Regolith thickness modeling using a GIS approach for landslide distribution analysis, NW Himalayas

Regolith thickness is considered as a contributing factor for the occurrence of ***, mostly it is ignored because of complex nature and as it requires more time and resources for investigation. This study aimed to appraise the role of regolith thickness on landslide distribution in the Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas, NW *** this purpose regolith thickness samples were evenly collected from all the lithological units at representative sites within different slope and elevation classes in the field. Topographic attributes(slope, aspect, drainage, Topographic Wetness Index,elevation and curvature) were derived from the Digital Elevation Model(DEM)(12.5 m resolution).Arc GIS Model Builder was used to develop the regolith thickness model. Stepwise regression technique was used to explore the spatial variation of regolith thickness using topographic attributes and lithological units. The derived model explains about 88% regolith thickness variation. The model was validated and shows good agreement(70%) between observed and predicted values. Subsequently, the derived regolith model was used to understand the relationship between regolith thickness and landslide distribution. The analysis shows that most of the landslides were located within 1-5 m regolith thickness. However, landslide concentration is highest within 5-10 m regolith thickness, which shows that regolith thickness played a significant role for the occurrence of landslide in the studied area.

Investigations on thin-film flow play a vital role in the field of optoelectronics and magnetic *** films are reasonably hard and thermally stable but quite *** thermal stability of a thin film can be further improved by incorporating the effects of *** the current work,a stretchable surface is considered upon which hybrid nanofluid thin-film flow is taken into *** idea of augmenting heat transmission by making use of a hybrid nanofluid is a focus of the current *** flow is affected by variations in the viscous forces,along with viscous dissipation effects and Marangoni convection.A time-constrained magnetic field is applied in the normal direction to the flow *** equations governing the flow system are shifted to a non-dimensional form by applying similarity *** homotopy analysis method is employed to find the solution to the resultant *** is noticed in this study that the flow characteristics decline with augmentation of magnetic,viscosity and unsteadiness parameters while they increase with enhanced values of thin-film *** characteristics are supported by increasing values of the Eckert number and the unsteadiness parameter and opposed by the viscosity parameter and Prandtl *** numerical impact of different emerging parameters upon skin friction and the Nusselt number is calculated in tabular form.A comparison of current work with established results is carried out,with good agreement.

In this research work,we present the evolution of Coulomb failure stress(CFS)in the Sulaiman Lobe and its implications for seismic hazard *** Chaman transform fault,~1,000 km long,is the major active fault that marks the western boundary between Pakistan and Afghanistan on the Indian *** date,few studies have been conducted to unveil the interactions among earthquakes and the implications of these interactions for seismic hazard assessment in the *** thoroughly investigated the published and online catalog to construct a sequence of major earthquakes that occurred in this region during the *** final earthquake sequence was composed of 15 earthquakes of M_(w)≥6.0,beginning with the 1888 *** used the stress-triggering theory to numerically simulate the evolution of CFS caused by these *** numerical results revealed that 8 out of 15earthquakes were triggered by the preceding *** earthquakes in 1908,1910,1935,1966,and 1997 were rather independent earthquakes in this *** the epicenters of the 1975a and 1975b earthquakes were in the stress shadow zone,the partial rupture segments of both these earthquakes were in high-CFS *** CFS induced by the 1935 earthquake was notable,as it later triggered the 2008 ***,our results revealed that the northern segment of the Chaman Fault,the southern segment of the Ghazaband Fault,and the northwestern segment of the Urghargai Fault demonstrated a high change in CFS that could trigger seismicity in these *** necessary arrangements must therefore be made to mitigate any possible seismic hazards in the region.

RNA interference （RNAi） of vital insect genes is a potential tool for targeted pest control. However, selection of the right target genes is a challenge because the RNAi efficacy is known to vary among insect species. Cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, is a phloem-feeding economically important crop pest. We evaluated the RNAi of 2 vital genes, Bursicon （PsBur） and V-ATPase （Ps V-ATPase） as potential targets in P. solenopsis for its control. PCR fragments of PsBur and PsV-ATPase were amplified using cDNA synthesized from the total RNA. The PCR amplicons were cloned into Potato virus X （PVX） to develop recombinant PVX for the inoculation ofNicotiana tabacum plants for bioassays with healthy P. solenopsis. Reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction （RT- PCR） was used to validate the expression oftransgenes in the recombinant-PVX-inoculated plants （treated）, and suppression of the target genes in the mealybugs exposed to them. The RT-PCR confirmed the expression of transgenes in the treated plants. Mealybug individuals on treated plants either died or showed physical deformities. Further, the population of mealybug was significantly reduced by feeding on N. tabacum expressing RNAi triggers against PsBur and Ps V-A TPase. The results conclude that RNAi is activated in P. solenopsis by feeding on N. tabacum expressing RNAi triggering elements of PsBur and Ps V-ATPase genes through recombinant PVX vector. Further, V-ATPase and Bursicon genes are potential targets for RNAi-mediated control ofP. solenopsis.

