Surface-plasmonic sensor using a columnar thin film in the grating-coupled configuration [Invited]

The excitation of a surface-plasmon-polariton(SPP) wave guided by a columnar thin film(CTF) deposited on a one-dimensional metallic surface-relief grating was investigated for sensing the refractive index of a fluid infiltrating that CTF. The Bruggemann homogenization formalism was used to determine the relative permittivity scalars of the CTF infiltrated by the fluid. The change in the refractive index of the fluid was sensed by determining the change in the incidence angle for which an SPP wave was excited on illumination by a p-polarized plane wave, when the plane of incidence was taken to coincide with the grating plane but not with the morphologically significant plane of the CTF. Multiple excitations of the same SPP wave were found to be possible, depending on the refractive index of the fluid, which can help increase the reliability of results by sensing the same fluid with more than one excitation of the SPP wave.

An optical-sensing modality that exploits Dyakonov–Tamm waves

Surface-wave-based optical sensing of an analyte in a fluid relies on the sensitivity of the surface wave to the electromagnetic properties of the analyte-containing fluid in the vicinity of the guiding interface. Surfaceplasmon-polariton(SPP) waves are most commonly used for optical sensing because of the ease of the excitation of an SPP wave when the fluid is partnered with a metal. If the fluid is replaced by a porous, anisotropic, and periodically nonhomogeneous solid filled with the fluid, while the metal is replaced by an isotropic homogeneous dielectric material, the surface wave is called a Dyakonov–Tamm(DT) wave. We have theoretically determined that the incorporation of the DT-waveguiding interface in a prism-coupled configuration provides an alternative to the analogous SPP wave-based sensor, with comparable dynamic sensitivity.

Near-field enhancement of optical second harmonic generation in hybrid gold-lithium niobate nanostructures

Nanophotonics research has focused recently on the ability of nonlinear optical processes to mediate and transform optical signals in a myriad of novel devices,including optical modulators,transducers,color filters,photodetectors,photon sources,and ultrafast optical *** inherent weakness of optical nonlinearities at smaller scales has,however,hindered the realization of efficient miniaturized devices,and strategies for enhancing both device efficiencies and synthesis throughput via nanoengineering remain ***,we demonstrate a novel mechanism by which second harmonic generation,a prototypical nonlinear optical phenomenon,from individual lithium niobate particles can be significantly enhanced through nonradiative coupling to the localized surface plasmon resonances of embedded gold nanoparticles.A joint experimental and theoretical investigation of single mesoporous lithium niobate particles coated with a dispersed layer of~10 nm diameter gold nanoparticles shows that a~32-fold enhancement of second harmonic generation can be achieved without introducing finely tailored radiative nanoantennas to mediate photon transfer to or from the nonlinear *** work highlights the limitations of current strategies for enhancing nonlinear optical phenomena and proposes a route through which a new class of subwavelength nonlinear optical platforms can be designed to maximize nonlinear efficiencies through near-field energy exchange.
