This study aimed at inducing the new source of resistance in sorghum using gamma irradiation. Dry seeds of three Sorghum varieties;Grinkan, ICV1049 and Sariaso14 were gamma-irradiated with 200 Gy, 300 Gy, 400 Gy and 500 Gy. Screening strategies involved a 2-year field and greenhouse experiments, where mutant Sorghum families, their parents and resistant control were artificially infected with Striga hermonthica seeds. Field screenings revealed induced genetic variability among them, forty families significantly reduced the number of emerged Striga plants or showed good Sorghum grain yield performance despite the infection by S. hermonthica ecotype from Burkina Faso. The induced putative resistant mutants were identified across the four applied gamma-irradiation doses. Greenhouse experiment confirmed Striga resistance in seven mutant Sorghum families leading to no emergence of Burkina’s S. hermonthica ecotype along with high resistance index (RI) and low Striga damage score. This paper describes a novel approach in developing a model for forecasting of global insolation on a horizontal *** the proposed forecasting model,constraints,such as latitude and whole precipitable water content in vertical column of that location,are *** parameters can be easily measurable with a global positioning system(GPS).The earlier model was developed by using the above datasets generated from different locations in *** model has been verified by calculating theoretical global insolation for different sites covering east,west,north,south and the central region with the measured values from the same *** model has also been validated on a region,from which data was not used during the development of the *** the model,clearness index coefficients(KT)are updated using the ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF)*** forecasting efficacies using the KT model and EnKF algorithm have also been verified by comparing two popular algorithms,namely the recursive least square(RLS)and Kalman filter(KF)*** minimum mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),mean square error(MSE)and correlation coefficient(R)value obtained in global solar insolation estimations using EnKF in one of the locations are 2.4%,0.0285 and 0.9866 respectively.

Micro-tubers are important propagules in potato breeding and potato production, and they are also dormant and easily transported and therefore good targets for mutation induction in potato mutation breeding. A prerequisite for mutation breeding is to determine optimal mutation treatments. Therefore, radio-sensitivity tests of a tetraploid and a diploid potato to gamma irradiation were undertaken. Effects of different gamma sources on radio-activity were also studied. In vitro potato cuttings were gamma irradiated using a wide dose range (0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 20 Gy). The irradiated cuttings were then cultured to induce micro-tubers directly in vitro. Micro-tuber morphotypes were assessed after irradiation of cuttings using three gamma sources with emission activities of 1.8, 7.07 and 139 Gy/min. The diploid species (Solanum verrucosum) was more radio-sensitive than the tetraploid cultivar Desirée (Solanum tuberosum). Gamma dose rates had significant influences on subsequent micro-tuber production at various mutant generations. Effects included reductions in the number, size and weight of micro-tubers produced. Gamma dose was more lethal for the diploid potato genotype and micro-tubers produced were small compared to those produced by the tetraploid genotype after irradiation. Different treatments are recommended for diploid and tetraploid potato irradiation in producing large mutant micro-tuber populations. The mutant micro-tuber populations may then be screened for interesting mutations/trait for both genetics and plant breeding purposes.

Trace Elements Assessment in Human Nails in Eastern Sudan Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

In the present work, elements concentration in fingernails samples of volunteers of different ages (males, females) were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) Perkin-Elmer, spectrophotometer. Fingernails samples of different groups were analyzed to determine the trace elements Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, Zn and Pb. Standards materials were prepared for concentration assessment that adjacent to samples from two cities in different location in eastern province of Sudan for elements concentrations finding. In addition, samples of hands fingernails and toenails were analyzed for comparison and method validation. Consequently, the significant levels of elements concentration in nails samples of Jabiat residents compared to Port Sudan resident’s area due to soil dispersion are supporting the possibility of external contamination. The data of component matrix and rotated component matrix of varimax normalization using principal component analysis revealed important predictors of nails elements Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn concentrations in soil of both areas under study. However, the Pb, Ni, Ca, and Co are possible to be indication of different sources associated with environmental contamination. The significant correlation and principal component analysis of the elements of nails concentrations in the two categories supported the probability of different expose environmental contamination.

