Are Spatial Factors Important in the Adoption of Eco-Friendly Agricultural Technologies? Evidence on Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Past studies on the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM), analyzed the significance of non-spatial factors (social, economic, institutional and management factors etc.) in influencing farmers’ decision to adopt IPM while the present study analyzed spatial factors in addition to these non-spatial factors to address the questions-i. Do the spatial factors significantly influence the farmers to adopt IPM? If yes, then to what extent they do affect IPM adoption? The data were collected from 331 vegetable farmers of Narsingdi district, Bangladesh, by conducting a household survey. Farmers’ nineteen characteristics under five broad groups, namely social, economic, institutional, management and spatial factors were analyzed. The result of the binary logistic regression model revealed that two spatial factors namely the distance of farmers’ house from the nearest market and the distance from agriculture office, along with some specific social, economic, institutional and management factors, significantly influenced the farmers’ to use IPM. It is also observed from the model that the role of spatial factors was important in influencing IPM adoption. However, with regard to the level of importance, their contribution was less than those of economic and institutional factors but more than those of social and management factors. The influences of these factors in practicing IPM are discussed individually as well as group based. The findings show significance in domestic policy making.

Farmers’ Knowledge on Climate Change Effects in Agriculture

The major objectives of the study were to determine farmers’ knowledge on climate change effects in agriculture and to identify the factors that influenced farmers’ knowledge on climate change effects in agriculture. The study was conducted in four villages under Kazipur upazila of Sirajgonj district. Data were collected by using interview schedule from randomly selected 113 respondents during 1st January to 30th January, 2018. The findings revealed that an overwhelming majority (78.8%) of the respondents had medium to high knowledge on climate change effects in agriculture. Among eight selected characteristics, extension media contact, training received, organizational participation, and cosmopoliteness had significant positive contribution to the farmers’ knowledge on climate change effects in agriculture. It is recommended that to increase farmers’ knowledge on climate change effects initiative should be taken to improve farmers’ knowledge through more involving with organization, extension media and program.

Assessment of ecological risk for heavy metals in surface sediment of an urban river in a developing country

The speed of increasing threats to the riverine water resources makes it more critical to protect the health of Old Brahmaputra River *** current study was done to investigate the concentrations,distributions,sources,and ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment from the Old Brahmaputra River,*** were collected from seven sites and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer(ICP-MS).The results showed that mean concentrations(mg/kg) of heavy metals were in the order of nickel(Ni)(44.69)> chromium(Cr)(30.16)> lead(Pb)(19.31)>copper(Cu)(17.84)> cadmium(Cd)(3.94)> arsenic(As)(2.73).The contamination factor(CF),pollution load index(PLI),enrichment factor(EF),and geo-accumulation index(Igeo) indicated low to moderate *** unit analysis revealed that the studied metals from all stations posed low *** sediment of the study river was uncontaminated to moderately contaminated,posing a minimal ecological ***,Cr,Ni,and Pb originated from anthropogenic sources rather than geogenic sources,and caused the severity of *** this regard,pollutant-based intensive monitoring of heavy metals and holistic ecological risk assessments are required to maintain a sound and healthy aquatic environment in the river.

Biodegradable metals(BMs)gradually degrade in vivo by releasing corrosion products once exposed to the physiological environment in the *** dissolution of biodegradable implants assists tissue healing,with no implant residues in the surrounding *** recent years,three classes of BMs have been extensively investigated,including magnesium(Mg)-based,iron(Fe)-based,and zinc(Zn)-based *** these three BMs,Mg-based materials have undergone the most clinical ***,Mg-based BMs generally exhibit faster degradation rates,which may not match the healing periods for bone tissue,whereas Fe-based BMs exhibit slower and less complete in vivo ***-based BMs are now considered a new class of BMs due to their intermediate degradation rates,which fall between those of Mg-based BMs and Fe-based BMs,thus requiring extensive research to validate their suitability for biomedical *** the present study,recent research and development on Zn-based BMs are reviewed in conjunction with discussion of their advantages and limitations in relation to existing *** underlying roles of alloy composition,microstructure,and processing technique on the mechanical and corrosion properties of Zn-based BMs are also discussed.

Finite Element Analysis of Magnetohydrodynamic Natural Convection within Semi-Circular Top Enclosure with Triangular Obstacles

The phenomena of magneto-hydrodynamic natural convection in a two-dimensional semicircular top enclosure with triangular obstacle in the rectangular cavity were studied numerically. The governing differential equations are solved by using the most important method which is finite element method (weighted-residual method). The top wall is placed at cold Tc and bottom wall is heated Th. Here the sidewalls of the cavity assumed adiabatic. Also all the wall are occupied to be no-slip condition. A heated triangular obstacle is located at the center of the cavity. The study accomplished for Prandtl number Pr = 0.71;the Rayleigh number Ra = 103, 105, 5 × 105, 106 and for Hartmann number Ha = 0, 20, 50, 100. The results represent the streamlines, isotherms, velocity and temperature fields as well as local Nusselt number.

