Malaria remains a major public health challenge globally.It is one of the world’s deadliest diseases,responsible for 627000 deaths worldwide in 2020 alone[1].In Malaysia,the Malaria Eradication Programme in Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysia Borneo in 1969 and 1967,respectively,drastically reduced the number of malaria cases in the country[2].Subsequently,the programme was further reinforced and improved,resulting in zero indigenous human malaria species in 2018[1].Currently,Malaysia has been identified as one of the World Health Organization(WHO)Western Pacific Region countries with zero indigenous cases for three consecutive years[1],thus eligible for the WHO certification of a malaria-free status country.

Objective: To determine the etiologies of tropical acute febrile illness(TAFI) in West Pahang, Malaysia and to investigate morbidity and mortality factors in relation to TAFI. Methods: A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted between January and June 2016 in six district hospitals throughout the western part of Pahang State in Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 336 patients answered a standardized questionnaire and blood samples were collected for laboratory confirmation of infectious etiology. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression were performed to identify factors associated with TAFI. Results: A total of 336 patients were included. The patients were mainly Malays(70.2%), males(61.3%), aged(44.6±17.4) years, with more than half(58.9%) presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms. The majority were diagnosed with dengue(35.7%) while malaria(4.5%) was the least frequent. The in-hospital mortality due to TAFI was 9.2%. Patients with meliodosis had five times higher mortality [Adjusted OR: 5.002, 95% CI:(1.233, 20.286)]. Patients with comorbidities such as cardiovascular symptoms(P<0.001) and renal replacement therapy initiation(P<0.001) were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality in all TAFI. Conclusions: The etiology of TAFI in the western Pahang includes dengue, leptospirosis, malaria and melioidosis, which carry the highest risk of in-hospital mortality. The presence of cardiovascular symptoms may be used to assess the disease severity in TAFI, but more studies are needed in the future.

Quaternary glasses were successfully fabricated using melt quenching technique based on the chemical compound composition(x)Bi_(2)O_(3)–(0:5-x)ZnO-(0.2)B_(2)O_(3)–(0.3)SiO_(2),where(x=0.1,0.2,0.3,0.4,0.45)mole.The sources of SiO_(2)was produced from rice husk ash(RHA)at 99.36%of SiO_(2).The Urbach energy was increased from 0.16 eV to the 0.29 eV as the mole of Bi_(2)O_(3)increased in the glass structure.The indirect energy band gap is indicated in decrement pattern with 3.15 eV towards 2.51 eV.The results of Urbach energy and band gap energy that were obtained are due to the increment of Bi^(3+)ion in the glass network.The refractive indexes for the prepared glasses were evaluated at 2.36 to 2.54 based on the Lorentz–Lorentz formulation which correlated to the energy band gap.The calculated of molar polarizability,electronic polarizability and optical basicity exemplify fine complement to the Bi_(2)O_(3)addition in the glass network.The glass sample was indicated in amorphous state.

This paper examines the long-and short-run dynamics of asymmetric adjustment between the nominal exchange rate and commodity prices,namely oil,palm oil,rubber,and natural gas prices,in Malaysia using monthly data from January 1994 to December 2017.The relationship between exchange rate and each commodity price is examined in terms of Engle-Granger and threshold cointegrations.The estimated results provide evidence of long-run threshold cointegration and show that the adjustments towards the long-run equilibrium position are asymmetric in the short run.Furthermore,this study finds evidence of a unidirectional causal relationship running from the nominal exchange rate to oil price in the long and short run using a spectral frequency domain causality application.There is also empirical evidence of bidirectional causality between the nominal exchange rate and palm oil price,rubber price,and natural gas price in the long and short run.Overall,the findings have significant implications for the current debate on the future of primary commodities in Malaysia.