Helicobacter pylori is the microbial agent most responsible for gastro-duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis, which can develop into carcinoma of the stomach. This study was performed in Wad Medani Teaching Hospital, Sudan to detect Helicobacter pylori in stomach samples, and evaluate the performance of the tests used, which were histological stains and PCR. Gastric biopsies were obtained from 105 referred patients during endoscopy, and fixed specimens examined by haematoxylin-eosin and Warthin-Starry silver stains, while DNA was extracted for glmM gene amplification. Epigastric pain was the most common symptom at 78% (82/105) and chronic gastritis recorded with 71% (68/105) of endoscopy results. Warthin-Starry silver stain gave 31% (33/105) as positive for Helicobacter pylori followed by glmM gene 27% (28/105) and haematoxylin-eosin 24% (25/105). The study indicated good performance of histological staining and high specificity of glmM gene in detection of Helicobacter pylori from gastric biopsies.

This work aims to screen mutant rice lines tolerant to Striga *** rainfed sensitive rice varieties B22 and F154 were *** survival rates of the two parents were significantly lower respectively(9.74a and 11.83a)than those of mutant lines(55.36c to 74.36b);Striga plants emergence/pot were significantly higher for the parents(13.96c and14.89c)compared to the mutants(0.12a to 1.5b);the infection rate of parents(7.37b;7.86b)was higher compared to the mutants(2.27a to 2.74a);fertility rate/plant of parents was lower(20.98%b;22.29%b)but much higher than mutants(72.19%b to 78.35%b);the average panicle number/plant of parents was significantly lower(0.5a;1a)than those of mutants(1.5b to 2.4bc)and the 100 g grain weight of parents are lower(2.35a;2.56a)than those of mutants(3.19b to 3.23b).The culture of those mutant lines may increase rice production and contribute to enhancing food security in Madagascar.

Salt is a major abiotic stress threatening crop plants such as rice. Tolerance to salt is complex and regulated by numerous genetic and non-genetic factors. To date most screens for salt tolerance rely on plant performance in stressed conditions. This article describes the ability to screen for salt tolerance in non-stressed conditions. The work is based on correlations between 62 rice genotypes in salt stress and non-stress conditions and measuring the intake of elements using Particle Induced X-ray Emission and X-ray Fluorescence. Roots and shoots were analysed though shoots provided easier and more robust materials to work with. Data were interpreted using multivariate statistical analysis which showed the intake ratio of elements across tolerant, moderately tolerant and susceptible rice genotypes. Tolerant genotypes exhibited a larger intake of elements, and a classification criteria based on Canonical Discriminant Analysis allowed differentiation of salt tolerant genotypes not only under salt stress but, significantly, also under non-stressed conditions. Thus, shoot element content in benign conditions can be used as an indicator for salt tolerance. These studies suggest that many salt tolerance mechanisms in rice cultivars are constitutive, they are not switched on by stress, and this has implications for physiological and genetic studies, especially in crop plants. The approach has practical application as it allows pre-screening in non-stressed conditions, from which candidate salt tolerant genotypes may be selected for subsequent testing in saline field conditions, selecting in benign conditions provides greater seed harvest of the next generation which can be used in multiple tests.

Hospitalizations for Osteoporosis-Related Fractures: Analysis from Eastern Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis causes fragility fractures which increase the morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Our objective was to look at the hospital admissions due to fragility fractures and site of fractures. Methods: This is a retrospective study of a 2-year period (2017-2018), in which we evaluated all the admissions of fragility fractures at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. A Fragility Fracture is a fracture which occurs in patients with low bone mass due to a fall from a standing height. The data were gathered from the Quadru Med patient care system for patients over the age of 50 years: sex, site of fracture, previous fractures, and treatment meted out. The hospitalization rate for fragility fractures was calculated by taking into consideration of all the adult admissions to the orthopaedic department. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the Hospital and the Imam Abdul Rahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam. Results: During the study period 187 patients with fragility fractures were admitted. The mean age was 68.55 ± 12.43 years;fracture femur was the most common with 136 (72.7%), tibia 15 (8%) and spine 14 (7.5%). At the time of discharge based on the T score of spine 50 were osteopenic and 45 were osteoporotic. Overall adult admission for the study period was 1410 patients and 13.26% were patients with fragility fractures. There were 3 (1.6%) deaths within the first 30 days in the hospital. Conclusions: Fracture femur was the most common fragility fracture seen in our study. Orthopaedic surgeons should be ready to treat all fragility fractures and treat osteoporosis appropriately so that a second fracture is prevented.
