Thin Films for Coating Nanomaterials

For nano-structured solids （those with one or more dimensions in the 1-100 nm range）, attempts of surface modification can pose significant and new challenges. In traditional materials, the surface coating could be several hundreds nanometers in thickness, or even microns and millimeters. In a nano-structured material, such as particle or nanofibers, the coating thickness has to be substantially smaller than the bulk dimensions （100 nm or less）, yet be durable and effective. In this paper, some aspects of effective nanometer scale coatings have been discussed. These films have been deposited by a non-line of sight （plasma） techniques; and therefore, they are capable of modifying nanofibers, near net shape cellular foams, and other high porosity materials. Two types of coatings will be focused upon：（a） those that make the surface inert and （b） those designed to enhance surface reactivity and bonding. The former has been achieved by forming 1-2 nm layer of --CF2- （and/or CF3） groups on the surface, and the latter by creating a nano- layer of SiO2-type compound. Nucleation and growth studies of the plasma-generated film indicate that they start forming as 2-3 nm high islands that grow laterally, and eventually completely cover the surface with 2-3 nm film. Contact angle measurements indicate that these nano-coatings are fully functional even before they have achieved complete coverage of 2-3 nm. They should therefore be applicable to nano-structural solids. This is corroborated by application of these films on vapor grown nanofibers of carbon, and on graphitic foams. Coated and uncoated materials are infiltrated with epoxy matrix to form composites and their microstructure, as well as mechanical behaviors are compared. The results show that the nano-oxide coating can significantly enhance bond formation between carbon and organic phases, thereby enhancing wettability, dispersion, and composite behavior. As the Internet of things(IoT)technology is evolving,distributed solar energy resources can be operated,monitored,and controlled *** design of an IoT based solar energy system for smart irrigation is essential for regions around the world,which face water scarcity and power ***,such a system is designed in this *** proposed system utilizes a single board system-on-a-chip controller(the controller hereafter),which has built-in WiFi connectivity,and connections to a solar cell to provide the required operating *** controller reads the field soil moisture,humidity,and temperature sensors,and outputs appropriate actuation command signals to operate irrigation *** controller also monitors the underground water level,which is essential to prevent the pump motors from burning due to the level in the water *** proposed system has three modes of operations,*** local control mode,mobile monitoring-control mode,and fuzzy logic-based control *** the purpose of the proposed system validation,a prototype was designed,built,and tested.

Clusters of Moderate Size Earthquakes along Main Central Thrust (MCT) in Himalaya

The Main Central Thrust (MCT) in Himalaya is seismically active in segments. In recent times, strain release within these active segments produce five spatial clusters (A to E;Figure 1). The seismicity within the cluster zones occurs in two depth bands;corresponding to the base of upper and lower crust. Depth sections across the clusters illustrate gently dipping subducted Indian Plate, overriding Tibetan Plate and compressed Sedimentary Wedge in between, with mid crustal ramping of MCT. Several presumptions / hypotheses have been put forward to decipher the causes of clustering along MCT. These are segmental activation of MCT, cross fault interactions, zones of arc parallel and arc perpendicular compressions, pore pressure perturbations, low heat flow zones etc. But these hypotheses need to be evaluated in the future after more ground level data are available. The maximum size of seismic threat that MCT can produce is inferred to be around Mw 7.0 in those clusters.

In the present work,free vibration and buckling analyses of sandwich plates with various functionally graded foam cores are carried *** cores are assumed to be made of metal,and three different configurations of the porous distribution in the core layer are taken into *** carry out a comparative study between the distributions of pores in the core foam,the mass of foam in all three cases is kept the *** vibration and buckling behaviors of skew plates are also analyzed as a part of the current *** principle of minimization of potential energy and Hamilton’s principle are used for the derivation of the governing equations,while a C-0 finite element-based higher-order zigzag formulation is developed to solve the free vibration and buckling *** influences of gradation laws,boundary conditions,skew angle and geometry of plates are studied in detail for the dynamic and stability *** is found that both the non-dimensional natural frequency and buckling load decrease with the increase in the thickness of the metal foam cores,while they show an increasing trend as the skew angle of the plate increases.

Purification of full-length human Pregnane and Xenobiotic Receptor:polyclonal antibody preparation for immunological characterization

Pregnane and Xenobiotic Receptor (PXR; or Steroid and Xenobiotic Receptor, SXR), a new member of the nuclear receptor superfamily, is thought to modulate a network of genes that are involved in xenobiotic metabolism and elimination. To further explore the role of PXR in body’s homeostatic mechanisms, we for the first time, report successful prokary- otic expression and purification of full-length PXR and preparation of polyclonal antibody against the whole protein. The full-length cDNA encoding a 434 amino acids protein was sub-cloned into prokaryotic expression vector, pET-30b and transformed into E. coli BL21(DE3) cells for efficient over expression. The inclusion body fraction, containing the expressed recombinant protein, was purified first by solubilizing in sarcosine extraction buffer and then by affinity column chromatography using Ni-NTA His-Bind matrix. The efficacy of anti-PXR antibody was confirmed by immunocytology, Western blot analysis, EMSA and immunohistochemistry. The antibody obtained was capable of detecting human and mouse PXR with high specificity and sensitivity. Immunofluorescence staining of COS-1 cells transfected with human or mouse PXR showed a clear nuclear localization. Results from immunohistochemistry showed that level of PXR in liver sections is immunologically detectable in the nuclei. Similar to exogenously transfected PXR, Western blot analysis of cell extract from HepG2 and COLO320DM cells revealed a major protein band for endogenous PXR having the expected molecular weight of 50 kDa. Relevance of other immunodetectable bands with reference to PXR isoforms and current testimony are evaluated. Advantages of antibody raised against full-length PXR protein for functional characterization of receptor is discussed and its application for clinical purposes is envisaged.

Non-observable Influential（s） in the Domain of Consciousness

There are non-observable factors, which influence behavior of a living system at the observable level. If science has to be expanded beyond Planck"s scale of measurement, then these non-observable influential(s) are required to be conceptually defined, localized and described. Their operational mechanism is to be explored. This paper precisely does this by identifying those influential non-observables as consciousness, mind, self, life-principle, and information. Information, in fact, remains the connecting link at the interface between non-observables and observables. When these non-observable influential(s) could be given a place in the algorithms of science, several research questions and hypothesis could be generated leading to an environment for fruitful consciousness research.

On Some Essential Requirements for a Fruitful Consciousness Research

Absence of input of new ideas and paucity of relevant assumption, research question and hypothesis are the reasons why consciousness has not yet found its place in any of the algorithms of science. By weaving several novel ideas in series, in parallel and at multiple levels overarching several disciplines, a distinct roadmap has been drawn for a dispassionate consciousness research. Several workable propositions in the paper, interdisciplinary in its true sense, might lead to opening of multiple new doors of science.
