Regolith thickness modeling using a GIS approach for landslide distribution analysis, NW Himalayas

Regolith thickness is considered as a contributing factor for the occurrence of ***, mostly it is ignored because of complex nature and as it requires more time and resources for investigation. This study aimed to appraise the role of regolith thickness on landslide distribution in the Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas, NW *** this purpose regolith thickness samples were evenly collected from all the lithological units at representative sites within different slope and elevation classes in the field. Topographic attributes(slope, aspect, drainage, Topographic Wetness Index,elevation and curvature) were derived from the Digital Elevation Model(DEM)(12.5 m resolution).Arc GIS Model Builder was used to develop the regolith thickness model. Stepwise regression technique was used to explore the spatial variation of regolith thickness using topographic attributes and lithological units. The derived model explains about 88% regolith thickness variation. The model was validated and shows good agreement(70%) between observed and predicted values. Subsequently, the derived regolith model was used to understand the relationship between regolith thickness and landslide distribution. The analysis shows that most of the landslides were located within 1-5 m regolith thickness. However, landslide concentration is highest within 5-10 m regolith thickness, which shows that regolith thickness played a significant role for the occurrence of landslide in the studied area.

Anthropogenic activities and natural processes are continuously altering the mountainous environment through deforestation, forest degradation and other land-use changes. It is highly important to assess, monitor and forecast forest cover and other land-use changes for the protection and conservation of mountainous environment. The present study deals with the assessment of forest cover and other land-use changes in the mountain ranges of Dir Kohistan in northern Pakistan, using high resolution multi-temporal SPOT-5 satellite images. The SPOT-5 satellite images of years 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 were acquired and classified into land-cover units. In addition, forest cover and land-use change detection map was developed using the classified maps of 2004 and 2013. The classified maps were verified through random field samples and Google Earth imagery(Quick birds and SPOT-5). The results showed that during the period 2004 to 2013 the area of forest land decreased by 6.4%, however, area of range land and agriculture land have increased by 22.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Similarly, barren land increased by 1.1%, whereas, area of snow cover/glacier is significantly decreased by 21.3%. The findings from the study will be useful for forestry and landscape planning and can be utilized by the local, provincial and national forest departments; and REDD+ policy makers in Pakistan.

A comprehensive landslide inventory and susceptibility maps are prerequisite for developing and implementing landslide mitigation strategies. Landslide susceptibility maps for the landslides prone regions in northern Pakistan are rarely available. The Hunza-Nagar valley in northern Pakistan is known for its frequent and devastating landslides. In this paper, we have developed a landslide inventory map for Hunza-Nagar valley by using the visual interpretation of the SPOT-5 satellite imagery and mapped a total of 172 landslides. The landslide inventory was subsequently divided into modelling and validation data sets. For the development of landslide susceptibility map seven discrete landslide causative factors were correlated with the landslide inventory map using weight of evidence and frequency ratio statistical models. Four different models of conditional independence were used for the selection of landslide causative factors. The produced landslides susceptibility maps were validated by the success rate and area under curves criteria. The prediction power of the models was also validated with the prediction rate curve. The validation results shows that the success rate curves of the weight of evidence and the frequency models are 82% and 79%, respectively. The prediction accuracy results obtained from this study are 84% for weight of evidence model and 80% for the frequency ratio model. Finally, the landslide susceptibility index maps were classified into five different varying susceptibility zones. The validation and prediction result indicates that the weight of evidence and frequency ratio model are reliable to produce an accurate landslide susceptibility map, which may be helpful for landslides management strategies.

