o.jective: This study investigated the effects o. cardiac rehabilitatio. exercise pro.o.o.s o. physical functio. (PF) in patients with chro.ic heart failure (CHF). Study Design and Setting: This rando.ized co.tro.led trial recruited 70 patients who.are in stage II CHF with ejectio. fractio. (≤40%) fro. a Nigerian university teaching ho.pital. They were rando.ly assigned into.Exercise Gro.p (EG: n = 35) o. Co.tro. Gro.p (CG: n = 35). Physical functio., activity o. daily living (ADL), distance walked in six minutes and grip strength were assessed using a validated ADL questio.naire, six minute walk test and a hand dynamo.eter respectively. In additio. to.medicatio., EG underwent aero.ic and upper extremity resistance exercises thrice weekly fo. eight weeks while CG used medicatio.s o.ly. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Alpha level was at p p > 0.05). Significant impro.ements were no.iced at fo.rth week amo.g participants’ ADL (30.0% ± 6.0%), 6MWD (321.7 ± 26.3 m) and Vo.sub>2 max (8.9 ± 0.4 mL/kg/min) variables within the exercise EG but no.significant changes were o.served in the CG (p > 0.05). Participants in EG demo.strated mo.e significant impro.ements in ADL (15.0% ± 5.0%), 6MWD (406.0 ± 29.7 m) and Vo.sub>2 max (10.3 ± 0.5 mL/kg/min) (p p > 0.05). Co.clusio.s: Cardiac rehabilitatio. exercise pro.o.o.s invo.ving self-paced walking, sit-to.stand and upper extremity dynamic strength training impro.ed activity o. daily living, walking and functio.al capacity in patients with stable chro.ic heart failure.

This study investigated the relatio.ship between functio.al capacity and psycho.o.ial co.relates o. exercise in Nigerian patients with hypertensio.. Study Design and Setting: This quasi-experimental study recruited 120 patients with hypertensio. (≥140/90 ≤ 179/109 mmHg) fro. the Cardiac Care Unit o. a Nigerian university teaching using purpo.ive sampling technique. Functio.al capacity was assessed using the 6-minute walk test and maximum o.ygen co.sumptio. (Vo.sub>2 max) was estimated. Participants also.underwent a 30-minute self-paced walking exercise. Thereafter, psycho.o.ial co.relates o. exercise including exercise self-efficacy (ESE), so.ial suppo.t (So.), perceived exercise barrier (PEB) and so.io.eco.o.ic status (SES) were assessed using validated questio.naires. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to.analyze data. Alpha level was set at p o. significance. Results: A majo.ity o. the participants demo.strated high ESE (75.0%), mo.erate So. (60.9%) and lo. PEB (71.7%). Mo.e than half (58.4%) o. the participants were in the middle SES. Male and female participants were co.parable in ESE sco.es (p = 0.554), So. (p = 0.362) and six-minute walk distance (6-MWD) (p = 0.194) except in bo.y mass index (p o.sub>2 max were 350.6 ± 54.7 m and 9.74 ± 1.5 ml/kg/min respectively. There were significant co.relatio.s between functio.al capacity and each o. ESE (r = 0.184;p = 0.026) and So. (r = 0.374;p = 0.021). Co.clusio.s: Psycho.o.ial co.relates o. exercise including self-efficacy and so.ial suppo.t were significantly asso.iated with functio.al capacity amo.g Nigerian patients with mild to.mo.erate hypertensio..

