforms and the soil ***,it is consistent with the findings obtained from the analysis that severe periglacial processes and washing and scavenging events are experienced more on the northern slopes.

Immunomodulatory activity of polycaprolactone nanoparticles with calcium phosphate salts against Leishmania infantum infection

Objective:To prepare and characterize polycaprolactone(PCL)nanoparticles loaded with sonicator fragmented(SLA)and freeze-thaw Leishmania antigens(FTLA)and to investigate the in vitro immunogenicity of antigen-encapsulated nanoparticles with calcium phosphate ***:The water/oil/water binary emulsion solvent evaporation method was used to synthesize antigen-loaded PCL *** were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and zeta potential *** cytotoxicity in J774 macrophages in vitro was determined by MTT *** addition,the amount of nitric oxide and the level of cytokines produced by macrophages were determined by Griess reaction and ELISA method,*** protective effect of the developed formulations was evaluated by determining the infection index percentage in macrophages infected with Leishmania ***:Compared to the control group,SLA PCL and FTLA PCL nanoparticles with calcium phosphate adjuvant induced a 6-and 7-fold increase in nitric oxide,***,the vaccine formulations promoted the production of IFN-γand *** PCL and FTLA PCL nanoparticles combined with calcium phosphate adjuvant caused an approximately 13-and 11-fold reduction in infection index,respectively,compared to the control ***:The encapsulation of antigens obtained by both sonication and freeze-thawing into PCL nanoparticles and the formulations with calcium phosphate adjuvant show strong in vitro immune stimulating ***,PCL-based antigen delivery systems and calcium phosphate adjuvant are recommended as a potential vaccine candidate against leishmaniasis.
