Efficient green fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes were designed with a phosphorescent metal complex as a singlet exciton sensitizing host(SESH)for achieving high efficiency and low efficiency roll-off through exciton and polaron *** Pt(Ⅱ)complex(Pt-Trz)possessing a tetradentate ligand with a bulky blocking group not only suppresses the severe formation of excimer or dimer itself but also transfers radiative excitons to fluorescent dopant *** SESH assisted fluorescence(SESHF)device with Pt-Trz as the host exhibits the maximum external quantum efficiency of 13.3%and a lower efficiency roll-off compared with exciplex host device which is a general approach for harvesting triplet *** exciton dynamics modeling unravels that the SESHF device effectively utilizes triplet excitons in the host by intersystem crossing and resonance energy transfer from the triplet state of the host to the singlet state of the terminal *** quenching rates of the SESHF device are reduced by 11 times for triplet-triplet annihilation and 1.8 times for tripletpolaron annihilation compared with the exciplex device,which demonstrates that Pt-Trz could be a platform to be used as an efficient host for fluorophores.

Choledochal cysts are congenital anomalies of the biliary ducts, characterized by cystic dilatation of the *** diagnosis of this anomaly using ultrasonography (US) has been well documented. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently become an important complement to US in prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies. We herein report a patient in whom at 24 wk' gestation US suggested a right upper quadrant abdominal cyst and in whom at 26 wk' gestation MRI more clearly delineated the cyst and its surrounding structures and suggested a choledochal cyst, which was confirmed at postnatal surgery and histopathology.

AIM: To assess the computed tomography (CT) findings in the patients with hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) who presented with a short fatal clinical course in our hospital in order to demonstrate if there was any sign for ***: Between January 1997 and December 2000, CT scan of the abdomen was performed on 949 patients with acute abdominal pain in our emergency *** patients were found having HPVG. The CT images and clinical presentations of all these five patients were reviewed. REsuLTS: In reviewing the CT findings of the cases, HPVG in bilateral hepatic lobes, abnormal gas in the superior mesenteric veins, small bowel intramural gas, and bowel distension were observed in all patients. Dry gas in multiple branches of the mesenteric vein was also revealed in all cases. All the patients expired due to irreversible septic shock within 48 h after their initial clinical presentation in emergency room. Two patients had acute pancreatitis with grade D and E Balthazar classification and they expired within 24 h due to progressing septic shock under aggressive medical treatment and life support. Two patients with underlying end stage renal disease expired within 48 h even though emergent surgical intervention was undertaken. The excited bowels revealed severe ischemic change. One patient expired only a few hours after the CT examination. CONCLUSION: HPVG is a diagnostic clue in patients with acute abdominal conditions, and CT is the most specific diagnostic tool for its evaluation. The dry mesenteric veins are the suggestive fatal sign, especially for the deteriorating patients, with the direct effect on gastrointestinal perfusion.

Objective:To investigate the mechanism of antibacterial activity of luteoiin(LUT) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).Methods:The mechanism of anti-MRSA activity of LUT was analyzed by the viability assay in membrane permeabilizing agent ATPase inhibitors,and peptidoglycan(PGN) derived from Staphylococcus aureus(***).Also,transmission electron microscopy was used to monitor survival characteristics and changes in *** ***:Compared to the LUT alone,the optical density of suspensions treated with the combination of 125 μg/mL Tris and 230 μg/mL DCCD were reduced to 60%and 46%,***(15.6 μg/mL) gradually impeded the activity of LUT,and PGN(62.5 μg/mL) completely blocked the activity of LUT on ***:Increased susceptibility to LUT with me Tris and DCCD combinations is evident in all tested MRSA *** results indicate LUT synergy in increasing cytoplasmic membrane permeability and inhibiting *** PGN directly blocks the antibacterial activity of LUT,suggesting the direct binding of LUT with *** findings may be validated for the development of antibacterial agent for low MRSA resistance.

