radionuclides measurements and mineralogical studies on beach sands, East Rosetta Estuary, Egypt

radiometric measurements were carried out for the beach sands from East Rosetta estuary to determine the activity concentrations of 238 U, 226 ra, 232 Th, and 40 K, using a Hyper Pure Germanium spectrometer, to estimate the dose rates and radiation hazard indices. The average specific activities are 778.20 Bq/kg for 238 U; 646.89 Bq/kg for 226 ra; 621.92 and 627.85 Bq/kg for the 222 Rn daughters 214 Pb and 214 Bi respectively. The average specific activity of 232 Th is 1510.25 Bq/kg, while the calculated specific activity for 40 K has an average of 8.41 Bq/kg. The average specific activity of 235 U is 38.61 Bq/kg. The average absorbed dose rate is 1211.36 nGy/h, 20 times higher than the estimated average global primordial radiation of 60 nGy/h and 6 times higher than that of the world range (10-200 nGy/h). The radium equivalent (ra eq ) values are from 6 to 9 times the recommended value. The internal and external hazard indices (H int , H ex ) indicate that their values are from 6 to 11 times the permissible values of these indices. These higher values may be due to the presence of economic heavy minerals containing radionuclides as zircon and monazite as well as some trace minerals, thorite and uranothorite. The mineralogical study indicates the beach sands contain heavy minerals, zircon, monazite, rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, magnetite and garnet. The average abundance of zircon is 0.175 wt% ranging from 0.125 wt% to 0.239 wt%, while it is 0.004wt% ranging from 0.001 wt% to 0.007 wt% for monazite. The average abundance is 0.087 wt% for rutile; 2.029 wt% for ilmenite; 1.084 wt% for magnetite; 0.384 wt% for leucoxene and 0.295 wt% for garnet.

The protective effects of procyanidin C-1 on bisphenol A-induced testicular dysfunction in aged mice

The number and quality of sperm are decreased due to bisphenol A(BPA) exposure, an endocrine-disrupting chemical on the male reproductive system, especially in advanced paternal age(APA). Procyanidin C-1(PCY-1), an antioxidant from grape seed(Vitis vinifera L.), has demonstrated anti-viral, anti-melanogenic and immunostimulatory effects. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of PCY-1 intervention on sperm parameters, testis morphological changes, serum testosterone, oestradiol, and luteinizing hormone(LH) concentrations and the expression of apoptotic(Bax and Bcl-2) and mitochondria-related(Mfn1 and Opa1) genes in BPA-exposed aged mice. Results revealed that PCY-1 intervention improves aged male fertility in BPA-exposed conditions by decreasing abnormal sperms percentage and increasing spermatogenic cell diameter and epithelial height. PCY-1 also decreased oestradiol, and increased LH and testosterone levels. The gene expression of Bax was significantly down-regulated by PCY-1 intervention. in contrast, Bcl-2 was substantially up-regulated. Expression of Mfn1 and Opa1 genes were also significantly up-regulated in the PCY intervention group. Hence, it is demonstrated that PCY-1 was able to mitigate the adverse effects of BPA on reproductive parameters of aged mice. Collectively, we postulated that PCY-1 has a potential role in protecting the ageing male reproductive system against the damaging impacts of BPA.

The aim of this study is to determine the transfer factor soil-to-plant and to assess the concentration level of natural and artificial radionuclide (238U, 226ra, 228ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs) in samples from Saluga and Ghazal Protectorate area in Aswan, Egypt, by using High Pure Germanium detector (HPGe) Environmental radioactivity Measurements Labrotary in faculty of science Qena. Reported values for natural radionuclides ranged from 8.81 ± 0.64 to 28.88 ± 2.10, from 6.98 ± 0.51 to 26.01 ± 1.89, from 12.29 ± 0.89 to 33.32 ± 2.43, from 12.53 ± 0.91 to 32.81 ± 2.39 and from 383.90 ± 27.95 to 711.98 ± 51.83 ***-1 for 238U, 226ra, 228ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. 137Cs activity concentration was found to be in the range from 0.36 ± 0.03 to 9.73 ± 0.71 ***-1 and was calculated through transfer factor TF reported in this article.

Natural radioactivity levels and radiation hazards for gypsum materials used in Egypt

