The integration of high mechanical toughness,impact strength as well as excellent flame-retardant properties toward epoxy resins(EPs)have always been a *** inadequate overall performance of EPs severely restricts their sustainable utilization in engineering aspects over ***,a new bio-based agent(diglycidyl ether of magnolol phosphine oxide,referred as DGEMP)derived from magnolol(classified as lignan),extracted from natural plants Magnolia officinalis,was successfully synthesized and further employed as a flameretardant reactive additive to diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA).As demonstration,the composite resin,DGEBA/15DGEMP(15 wt%DGEMP),achieved an Underwriters Laboratories-94 V-0 rating with a high limiting oxygen index(LOI)value(41.5%).In cone calorimeter tests,it showed that heat release and smoke production were effectively inhibited during combustion,wherein the peak heat release rate(PHRR)value of DGEBA/15DGEMP was reduced by 50%compared to neat ***,it exhibited a superior tensile strength(82.8 MPa),toughness(5.11MJ/m^(3))and impact strength(36.5 k J/m^(2)),much higher than that of neat DGEBA(49.7 MPa,2.05 MJ/m^(3)and 20.9 k J/m^(2)).Thus,it is highly anticipated that DGEMP imparts significantly improved mechanical and fire-retarded properties to conventional EPs,which holds a great potential to address the pressing challenges in EP thermosets industry.

Formation of Potholes Associated with Bedrock Gorges on Mesozoic Sandstone of Khari River, Kachchh Mainland, Western India

The potholes are perceptible erosional features associated with bedrock channels. They play an essential role in bedrock incision studies, but little work has been published on the development of potholes, especially in Bedrock Rivers in India. The present site-specific study aims to analyze the role of physical properties of bedrock and associated structures in the process of development of potholes and to classify the potholes based on their dimensions. The Khari River gorge formed over Mesozoic Sandstone with six bedrock terraces exposed along a confined segment of the river. The site is manifested by strath terraces, grooves, potholes, and knick points. Three stretches of Khari Gorge have been studied in detail for this purpose. The pothole dimensions, joint orientations, rock mass strength, physical properties of rock, and placing of potholes to present active channels were measured. The analysis shows the inverse relationship between the size of pothole and rock properties. The distance of potholes and active channels govern the essential factor and manifest the role of flow hydraulics. The high density of matured potholes near active channels over immature potholes supports primary control of hydraulics of flow over rock properties.

Like several Sahelian countries, Senegal is facing a strong degradation of woody and arable resources. This is due to the development of certain inappropriate agricultural practices. To mitigate this situation, the populations tend to preserve and maintain certain woody species of interest in the fields, thus constituting agroforestry parks. Thus, the objective of this study was to contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of woody vegetation in agroforestry parks in the department of Bignona. To this end, a plot of 2500 m2 (50 m × 50 m) was installed in the fields of each farmer selected in a sample of 99 farm managers distributed in the three communes (Djinaky, Kataba1 and Kafountine) of the Kataba1 district, for a total of 99 plots installed. A total of seventy-three (73) species divided into fifty-five (55) genera and twenty-eight (27) botanical families were inventoried. In the agroforestry parks of the Kataba 1 district, the density of woody vegetation is 56.12 individuals/ha, the cover rate is 27.9% and the basal area is 5.9 m2/ha. The vertical structure of the woody vegetation is characterized by a predominance of individuals between 2 and 4 m in height (48.07%). As for the horizontal structure, it is characterized by a predominance of individuals of diameter between 5 and 20 cm (39.19%). These results obtained will serve as a source of information for better management of these agroforestry parks by the populations.