The geological and geographical position of the Northwest Himalayas makes it a vulnerable area for mass movements particularly landslides and debris flows. Mass movements have had a substantial impact on the study area which is extending along Karakorum Highway(KKH) from Besham to Chilas. Intense seismicity, deep gorges, steep terrain and extreme climatic events trigger multiple mountain hazards along the KKH, among which debris flow is recognized as the most destructive geohazard. This study aims to prepare a field-based debris flow inventory map at a regional scale along a 200 km stretch from Besham to Chilas. A total of 117 debris flows were identified in the field, and subsequently, a point-based debris-flow inventory and catchment delineation were performed through Arc GIS analysis. Regional scale debris flow susceptibility and propagation maps were prepared using Weighted Overlay Method(WOM) and Flow-R technique sequentially. Predisposing factors include slope, slope aspect, elevation, Topographic Roughness Index(TRI), Topographic Wetness Index(TWI), stream buffer, distance to faults, lithology rainfall, curvature, and collapsed material layer. The dataset was randomly divided into training data(75%) and validation data(25%). Results were validated through the Receiver Operator Characteristics(ROC) curve. Results show that Area Under the Curve(AUC) using WOM model is 79.2%. Flow-R propagation of debris flow shows that the 13.15%, 22.94%, and 63.91% areas are very high, high, and low susceptible to debris flow respectively. The propagation predicated by Flow-R validates the naturally occurring debris flow propagation as observed in the field surveys. The output of this research will provide valuable input to the decision makers for the site selection, designing of the prevention system, and for the protection of current infrastructure.

In this study,we report that Berlin Green(FeFe-BG)framework exhibits superior performance in the catalytic coupling of carbon disulfide(CS_(2))and propylene oxide(PO)to generate a random copolymer containing thioether,propylene monothiocarbonate and ether *** and sulfur atom exchange was detected in polymeric and cyclic thiocarbonate byproducts and utilized to modulate the copolymerization of CS_(2)and propylene *** coupling of PO and CS_(2)was selective for copolymer formation under various reaction conditions.^(1)H and^(13)C NMR spectroscopy determined two distinct polymer linkages and two cyclic *** number average molecular weights ranged from 6.4 kg/mol to 10.5 kg/mol,with a comparatively low polydispersity of *** CS_(2)/PO molar feed ratio had a significant impact on the O/S exchange process;the ratio of cyclic thiocarbonate byproducts could be efficiently regulated by tuning the CS_(2)molar feed ratio.

Recently, Flying Ad-hoc Networks （FANETs）, enabling ad-hoc networking between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles （UAVs） is gaining importance in several military and civilian applications. The sensitivity of the applications requires adaptive; efficient; delay bounded and scalable communication network among UAVs for data transmission. Due to communication protocol complexity; rigidity; cost of commercial-off-the-shelf （COT） components; limited radio bandwidth; high mobility and computational resources; maintaining the desired level of Quality of Service （QoS） becomes a daunting task. For the first time in this research we propose multicluster FANETs for efficient network management; the proposed scheme considerably reduces commu- nication cost and optimizes network performance as well as exploit low power; less complex and low cost IEEE 802.15.4 （MAC） protocol for intercluster and intracluster communication. In this research both beacon enabled mode and beaconless modes have been investigated with Guaranteed Time Slots （GTS） and virtual Time Division Multiple Access （TDMA） respectively. The methodology plays a key role towards reserving bandwidth for latency critical applications; eliminate collisions and medium access delays. Moreover analysis ad-hoc routing protocols including two proactive （OLSR, DSDV） and one reactive （AODV） is also presented. The results shows that the proposed scheme guarantees high packet delivery ratios while maintaining acceptable levels of latency requirements comparable with more complex and dedieatedly designed protocols in literature.