radionuclides naturally occurring in building materials may significantly contribute to the annual doses to the public. For instance, familiar building materials such as the concrete and gypsum board have been reported to produce a dose of about 0.04 mSv per year for a typical person (NCRP 1987c). External as well as internal exposures are two pathways of radiation dose imparted to human beings from the building materials. As information on the radioactivity of such materials is lacking, the study of gypsum materials used in Egypt was carried out in order to estimate the annual dose to the Egyptian population due to natural radionuclides in building materials. During the study, 18 samples of commonly used gypsum raw materials were collected and measured. The activity concentrations were determined by gamma ray spectrometry. Their mean values were in the ranges of 499.29 ± 11.53 Bq·kg-1 for 40K, 91.97 ± 2.61 Bq·kg-1 for 226ra, 37.62 ± 1.67 Bq·kg-1 for 238U and 42.27 ± 2.22 Bq·kg-1 for 232Th. The activity indexed iγ for 18, different gypsum samples varied from 0.31 ± 0.03 to 2.3 ± 0.19 and the radium equivalent activity (raeq), from 38.81 ± 1.68 to 324.7 ± 9.42. These values are lower than the limit of 370 Bq·kg-1 adopted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The average indoor annual effective gamma dose rate (DE) in (mSv/y) for the people, caused by the building materials of dwellings, was assessed for most commonly gypsum materials. it was estimated to be in the range from 0.10 ± 0.003 mSv/y to 0.74 ± 0.08 mSv/y. The internal and external hazard indices (Hin, Hex) and the absorbed dose rate in air D in each sample were evaluated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in dwelling made of the studied materials. The absorbed dose rate of indoor air in samples G1, G2, G11, G17 and G18 is less than the international recommended value which is 55 nGyh-1. Application of in-house method for determinationof radium isotopes in environmental samples usingthe Liquid Scintillation counting technique

A method for determination of 226ra.a.d 228ra in environmental samples using the α-β coincidence liquid scintillation counting (LSC) has been developed. radium were preconcentrated from environmental samples by coprecipitation with BaSO4, then purified from others radionuclide interferences using the cation column exchange (Bio-rad AG 50 W-X4 resin with 200-400 mesh size and H+ form) and operating in warm temperature which is between 70-80oC. Then, the Ba(ra)SO4 precipitate was filtered through the Millipore filter paper, dried and weighed to calculate chemical yield. The activity concentration of radium isotopes in mixture of liquid scintillation cocktails were measured using LSC after being stored for over 21 days to allow the growth of the progeny nuclides. The method has been validated with a certi-fied reference material supplied by the international Atomic Energy Agency and reliable results were obtained. The radiochemical yields for radium were 59% - 90% and recovery was 97% and 80% for 226ra.a.d 228ra, respectively. Sixteen seawater and fish flesh samples collected in Kapar coastal water have been analyzed with the developed method. The obtained radium activity concentrations in seawater were in the range of 02.08 ± 0.82 mBq/L to 3.69 ± 1.29 mBq/L for 226ra.a.d 6.01 ± 3.05 mBq/L to 17.07 ± 6.62 mBq/L for 228ra. Meanwhile, the activity concentrations of 226ra.a.d 228ra in fish flesh were in the range of 11.82 ± 5.23 – 16.53 ± 6.53 Bq/kg dry wt. and 43.52 ± 16.34 – 53.57 ± 19.86 Bq/kg dry wt., respectively.

Effect of radioactive Minerals Potentiality and Primordial Nuclei Distribution on radiation Exposure Levels within Muscovite Granite, Wadi Nugrus, Southeastern Desert, Egypt

The studied area at Wadi Nugrus, Southeastern Desert, Egypt, is located between lat. 24°41'00'' and 24°41'35''N and long. 34°36'47'' and 34°37'09''E. The rock types are represented by layered metagabbros, biotite schists, gneisses, granodiorites, and Muscovite granites. The muscovite granite of Wadi Nugrus, is small exposure in size (~5.0 km2), emplaced along NW-SE trend, with about 0.5 - 4.5 Km in length and 100 - 250 m in width and intruding the biotite schists. The studied muscovite granite is composed mainly of plagioclases, potash feldspars, quartz, biotite and muscovite. The recorded minerals assemblage can be classified into secondary U-minerals (uranophane and meta-autunite), U-bearing minerals (uranothorite and columbite) and accessory minerals (zircon, flourite, allanite, zinnwaldite and hematite). The U/eU is more unity where, the measured chemical uranium is higher than the measured equivalent uranium in the most analyzed samples especially in trenches, which reflect disequilibrium state. The activity concentrations range from 251.72 to 1096.2 Bq·kg-1 for 232Th, from 494 to 2593.5 Bq·kg-1 for 226ra, and from 1314.6 to 1846.7 Bq·kg-1 for 40K. The obtained radiological data show that the average internal and external hazard indices are 9.11 and 5.78, respectively which are more than unity and highly exceeding the permissible limits (international Commission on radiation Protection, iCRP). The internal and external hazards are mainly due to 226ra nuclei while the absorbed dose rate (nGy/h) is related to 232Th nuclei. The contributions of the three nuclei in the total absorbed dose rates and internal and external hazardous, for 226ra, it contributes by 72% in Hin, 57% in Hex and 55% of DR, for 232Th it contributes by 24% in Hin, 37% in Hex and 36.9% of DR, while f

Natural radioactivity and the resulting radiation doses in some kinds of commercially marble collected from different quarries and factories in Egypt

Fourteen samples of marble were collected from different factories in Egypt. The samples were crushed, dried in controlled furnace for around twenty four hours, and then stored for five weeks in plastic Marinelli beakers. Concentrations and the U- and Th-bearing minerals were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS).The gamma radiation of the samples was measured, employing high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy with an accumulating time for about 80000 sec. each. From the measured γ -ray spectra, activity concentrations were determined for marble samples 226ra (37. 6 ± 1.7 - 100.54 ± 3.2 Bq/kg), 232Th (3.57 ± 0.64 - 9.37 ± 1.80 Bq/kg) and 40K (30.68 ± 1.1 – 1196 ± 4.9 Bq/kg). The absorbed dose rates, annual effective dose rates, radium equivalent activities as well as the radiation hazard indices were estimated. The radium equivalent activities (raeq) are lower than the limit of 370 Bq kg?1 set by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (Exposure to radiation from the natural radioactivity in building materials. Report by a Group of Experts of the OECD, Nuclear Energy Agency, OECD, Paris, 1979) [1]. All obtained results referred to the fact that all the concentrations were within the allowed limits to domestic use. Comparing the results in this work with those published by international Atomic Energy Agency and local and universal researches, it was found that these concentrations were within the allowed limits for agricultural and domestic uses.

Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Study

Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a high grade neuroendocrine tumor, and has aggressive nature, so the majority of cases are presented with extensive disease. SCLC was staged into 2 categories: limited-stage disease (LS-SCLC) and extensive disease (ES-SCLC). Despite SCLC is sensitive to ra-diotherapy and chemotherapy, SCLC has high tendency for rapid dissemina-tion to regional and distant sites. Median survival time ranged from 2 - 4 months in patients with untreated SCLC. Multiagent chemotherapy was the primary treatment for SCLC. Aim of the work: This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate and analyze clinical features, treatment outcome, sur-vival and prognostic factors affecting survival in patients with SCLC presented to Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine department, Chest department and Medical oncology unit in Mansoura Oncology Centre during the period from 2000-2015. Methods: data of patients were collected from their files. The information obtained included demographic features, treatment received;its toxicity and outcome, survival and its prognostic factors. Demographic data were: age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG-PS), smoking status, stage of disease. data also included disease presentation and metastatic sites. Several factors affecting survival were analysed as age, sex, stage, PS, smoking status and LDH. Results: Sixty-three patients were enrolled in this study. Median age was 56.2 ± 6. Strong male predominance (92.1%) was observed;84.1% of them were smoker. Thirty six patients (57.2%) were of ECOG-PS of 0 - 1. ES-SCLC was reported in 65% of cases and LDH was high (>1.5 xN) in 47.6%. The most common symptom was chest pain (38.1%) followed by cough (31.8%), weight loss (30%). Fifteen patients had single metastatic site (23.8%) and bone was the most common site of metastasis (reported in 8 patients) followed by brain, lung and liver. 2-year overall survival rate was 35% with median survival time of 14

The Sa'al Metamorphic Complex(SMC;southern Sinai)encompasses the oldest arc rocks in the Arabian–Nubian Shield,comprising two non-consanguineous metavolcanic successions(the Agramiya Group and the Post-ra.a.an Formation)separated by the metasediments of the ra.a.an *** experienced three distinct deformational events(D_(1)–D_(3))and two low-medium grade regional metamorphic events(M_1–M_(2)).The Agramiya Group and the ra.a.an Formation experienced all tectonometamorphic events(D_1–D_(3)and M_(1)–M_(2)),whereas the Post-ra.a.an volcanic rocks were only affected by the D_(3)and M_(2)events.D_(1)is an extensional event and is connected to the late Rodinia break-up(~Tonian;900–870 Ma).The M_(1)metamorphism variably affected the older Agramiya Group,the rhyolitic tuffs experiencing lower to upper greenschist facies conditions and the basic and intermediate volcanic rocks undergoing amphibolite facies *** ra.a.an Formation metasediments experienced upper greenschist to amphibolite facies *** upper greenschist facies M_(2)affected the youngest Post-ra.a.an volcanic rocks and other stratigraphic *** compressive D_(2)and D_(3)events were coeval with the accretion of dismembered terranes in the assembly of Gondwana.D_(2)can be linked to the Tonian–Cryogenian arc-arc assembly(~880–760 Ma;in Elat and Sinai),whereas D_(3)and the accompanying M_(2)is constrained to 622–600 Ma(Ediacaran).

This study was undertaken to evaluate the risks and preg-nancy outcome in women with prosthetic heart valves on different anticoagulent regimens.A retrospective chart re-view of 82pregnancies in 33women wit h mecha.ical valve prostheses at a tertiary referral ce nter from 1987to *** main outcome measures were majormaternal complica-tions and perinatal *** valve replaced was mitral(60.6%),aortic(18.2%),and both(21.2%).Fifty -four pregnancies(65.9%)resulted in live births,9(11.0%)had stillbirths(all on warfarin),and 12(14.6%)had spontaneous and 7(8.5%)therapeutic abortions(all on warfarin).The rate of spontaneous abor-tion was highest in women on warfarin throughout preg-nancy(Pive birth rate was higher in wom en on heparin compared with those on warfarin(Pin those on heparin /warfarin com pared with warfarin alone(Pients had mitral valve throm bosis(2on heparin and 1on warfarin)necessitating surgery in 1patient a nd medical thrombolysis in *** compli-cations occurred in 5patients,4of whom required *** single anticoagulant regimen confers completeprotection from thromboembolic phenomena in *** a high maternal morbidity ra te,the perinatal out-come is acceptable when pregnancy pr ogresses beyond the first trimester.