Although open leg fractures are very common in orthopedics and traumatology, bilateral open leg fractures are extremely rare and are usually associated with an increased risk of complications. We report a case of a simultaneous, asymmetrical, comminuted and bilateral open fracture of the tibia and fibula by a firearm that occurred during an escape attempt in a 29-year-old prisoner. The pre-operative radiological assessment found an open fracture of both legs of the ballistic type;multiple traumatic gunshot wounds with a narrow entry hole and a wide exit hole. Early surgical intervention of intravenous antibiotics, tetanus prophylaxis and open fracture irrigation and debridement was performed within the 6 hour rule. The treatment consisted of a posterior splint followed by trimming andosteosynthesis using a FESSA external fixator from the military health service. A second operation was not needed. Evolution was favorable with ambulation starting from the 45th day. Simultaneous and bilateral tibia-fibula fractures by a firearm are exceptional, therefore, the treatment was surgical with the pre-operative and post-operative protocols well managed.

The purpose of this study carried out in the township of Dahra was to access the effect of dry season protein and mineral supplementation of Gobra and Crossbreed Guzerat cows on milk production. The experimental design is a completely randomized block. The treatments were: supplement of molasse-urea blocks with supplement of hay;supplement of molasse-urea blocks without any hay;no supplement of molasse-urea blocks and supplement of hay;no supplement of molasse-urea block without any hay. For each breed, the treatments were replicated three times on a lot of cows with the similar zootechnic parameters. A total of twelve lactating cows per breed were then used. The supplement of block + hay has significantly (p < 5%) allowed obtaining the largest average daily quantity of milk: 1.9 ± 0.7L/day/cow and 2.4 ± 0.8 L/day/cow respectively in Gobra and Crossbreed Gobra*Guzerat. The increases in production compared to the control treatment (without supplement) are 52.63% and 100% respectively in the breed Gobra and Gobra*Guzerat. The supplement of hay comes in the second place and contributes to an additional production of 66.66% in both breeds of cow. Then, the supplement of block follows and it allows increasing the production of 44.44% and 50% respectively in Gobra and Crossbreed. In both races, the supplement of block + hay has allowed obtaining the highest profits of $1.6/L/day/cow for Gobra and $ 2.8/L/day/cow for the Crossbreed, that equals to an increase by $ 0.3 and $ 0.9 compared to the control treatment. The supplement of hay and the block supplement have respectively given a profit of 0.4 and $ 0.3/L/day/cow in Gobra and 0.6 and $ 0.4/L/day/cow in the Crossbreed. The adoption of supplementation molasse-urea block + hay by producers appears an alternative to boost milk production in dry season.

Traumatic Floating Bone. About 11 Cases and a Literature Review

Introduction: Floating bone injury or bipolar dislocation is a concurrent dislocation at both ends of a long bone or a flat bone. It is an exceptional injury. We report 11 consecutives cases of floating bones. Objectives: The aim of the study is to analyze the frequency, the mechanism of injury and clinical forms of floating bones, and to present the results of their management. Material and Methods: A ten years ongoing retrospective study was held in four trauma departments. Eleven cases of floating bones were identified. The floating bones characteristics such as the injured bone, the patient age and sex, the mechanism of injury, the dislocations directions, the associated complications, the treatment and the outcome were studied. Results: Nine male and two female patients, with a mean age of 37 years [19 - 65 years range] presented a concurrent bipolar dislocation of one bone or a group of bones. They sustained a road traffic accident (n = 5), a workplace accident (n = 3), a fall from height (n = 2), and a sport accident (n = 1). The clavicle (n = 3) and the first metatarsal (n = 3) were the most frequently involved. The others floating bones were the radius-ulna complex (n = 1), the radius-lunatum complex (n = 1), the first metacarpal (n = 1), the first phalanx (n = 1) and the femur (n = 1). The floating bones ends displacement occurred in the sagittal plane (the forearm, the femur, the first phalanx and the first metatarsal) and in the horizontal plane (the clavicle, the first metatarsal and the first metacarpal). We defined direction displacements as bidirectional asymmetric (n = 10) or unidirectional symmetric (n = 1). Associated complications were fractures (wrist, hip, tarso-metatarsal joints) and wounds (fingers, metatarso-phalangeal joint). Dislocations were treated conservatively (n = 5) and surgically (n = 17) with excellent results (n = 13/16 joints). Three patients were lost of view.
