Effect of degree of saturation on stresses and pore water pressure in the subgrade layer caused by railway track loading

Purpose-The experiments of this study investigated the effect of the subgrade degree of saturation on the value of the stresses generated on the surface and the middle(vertical and lateral stresses).The objectives of this study can be identified by studying the effect of subgrade layer degree of saturation variation,load amplitude and load frequency on the transmitted stresses through the ballast layer to the subgrade layer and the stress distribution inside it and investigating the excess pore water pressure development in the clay layer in the case of a fully saturated subgrade layer and the change in matric suction in the case of an unsaturated subgrade ***/methodology/approach-Thirty-six laboratory experiments were conducted using approximately half-scale replicas of real railways,with an iron box measuring 1.5×1.031.0 *** the box,a 0.5 m thick layer of clay soil representing the base layer was *** it is a 0.2 m thick ballast layer made of crushed stone,and on top of that is a 0.8 m long rail line supported by three 0.9 m(0.1×0.1 m)slipper *** subgrade layer has been built at the following various saturation levels:100,80,70 and 60%.Experiments were conducted with various frequencies of 1,2 and 4 Hz with load amplitudes of 15,25 and 35 ***-The results of the study demonstrated that as the subgrade degree of saturation decreased from 100 to 60%,the ratio of stress in the lateral direction to stress in the vertical direction generated in the middle of the subgrade layer decreased as *** average,this ratio changed from approximately 0.75 to approximately ***/value-The study discovered that as the test proceeded and the number of cycles increased,the value of negative water pressure(matric suction)in the case of unsaturated subgrade soils *** frequency of loads had no bearing on the ratio of decline in matric suction values,which was greater under a larger load amplitude than a lower *** the test progr

A Typical Case of Classic Potter’s syndrome: A Case Report

Potter syndrome is a rare congenital malformation that primarily affects male fetuses;it is characterized by pulmonary hypoplasia, skeletal malformation, and kidney abnormalities. The pressure of the uterine wall due to oligohydramnios leads to an unusual facial appearance, abnormal limbs in abnormal positions, or contractures. The fetus generally dies soon after birth due to respiratory insufficiency. The baby was a live preterm male, born to a 30-year-old multigravida, out of a non-consanguineous marriage via cesarean section. There was no liquor at the time of delivery. The baby did not cry immediately after birth and required resuscitation, followed by mechanical ventilation. Multiple congenital anomalies suggestive of Potter’s syndrome were noted including facial features, flattened nose, low protruding ear, retrognathism, and epicanthal folds with unilateral atresia of the choana. Chest X-ray showed small volume lung fields suggestive of pulmonary hypoplasia, and we had on ultrasonography bilateral polycystic kidney disease on ultrasonography. At 42 hours of life, the baby developed tachypnea and severe chest retractions and died due to respiratory insufficiency. Our case highlights the importance of regular prenatal checks and examinations in each pregnancy, which helps to collect suspected cases and improve knowledge of this syndrome for better management.

当前建筑抗震设计中往往忽略了地下室层及土-结构相互作用（soil-structure interaction，简称ssI）效应的影响，研究旨在通过振动台试验和数值模拟，研究考虑ssI效应时不同地下室层数的高层建筑在不同地震作用下的地震反应。首先选择相似系数λ（λ = 1:50）进行缩尺模型的振动台试验，以模拟真实建筑的地震反应。为了模拟复杂的结构系统，利用PLAXIs 3D对有无ssI效应的缩尺模型和真实模型分别进行了数值模拟。试验和数值模拟的结果取得了很好的精确度并具有良好的一致性，同时也验证了所选相似系数λ = 1:50足以反映不同地震作用下建筑的真实情况。通过对试验和数值模拟的结果进行分析，发现ssI效应和地下室对高层建筑的地震反应的影响显著。虽然目前大多数规范都认为ssI效应会减小建筑的剪力，增加侧向位移，但研究发现，在某些情况下ssI效应会增加建筑的剪力和侧向位移。

Malaria is highly prevalent in Nigeria and accounts for approximately 40%of global malaria ***,most reports on severe malaria in Nigeria are from hospital-based studies without accurate information from communities;thus,malaria-related deaths in the community are left *** study aimed to describe the prevalence and pattern of severe malaria in a community in Northwestern Nigeria.A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2–10-year-old children in sokoto,in August and December 2016,to determine the endemicity of malaria based on Plasmodium falciparum prevalence rate(PfPR2-10)and to describe the disease *** malaria was diagnosed according to the World Health Organisation *** were described using stata version *** prevalence of non-anaemia severe malaria was higher than expected(2.6%),considering the endemicity pattern which was mesoendemic based on a PfPR2-10 of 34.8%.The mean age of children with severe malaria was 3.73 years,and the male—female ratio was 2:***,54.0%of the patients had hyperparasitaemia.A relatively high prevalence of non-anaemia severe malaria was found in *** finding suggests the need to identify and treat cases in the community using modifications of current strategies,particularly seasonal malaria chemoprophylaxis.

Choanal atresia (CA) is a rare occlusion of the posterior choanae. Unilateral cases have been reported more than bilaterally, and it’s more often right-sided in those patients. According to the literature, mixed bony-membranous atresia is the most common type. There is a high incidence of craniofacial and visceral anomalies associated with congenital choanal atresia. Therefore, investigation for associated congenital anomalies is an important step before the surgery. We report 2 cases of incidental finding of unilateral choanal atresia in a 21- and 17-year-old with nasal discharge being the only complaint in the former and nasal obstruction with headache in the latter. The patients were then scheduled for day-surgery as a case of choanal atresia for transnasal, endoscopic repair and posterior septectomy. The patients were discharged home on the same day with the absence of restenosis or other complications.

Dunbar syndrome and Hypoxic Hepatitis: An Unusual Presentation

Hypoxic hepatitis, also known as ischemic hepatitis, is characterized by acute hepatocellular injury due to inadequate oxygen delivery to the liver. Celiac trunk stenosis can lead to hepatic ischemia and subsequent liver damage. We present the case of an 81-year-old patient with a history of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, hypothyroidism, and biliary lithiasis, who developed hypoxic hepatitis secondary to Dunbar syndrome and a stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery. The patient improved symptoms and liver function tests with conservative management, including intravenous fluids and supportive care. Long-term management involved continued antiplatelet therapy and statins, with consideration of further interventions for celiac trunk stenosis. This case underscores the importance of recognizing Dunbar syndrome as well as superior mesentery trunk stenosis as a potential cause of hypoxic hepatitis. It highlights the need for multidisciplinary management in such cases.