This paper studies electrical resistivity dataset acquired for a groundwater study in the Domail Plain in the northwestern Himalayan section of Pakistan. Through a combination of geostatistical analysis,geophysical inversion and visualization techniques,it is possible to re-model and visualize the single dimension resistivity data into 2D and 3D *** variogram models are utilized to extend the interpretation of the data and to distinguish individual lithologic units and the occurrence of saline water within the subsurface. The resistivity data has been calibrated with the lithological logs taken from the available boreholes. As such the alluvial system of the Domail Plain has formed during episodes of local tectonic activity with fluvial erosion and depositionyielding coarse sediments with high electrical resistivities near to the mountain ranges and finer sediments with medium to low electrical resistivities which tend to settle in the basin center. Thus a change is depositional setting happened from basin lacustrine environment to flash flooding during the Himalayan orogeny. The occurrence of rock salt in the northern mountains has imparted a great influence on the groundwater quality of the study area. The salt is dissolved by water which infiltrates into the subsurface through the water channels. Variogram aided gridding of resistivity data helps to identify the occurrence and distribution of saline water in the subsurface.

Landsat-8 spectral values have been used to map the earth’s surface information for ***,forest types and other land-use/land-cover(LULC)in the mountain terrains exist on different altitudes and climatic ***,spectral information alone cannot be sufficient to accurately classify the forest types and other LULC,especially in high mountain *** this study,the suitability of Landsat-8 spectral bands and ancillary variables to discriminate forest types,and other LULC,using random forest(RF)classification algorithm for the Hindu Kush mountain ranges of northern Pakistan,was *** prior-examination(multicollinearity)of spectral bands and ancillary variables,three out of six spectral bands and five out of eight ancillary variables were selected with threshold correlation coefficients r2<*** selected datasets were stepwise stacked together and six Input Datasets(ID)were *** first ID-1 includes only the Surface Reflectance(SR)of spectral bands,and then in each ID,the extra one ancillary variable including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI),Normalized Difference Water Index(NDWI),Normalized Difference Snow Index(NDSI),Land Surface Temperature(LST),and Digital Elevation Model(DEM)was *** found an overall accuracy(OA)=72.8%and kappa coefficient(KC)=61.9%for the classification of forest types,and other LULC classes by using the only SR bands of *** OA=81.5%and KC=73.7%was improved by the addition of NDVI,NDWI,and NDSI to the spectral bands of ***,the addition of LST and DEM further increased the OA,and Kappa coefficient(KC)by 87.5%and 82.6%,*** indicates that ancillary variables play an important role in the classification,especially in the mountain terrain,and should be adopted in addition to spectral *** output of the study will be useful for the protection and conservation,analysis,climate change research,and other mountains forest-related management information.

Objective:The objective of this article is to systematically analyse the randomized,controlled trials comparing the effectiveness of purse-string closure(PSC)of an ileostomy wound with conventional linear closure(CLC).Methods:Randomized,controlled trials comparing the effectiveness of purse-string closure vs conventional linear closure(CLC)of ileostomy wound in patients undergoing ileostomy closure were analysed using RevMan-,and the combined outcomes were expressed as risk ratio(RR)and standardized mean difference(SMD).Results:Three randomized,controlled trials,recruiting 206 patients,were retrieved from medical electronic *** were 105 patients in the PSC group and 101 patients in the CLC *** was no heterogeneity among included *** of operation(SMD:-0.18;95%CI:-0.45,0.09;z=1.28;P<0.20)and length of hospital stay(SMD:0.01;95%CI:-0.26,0.28;z=0.07;P<0.95)was statistically similar following both approaches of ileostomy wound *** risk of surgical site infection(OR,0.10;95%CI:0.03,0.33;z=3.78;P<0.0001)was significantly reduced when ileostomy wound was closed using PSC ***:PSC technique for ileostomy wound is associated with a reduced risk of surgical site infection apparently without influencing the duration of operation and length of hospital stay.