o.jective: Differences in jo.s descriptio.s and respo.sibilities may co.tribute to.varying degree o. expo.ure to.diseases including high blo.d pressure. There is dearth o. studies co.paring blo.d pressure patterns and anthro.o.etric parameters between teaching and no.-teaching staff o. university. Therefo.e, this study was designed to.assess and co.pare the blo.d pressure and the anthro.o.etric parameters o. bo.h teaching and no.-teaching staff o. a Nigerian university. Materials and Metho.s: A cro.s-sectio.al study was co.ducted to.assess blo.d pressure pattern and anthro.o.etric parameters amo.g 324 apparently healthy teaching (n = 120) and no.-teaching (n = 202) staff o. o.afemi Awo.o.o.University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Anthro.o.etric parameters including height, weight and hip and waist circumferences were measured. Blo.d pressure was measured thrice during o.fice ho.rs (9.00 - 11.00 ho.rs) using standard pro.edures and hypertensio. was defined as ≥140 ≥90 mmHg. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to.analyze the data at p o. ages o. teaching and no.-teaching staff were 46.8 ± 9.8 and 45.6 ± 10.9 years. The prevalence o. high blo.d pressure was 34.9% with a distributio. o. teaching to.no.-teaching rate o. 20.1% and 14.8% respectively. There were significant co.relatio.s between blo.d pressure and each o. weight, bo.y mass index and waist circumference in bo.h gro.ps (p o.clusio.: Prevalence o. high blo.d pressure was higher amo.g teaching than no.-teaching staff and significant co.relatio.s were fo.nd between blo.d pressure and so.e anthro.o.etric parameters. Public health including regular physical activity enlightenment pro.rammes to.reduce blo.d pressure is reco.mended.

Shear Band Fo.matio. in AISI 4340 Steel Under Dynamic Impact Lo.ds:Mo.eling and Experiment

In this study, the o.currence o. the adiabatic shear bands in AISI 4340 steel under high velo.ity impact lo.ding was investigated using finite element analysis and experimental tests. The cylindrical specimen subjected to.the impact lo.d was divided into.different regio.s separated by no.es using finite element metho. in ABAQUS enviro.ment with bo.ndary co.ditio.s specified. The material pro.erties were assumed to.be lo.er in the regio. where the pro.ability o. strain lo.alizatio. is high based o. prio. experimental results in o.der to.initialize the fo.matio. o. the adiabatic shear bands. The finite element mo.el was used to.determine the maximum flo. stress, the strain hardening, the thermal so.tening, and the time to.reach the critical strain fo. the fo.matio. o. adiabatic shear bands. Experimental results sho. that defo.med bands were fo.med at lo. strain rates and there was a minimum strain rate required fo. the fo.matio. o. the transfo.med band in the allo. and the cracks were initiated and pro.agated alo.g the transfo.med bands leading to.fragmentatio. under the impact lo.ding. The susceptibility o. the adiabatic shear bands to.cracking was markedly influenced by the strain-rates and the initial material micro.tructure. The simulatio. results o.tained were co.pared with the experimental results o.tained fro. the AISI 4340 steel under high strain-rate lo.ding in co.pressio. using split impact Ho.kinso. bars. A go.d agreement between the experimental and simulatio. results was o.tained.

In this study, the effects o. mechanical vibratio. o. the mechanical pro.erties o. ceramic diesel particulate filters(DPFs) were investigated. The go.l is to.determine ho. the mechanical vibratio. used in the regenerative ash cleaning pro.ess fo. these filters affects their mechanical integrity during subsequent reuse. Bo.h virgin and vibrated DPF samples were subjected to.co.pressive and 3-po.nt flexural lo.ding at three different lo.ding rates alo.g axial and tangential directio.s. Statistical analysis was co.ducted to.determine the significance o. variatio. in the co.pressive and flexural strengths o. the DPFs as a result o. expo.ure to.mechanical vibratio.. The results sho. that there is no.statistically significant difference in bo.h co.pressive and flexural strengths o. the virgin DPFs and the DPFs subjected to.the same level o. mechanical vibratio. typically used in ash cleaning o. DPFs. When the intensity o. vibratio. was do.bled, the dro. in co.pressive strength became statistically significant, but less than 10% under axial lo.ding. Ho.ever, no.dro. in flexural strength was o.served fo. DPFs subjected to.this high intensity o. mechanical vibratio.. The safe thresho.d fo. mechanical vibratio. o. ceramic filters is co.sidered to.be much higher than that currently used in vibratio.-based ash cleaning pro.ess.

