Microplastics(MPs)are synthetic contaminants that have received global attention due to their ubiquitous occurrence,extreme durability,and capacity to harm ecosystems and human *** study investigated the occurrence of MPs in three fish species(Channa striata,Puntius sophore and Anabas testudineus)collected from two locations(Ashulia Bridge and Mirpur Road)of the Turag River,which flows alongside the Dhaka city,*** abundance(items/individuals)was highest in Channa striata(3.8±0.6)from the Ashulia Bridge area and lowest in Puntius sophore(1.8±0.4)from the Mirpur Road *** was found to be the most dominant(89e93%)form of MPs followed by fragments(21 e35%),films(0e26%)and foams(0e5%).The dominant color of MPs was blue(69e83%),then red(20 e33%),black(11e14%),green(8e20%),and purple(6e8%).The majority(56e71%)of the MPs assessed were<0.5 mm in size,followed by 0.5e1.0 mm(29e33%)and 1e5 mm(38e53%).ATR-FTIR examination revealed three specific polymer varieties-PP(40%),PS(30%)and LDPE(30%).The results of this study provided a baseline of MPs pollution in one of the major protein sources freshwater fishes and raised concern on public health particularly who consume fishes from the urban waterways.

Bangladesh is a densely populated country where food crisis is one of the major issues where proper soil mapping is lacking till now. The purpose of this study is to prepare soil mapping of Bangladesh including different soil factors like pH, salinity, nutrients, texture, porosity, toxicity etc., along with general soil types and land availability through application of Geographical Information System (GIS). Q-GIS software and secondary data are used in this study. In present study, it was found that 12 types of soil texture were present in all around of Bangladesh and the maximum percentage of soil porosity values varied from 20% to 70%. A medium range of soil organic matter and strongly acidic soil was found all around the Bangladesh. It was found that the southern part of Bangladesh had slightly saline to highly saline soil. The major part of Bangladesh had medium high land which is very much preferable to agriculture. In Bangladesh, three categories of land such as highland, medium highland and low land cover 29%, 35% and 21% of total land, respectively. Agriculture land covers 9.5 million hectares in Bangladesh. The shifting rate based on agricultural use had been reported to be about 1% per year. At present, the amount of forest land covers 9.84% of total land of our country but 1976 it was 12.11%. Mangrove is now at 4.07% of total land mass of our country. In generally, 20 types of soils were found all around the country. Mapping of soil types described these 20 general soil types under 5 main categories and these are calcareous soil, non-calcareous soil, terrace soil, gray soil, peat and hill soils. This study will be helpful for the cultivator to cultivate appropriate crops in appropriate places after exploration at a glance.

Impact of Extreme Precipitation Intensity on Tea Production in the North-East of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a flood prone country where precipitation amount is irregular but sometimes extreme. Among the climatic parameters, precipitation is assumed as one of the vital indicators of ongoing climate change scenarios and is equally important for tea production. In this study, 7 and 9 tea estates of Sylhet and Sreemangal were selected to analyze tea production in relation to extreme precipitation intensity. Precipitation patterns namely 90th, 95th and 99th percentile were analyzed to find out the contribution of extreme precipitation and tea production. To attain the objectives, 3 hourly, daily, monthly, and total precipitation data from 1971 to 2014 were collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Board. Tea production data were collected from Bangladesh Tea Board, Sylhet. To find out extreme level of precipitation 90th, 95th, 99th percentile precipitation days were identified and analyzed. The analyses show that 1974, 1976, 1977, 1993, 1988, 1990, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004 were extreme precipitation years. The average precipitation of Sylhet was higher in 2000 than in 1992 and 2014. In Sreemangal, extreme precipitation was higher in 2014 than in 1992 and 2000. For both the regions, tea production was higher in 2000 and lower in 1992 and 2014. The result shows that more extreme precipitation was responsible for higher amount of tea production. The results suggest that extreme precipitation intensity was one of the responsible factors for higher amount of tea production in Sylhet and Sreemangal.

Soil salinity has become a major constraint to rice productivity in the coastal region of Bangladesh, which threatened food security. Therefore, field experiment was conducted at salt stressed Shyamnagor Upazilla of Satkhira district to improve the soil salinity status, sustainable rice production and suppression of global warming potentials. Selected soil amendments viz. trichocompost, tea waste compost, azolla compost and phospho-gypsum (PG) were applied in the field plots one week prior to rice transplanting. In addition, proline solution (25 mM) was applied on the transplanted rice plants at active vegetative stage. Gas samples from the paddy field were collected by Closed Chamber technique and analyzed in by Gas Chromatograph. The 25% replacement of chemical fertilizer (i.e., 75% NPKS) with trichocompost, tea waste compost, Azolla compost and Phospho-gypsum amendments increased grain yield by 4.7% - 7.0%, 2.3% - 7.1% 11.9% - 16.6% and 9.5% - 14.2% during dry boro rice cultivation, while grain yield increments of 5.0% - 7.6%, 2.3% - 10.2%, 12.8% - 15.3% and 10.2% - 15.3% were recorded in wet Aman season respectively, compared to chemically fertilized (100% NPKS) field plot. The least GWPs 3575 and 3650 kg CO2 eq./ha were found in PG Cyanobacterial mixture with proline (T10) and tea waste compost with proline (T8) amended rice field, while the maximum GWPs 4725 and 4500 kg CO2 eq./ha were recorded in NPKS fertilized (100%, T2) and NPKS (75%) with Azolla compost (T5) amended plots during dry boro rice cultivation. The overall soil properties improved significantly with the selected soil amendments, while soil electrical conductivity (EC), soil pH and Na+ cation in the amended soil decreased, eventually improved the soil salinity status. The stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen have been implemented to assess the recharge mechanisms in an area in the UAE bounded to the northwestern part of the Gulf of Oman and the southeastern part of the Arabian Gulf. The conversion of stable isotopes to deuterium excess was utilized as a supportive tool to understand the proc-ess of groundwater recharge. The concluding results of this study showed that the origin of moisture is the Mediter-ranean Sea. The precipitation is the main source of recharge, in which the precipitation having undergone evapora-tion before recharge occurs. The comparison between regression line for data collected in 1996 and regression line for samples collected in 2006 suggests that the precipitation water which recharged the groundwater, was diluted with groundwater and this dilution is observed from decreasing of the deuterium excess of collected groundwater samples with increasing isotopes of oxygen. The dilution of groundwater with the recharge water suggests mod-ern-day recharge as it is seen from high deuterium excess that exceeded the deuterium excess of LMWL and was close to MMWL.

An experimental and numerical program is carried out in this research to investigate the influence of CFRP sheets on the cyclic behavior of unconfined connections made with recycled *** is partially replaced by silica fume,iron flling and pulverised fuel ash using two different percentages:15%and 20%.Each specimen is partially loaded at the first stage and then specimens are repaired using CFRP *** repaired specimens are then laterally loaded until *** addition,a finite element model is built in ABAQUS and verfed using the experimental *** experimental results have shown that the repaired specimens have regained almost double the capacity of the un-repaired specimens and hence the adopted repair configuration is recommended for retroftting seismically vulnerable RC *** cement replacement percentage by silica fume,fuel ash or iron flling from 15%to 20%has reduced joint carrying capacity and weakened the *** is recommended using 15%pulverised fuel ash or silica fume as cement partial replacement to enhance the strength and ultimate drift of beam-column joints under cyclic *** filling concrete is also recommended but the enhancement is relatively less than that found with pulverised fuel ash concrete and silica fume concrete.