火灾往往会对国家经济、人民生命及周围环境造成灾难性的破坏,因此对火灾进行早期检测至关重要。在各种火灾信号中,烟是最显著的信号之一,因为它通常比火焰产生得早。视频烟雾探测是森林草原等野外场所火灾探测的重要手段,但是烟雾早期探测中很难检测到像素占比极小的烟雾。为了解决这个问题,我们使用主成分分析(PCA)作为预处理模块,并与改进版本的YOLOv3集成在一起。本论文研究工作和结论总结如下:1.基于YOLOv3改进了网络结构。通过在stride-4上插入一个额外的探测尺度来对YOLOv3进行结构上的改进,以用于探测野外环境下像素占比极小的烟雾。改进后的网络通过跳跃连接(skip connections)和级联(concatenation)操作,在低层次空间信息的特征映射和上采样映射中的细粒度语义信息之间建立起序列关系。此外,为了在训练时将像素占比极小的烟雾图像作为正样本进行处理,基于指定联合交叉(IoU)阈值,对小尺度烟雾数据计算了新的锚框尺寸值,并使用K++均值聚类方法对输入数据点进行聚类,生成各个锚框的尺寸值。2.在自制的烟雾图像数据集上对改进后的模型进行了测试。数据集中烟雾数字图像是从存在云等干扰的山区等各种复杂的环境中获取的。我们在改进的YOLOv3的输入层集成了一个基于无监督学习的降维模块主成分分析(PCA),烟与非烟图像数据集在输入网络前会进行预处理降维。主成分分析(PCA)有助于选择有效特征,并在测试中摈弃冗余信息,从而避免了烟雾检测的延迟。3.优化了 YOLOv3的训练方案。在训练改进网络和传统网络时都采用了迁移学习训练方案,参数来自于预训练分类器。本文提出的网络在训练时,仅微调若干初始层并冻结原网络的最终分类层。本文所提出的训练方案采用特定的学习模式,而不是随机的权重初始化。4.新的模型取得了较好的探测实验结果。通过实验表明,准确率、召回率和平均谐波(F1值)分别提高了 2.67、3.06和5.59个百分点。平均精度(AP)和类平均精度(mAP)分别提高了1.66和2.78个百分点。

BACKGROUND: The objective of this article is to review the literature and discuss the various tools used in hepatobiliary surgery for the measurement of health related quality of life (HR-QOL) and highlight various outcome variables that affect the HR-QOL among patients with common hepatobiliary disorders. DATA SOURCES: We reviewed HR-QOL articles published in the last 20 years on different hepatobiliary curative or palliative procedures in all languages. RESULTS: HR-QOL is a questionnaire tool which is utilized to assess the changes in the health status of patients after a hepatobiliary intervention. These surveys are of increasingly importance, as health care providers are challenged to justify treatment approaches and rationale for any surgical intervention. These HR-QOL tools are very helpful for the evaluation of subjective outcome of common hepatobiliary procedures like gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI) for cholecystectomy, functional assessment in cancer therapy (FACT) for liver resection, short form 36 (SF-36) for liver transplantation, and quality of life questionnaire for patients with pancreatic cancer (QLQ-PAN). CONCLUSIONS: Use of validated and reliable health instruments in hepatobiliary surgery is directed at measuring the impact in a reproducible and valid fashion. Curative or palliative procedures should be offered to the patients of hepatobiliary disorders after the assessment by HR-QOL tools. Because the impairments of function that may occur after different operations vary considerably, an operation-specific assessment of HR-QOL for each type of surgical procedure is becoming an essential principle to follow in a successful healthcare system.

Background:The aim of this article is to report and discuss a case of lower rectal cancer undergoing endoscopic transanal resection of tumour(ETART)using a transanal minimally invasive surgery(TAMIS)***:A technical note on a case *** innovative approach for ETART using ***:This is the first-ever case report of lower rectal cancer treated by ETART using a TAMIS *** procedure was completed successfully without any operative or peri-operative ***-operative flexible sigmoidoscopy confirmed a wide and patent rectal ***:Use of a TAMIS approach for ETART to remove lower rectal cancer for palliation can be technically very effective compared with conventional ETART,due to the potential advantages of avoiding contaminant fluid spillage,easy access,better visualization compared with conventional ETART,and being *** results from larger cohorts of patients undergoing TAMIS ETART are required before recommending the routine use of this ***,until then,this approach may be considered as an alternative to conventional ETART.