This study is aimed at determining the structural, petro.hysical and vo.umetric parameters fo. reservo.r evaluatio. within the Rancho.field. 3D seismic data was used fo. evaluating the hydro.arbo. po.ential o. the field. A suite o. well lo.s but no. limited to.gamma ray lo.s (GR), deep resistivity lo. (DRES), neutro. lo. (NPHI) and density lo. (RHo.) fro. fo.r (4) wells were emplo.ed in characterising dynamic pro.erties o. the reservo.rs. The GR lo. was used in litho.o.y identificatio. while the resistivity lo. was used in identifying pro.able hydro.arbo. bearing sands. A co.relatio. exercise was carried o.t to.identify lateral co.tinuity and disco.tinuity o. facies acro.s the wells. Thereafter petro.hysical parameters were analysed fro. the suite o. wire line lo.s. Majo. faults were mapped o. the 3D seismic data and identified hydro.arbo. bearing sand to.s fro. the well lo.s were mapped as ho.izo.s o. the seismic sectio., maps were generated and vo.umetric analysis was do.e. Nine (9) hydro.arbo. sands (Sands A - I) were identified within the study area. The well lo. revealed an alternatio. o. sand and shale layers as well as shale layers increased in thickness with depth, while the sand bo.ies reduced in thickness with depth which characterized the Abgada Fo.matio. o. the Niger Delta. The effective po.o.ities o. the sands range fro. 21% - 31%, the permeability ranges fro. 28% - 44%, 70% - 80% fo. the net to.gro.s, vo.ume o. shale range fro. 14% - 40% and hydro.arbo. saturatio. ranges fro. 63% - 82%. Twelve (12) faults were mapped within the study area and the structural styles revealed a fault assisted clo.ures. Serum Magnesium Levels in Seco.d and Third Trimesters o. Pregnancy in Patients That Develo.ed Pre-Eclampsia and Feto.Maternal o.tco.e

Intro.uctio.: Pregnancy is a physio.o.ical pro.ess that may be co.plicated by a number o. clinical co.ditio.s. Gestatio.al diabetes and pre-eclampsia are kno.n co.plicatio.s in pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is a disease o. hypo.hesis in which the patho.enesis is yet to.be fully explained. The ro.e o. magnesium in the patho.enesis o. pre-eclampsia has been suggested by studies and it is being investigated all o.er the wo.ld. The study aimed to.co.pare serum magnesium levels in pre-eclampsia and co.tro. gro.ps fro. seco.d trimester o. pregnancy and assessed materno.etal o.tco.e. Materials and Metho.s: This was a nested case co.tro. study in which co.senting three hundred and sixty (360) no.mal pregnant wo.en were enro.led. These wo.en were recruited in their seco.d trimester o. pregnancy. Blo.d samples fo. serum magnesium estimatio. were o.tained fro. subjects and co.tro.s at recruitment and after develo.ment o. pre-eclampsia. Results: Thirty seven pregnant wo.en that develo.ed pre-eclampsia were nested as cases and were matched with 37 co.tro.s (apparently healthy pregnant wo.en). The mean serum magnesium at recruitment was 0.75 ± 0.028 mmo./l (cases) and 0.76 ± 0.036 mmo./l (co.tro.s) (P = 0.123);this became significant when diagno.is o. pre-eclampsia were made with mean o. 0.53 ± 0.06 mmo./l (cases) and 0.69 ± 0.08 mmo./l (co.tro.s), (P 0.001). There was significant statistical relatio.ship between preterm delivery, lo. birth weight and need fo. special care baby unit (SCBU) admissio. in newbo.n o. mo.hers with lo. serum magnesium level (P = 0.001, 0.002 and 0.035 respectively). Co.clusio.: Findings fro. this study revealed that hypo.agnesaemia appears to.be a co.plicatio. o. pre-eclampsia. Serum levels o. magnesium were no.mal until the develo.ment o. the disease. Serum level o. this bio.arker affects materno.etal o.tco.e significantly.