AIM: To examine the methylation levels of interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 3(IRAK3) and GLOXD1 and their potential clinical applications in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: m RNA expression and promoter methylation of IRAK3 and GLOXD1 in HCC cells were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RTPCR) and methylation-specific PCR(MSP), respectively. Using pyrosequencing results, we further established a quantitative MSP(Q-MSP) system for the evaluation of IRAK3 and GLOXD1 methylation in 29 normal controls and 160 paired HCC tissues and their adjacent nontumor tissues. We also calculated Kaplan-Meier survival curves to determine the applications of gene methylation in the prognosis of ***: IRAK3 and GLOXD1 expression was partially restored in several HCC cell lines after treatment with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine(DNA methyltransferase inhibitor; 5DAC). A partial decrease in the methylated band was also observed in the HCC cell lines after 5DAC treatment. Using GLOXD1 as an example, we found a significant correlation between the data obtained from the methylation array and from pyrosequencing. The methylation frequency of IRAK3 and GLOXD1 in HCC tissues was 46.9% and 63.8%, respectively. Methylation of IRAK3 was statistically associated with tumor stage. Moreover, HCC patients with IRAK3 methylation had a trend toward poor 3-year disease-free survival(P sues compared to normal controls and nontumor tissues. IRAK3 methylation was associated with tumor stage and poor prognosis of patients. These data suggest that IRAK3 methylation is a novel prognostic marker in HCC.

Taiwan has disadvantageous conditions for sediment-related disasters such as debris flows. The construction of engineering structures is an effective strategy for reducing debris flow disasters. However, it is impossible to construct engineering structures in all debris flow areas in a short period. Therefore, the government aims to gradually develop non-structural preventive strategies, including evacuation planning, debris flow disaster emergency action system, disaster resistant community program, recruitment of debris flow professional volunteers, debris flow warning systems, and land management strategies, to mitigate disasters and secure the safety of residents. This review describes the processes and effects of recent debris flow non-structural preventive strategies in Taiwan. The average number of casualties prior to the year 2000 was far higher than the corresponding number after 2000 because debris flow evacuation drills have been promoted since 2000 and the debris flow disaster emergency action system has been progressively improved since 2002. Furthermore, the changes in risks caused by debris flow disasters before and after the implementation of non-structural preventive strategies were used to explain the effectiveness of these strategies at the community level. The results showed that softwarebased non-structural preventive strategies can effectively reduce the casualties caused by debris flows at both the national and community levels.

Following the Chichi Earthquake （ML=7.3） in 1999, sediment-related disasters, such as landslides and debris flows, have become more frequent in Taiwan. Because engineering structures cannot be fully and rapidly emplaeed, the government has initiated non-structural hazard mitigation programs. Initially, community debris flow evacuation drills were promoted in 2000. Typhoon Toraji caused numerous debris flow events in July 2001, and some communities evacuated according to the drills, significantly reducing the numbers of possible casualties. Based on that result, the government expanded the program for evacuation drills. Secondly, the early warning system created after the Chichi Earthquake will prevent many potential future casualties. Rainfall threshold values for debris flow warnings in different areas are determined from information received from local weather stations and modified for local geomorphologic situations. Real- time information is gradually being integrated to create a debris flow disaster warning system, the goal of which is to provide warnings to zones in which debris flows are likely. The warning system was launched in 2005 and has two levels of alarms： yellow and red. The final, red alarm triggers enforced evacuation. Overall, the decrease in casualties from debris flows during the decade after the Chichi Earthquake is not the result of a decrease in number or severity of sediment related disasters, but is more directly related to the gradually improved early warning and evacuation system. However, the compound hazards resulting from Typhoon Morakotin 2009 remind us of the ongoing need for improving the existing mitigation system.

In recent years, studies on evaluation of the therapeutic and toxic activity of herbal medicinal products became available and popular. The advances in modern biotechnology have led to discovery of many new active constituents. However, it is a constant challenge to establish the pharmacological basis for efficacy and safety of herbal medicinal products. A better understanding of the effects and bioavailability of phytopharmaceuticals can help in discovering suitable and rational therapies. In this review, we present the bioavailability studies in immune system that has been conducted for some of the more important or widely used phytopharmaceuticals. Furthermore, various new drug targets worthy of using for drug development in immunomodulating herbal medicine area and their regulatory mechanisms are also discussed. Adverse effects, drug interactions, and contraindications are also discussed which show that caution should be exercised when combining phytopharmaceuticals with chemically derived pharmaceutical components.