The alteration in the architecture of a T-DNA insertion rice mutant osmtd1 is caused by up-regulation of Micro RNA156f

Plant architecture is an important factor for crop production. Some members of microRNA156 (miR156) and their target genes SQUAMOSA Promoter-Binding Protein-Like (SPL) were identified to play essential roles in the establishment of plant architecture. However, the roles and regulation of miR156 is not well understood yet. Here, we identified a T-DNA insertion mutant Osmtd1 (Oryza sativa multi-tillering and dwarf mutant). Osmtd1 produced more tillers and displayed short stature phenotype. We determined that the dramatic morphological changes were caused by a single T-DNA insertion in Osmtd1. Further analysis revealed that the T-DNA insertion was located in the gene Os08g34258 encoding a putative inhibitor I family protein. Os08g34258 was knocked out and OsmiR156f was significantly upregulated in Osmtd1. Overexpression of Os08g34258 in Osmtd1 complemented the defects of the mutant architecture, while overexpression of OsmiR156f in wild-type rice phenocopied Osmtd1. We showed that the expression of OsSPL3, OsSPL12, and OsSPL14 were significantly downregulated in Osmtd1 or OsmiR156f overexpressed lines, indicating that OsSPL3, OsSPL12, and OsSPL14 were possibly direct target genes of OsmiR156f. Our results suggested that OsmiR156f controlled plant architecture by mediating plant stature and tiller outgrowth and may be regulated by an unknown protease inhibitor I family protein.

Hybrid Real-Time and Preset Processing for Indoor Radio Geo-Location in Dense Multipath Environments

The existence of various geo-location applications and their accuracy requirements enhance the necessities for suitable processing techniques to solve the indoor geo-location problems. Since, Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) signals have very short duration pulses;they can provide very accurate ranging and geo-location capability in short range indoor radio propagation environments. Our research puts emphasis on indoor geo-location using UWB signaling considering both of non line-of-sight (NLOS) and LOS radio propagation environments. In this paper, we introduce and investigate a noble approach which makes a hybrid combination of Channel Impulse Response (CIR)-based finger-printing (FP) method with polygonal arrangement of reference nodes (or tags) and an iterative-TOA based real-time geo-location method using UWB signaling for wireless ad hoc networks. The proposed hybrid approach assures significant improvement in positioning accuracy compared to TOA only, FP only and conventional iterative-TOA geo-location methods by mitigating NLOS errors effectively in the indoor environment. Besides, this hybrid approach minimizes the calculation complexity of the FP method while maintaining improved geo-location accuracy in the dense multipath propagation environment.

Sustainable Denim Washing by Process Optimization

Now-a-days sustainability is a crucial issue in denim washing. This research initiative is performed aiming to resolve the crisis of sustainability in denim washing by process optimization technique which highlights the reduction of water, chemical and time as well as costing of denim garments. In this research work, process optimization technique is administered by reducing several wash & chemical application baths into a single bath confirming without alteration of physical properties and color fastness of denim fabric. For confirmation without alteration of physical properties and color fastness, several tests are carried out like tensile and tear strength, color fastness to rubbing, color fastness to wash, color fastness to water, color fastness to perspiration and CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) value for both conventional and sustainable washing method. BOD, COD and pH of waste water is determined which shows better result in sustainable washing method also. Reduction of rinsing time in sustainable washing method results in less consumption of water by 475 and process time by 19% and also saves $0.34/ dozen garments which validate the cost effectiveness of this sustainable washing method.

A Multilayer Security Framework for Cloud Computing in Internet of Things (IoT) Domain

Cloud computing is a type of emerging computing technology that relies on shared computing resources rather than having local servers or personal devices to handle applications. It is an emerging technology that provides services over the internet: Utilizing the online services of different software. Many works have been carried out and various security frameworks relating to the security issues of cloud computing have been proposed in numerous ways. But they do not propose a quantitative approach to analyze and evaluate privacy and security in cloud computing systems. In this research, we try to introduce top security concerns of cloud computing systems, analyze the threats and propose some countermeasures for them. We use a quantitative security risk assessment model to present a multilayer security framework for the solution of the security threats of cloud computing systems. For evaluating the performance of the proposed security framework we have utilized an Own-Cloud platform using a 64-bit quad-core processor based embedded system. Own-Cloud platform is quite literally as any analytics, machine learning algorithms or signal processing techniques can be implemented using the vast variety of Python libraries built for those purposes. In addition, we have proposed two algorithms, which have been deployed in the Own-Cloud for mitigating the attacks and threats to cloud-like reply attacks, DoS/DDoS, back door attacks, Zombie, etc. Moreover, unbalanced RSA based encryption is used to reduce the risk of authentication and authorization. This framework is able to mitigate the targeted attacks satisfactorily.

Context-Aware System Modeling Based on Boolean Control Network

Boolean control network consists of a set of Boolean variables whose state is determined by other variables in the network. Boolean network is used for modeling complex system. In this paper, we have presented a model of a context-aware system used in smart home based on Boolean control networks. This modeling describes the relationship between the context elements (person, time, location, and activity) and services (Morning Call, Sleeping, Guarding, Entertainment, and normal), which is effective to logical inference. We apply semi tensor matrix product to describe the dynamic of the system. This matrix form of expression is a convenient and reasonable way to design logic control system.
