Statistical Analysis for Assessing Randomness, Shift and Trend in Rainfall Time Series under Climate Variability and Change: Case of Senegal

The main purpose of this study is to assess the climate variability and change through statistical processing tools that able to highlight annual and monthly rainfall behavior between 1970 and 2010 in six strategical raingauges located in northern (Saint-Louis, Bakel), central (Dakar, Kaolack), and southern (Ziguinchor, Tambacounda) part of Senegal. Further, differences in sensitivity of statistical tests are also exhibited by applying several tests rather than a single one to check for one behavior. Dependency of results from statistical tests on studied sequence in time series is also shown comparing results of tests applied on two different periods (1970-2010 and 1960-2010). Therefore, between 1970 and 2010, exploratory data analysis is made to give in a visible manner a first idea on rainfall behavior. Then, Statistical characteristics such as the mean, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis are calculated. Subsequently, statistical tests are applied to all retained time series. Kendall and Spearman rank correlation tests allow verifying whether or not annual rainfall observations are independent. Hubert’s procedures of segmentation, Pettitt, Lee Heghinian and Buishand tests allow checking rainfall homogeneity. Trend is undertaken by first employing the annual and seasonal Mann-Kendall trend test, and in case of significance, magnitude of trend is calculated by Sen’s slope estimator tests. All statistical tests are applied in the period of 1960-2010. Explanatory analysis data indicates upwards trends for records in northern and central and trend free for southern records. Application of multiple tests shows that the Kendall and spearman ranks correlation tests lead to same conclusion. The difference in tests sensitivity was shown by outcomes of homogeneity tests giving different results either in dates of the shift occurrence or in the significance of an eventual shift. Calibration and Validation of the SWAT Model on the Watershed of Bafing River, Main Upstream Tributary of Senegal River: Checking for the Influence of the Period of Study

Management of reservoir water resources requires the knowledge of flow inputs in this reservoir. Hydrological rainfall-runoff model is used for this purpose. There are several types of hydrological model according the description of the hydrological processes: black-box models, conceptual models, deterministic physical based model. SWAT is a semi-distributed hydrological model designed for water quality and quantity. This versatile tool has been used all around the world to assess and manage water resources. The main objective of the paper is to calibrate and validate the SWAT model on the watershed of Bafing located between 10°30' and 12°30' north latitude and between 12°30' and 9°30' west longitude to assess climate change on this river flows. A DEM with a resolution of 12.5 m × 12.5 m, the daily average flows and the daily observed precipitations on the period 1979-1986 (long period) are used as inputs for the calibration, while precipitations for the period 1988-1994 are used for the validation. The sensitivity analysis was done to detect the most determining coefficients during the calibration step. It shows that 19 parameters are required. Then, the effect of the period on the parameters calibration is checked by considering first the whole period of study and then each year of the period of study. Manganese(Ⅲ) acetate-mediated radical reaction of [60]fullerene with bromoacetic acid,3-chloropropionic acid or 1-naphthylacetic acid

The manganese(Ⅲ) acetate-mediated radical reaction of [60]fullerene (C60) with three carboxylic acids,that is,bromoacetic acid,3-chloropropionic acid,and 1-naphthylacetic acid,was investigated. The reaction of C60 with bromoacetic acid in the presence of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine afforded the anticipated C60-fused lactone,while the reaction with 3-chloropropionic acid unexpectedly led to the formation of a novel C60-fused lactone with the loss of one molecule of HCl. Interestingly,the reaction with 1-naphthylacetic acid under similar conditions gave both C60-fused lactone and 1,4-adduct,yet each of them could be selectively obtained by controlling reaction conditions. It was also observed that the C60-fused lactone bearing a bulky naphthyl group existed as two isomers.

Calibration of HEC-RAS Model for One Dimensional Steady Flow Analysis—A Case of Senegal River Estuary Downstream Diama Dam

The Sahelian regions have experienced a drought that has made them vulnerable to hydro-climatic conditions. Strategies have been developed to reduce this vulnerability. The governments of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali and Guinea have created the Organization for the development of the Senegal River (OMVS in french) with the aim of realizing large hydraulic installations. This resulted in the construction of the Diama and Manantali dams in the Senegal River Basin. The first aims to stop the saline intrusion, the second to regulate the flow of the river, to allow the irrigation of agricultural perimeters, and to produce electrical energy. The impoundment of the Diama dam has modified the hydraulic behavior of the estuary. The purpose of this study is to carry out the hydraulic modeling of the estuary of Senegal river downstream of the Diama Dam in transient mode by the HEC-RAS software. Two geometric models were constructed on the basis of a digital terrain model (DTM) using the Arc-GIS and HEC GeoRAS soft wares after processing the collected topographic data. The first geometric model, of which the areas of Senegal river downstream Diama Dam have been represented by cross-section, is one-dimensional. The second one is also one dimensional;in this model, the area of the Senegal River estuary downstream Diama Dam is introduced as water storage zones. The components of these models are the stream sections, lateral links, and storage areas. The flood hydrograph downstream Diama Dam is introduced as conditions at the upstream limits of the models while the tidal is introduced as a downstream condition. Pitching Moment Generation in an Insect-Mimicking Flapping-Wing System

Unlike birds, insects lack control surfaces at the tail and hence most insects modify their wing kinematics to produce control forces or moments while flapping their wings. Change of the flapping angle range is one of the ways to modify wing kinematics, resulting in relocation of the mean Aerodynamic force Center （mean AC） and finally creating control moments. In an attempt to mimic this feature, we developed a flapping-wing system that generates a desired pitching moment during flap- ping-wing motion. The system comprises a flapping mechanism that creates a large and symmetric flapping motion in a pair of wings, a flapping angle change mechanism that modifies the flapping angle range, artificial wings, and a power source. From the measured wing kinematics, we have found that the flapping-wing system can properly modify the flapping angle ranges. The measured pitching moments show that the flapping-wing system generates a pitching moment in a desired direction by shifting the flapping angle range. We also demonstrated that the system can in practice change the longitudinal attitude by generating a nonzero pitching moment.

Modeling of Unsteady Flow through Junction in Rectangular Channels: Impact of Model Junction in the Downstream Channel Hydrograph

Open channel junctions are encountered in urban water treatment plants, irrigation and drainage canals, and natural river systems. Junctions are very important in municipal sewerage systems and river engineering. Adequate theoretical description of flow through an open channel junction is difficult because numerous variables are to be considered. Equations of junction models are based on mass and momentum or mass and energy conservation. The objective of this study is to compare two junction models for subcritical flows. In channel branches, we solve numerically the Saint-Venant hyperbolic system by combining Preissmann scheme and double sweep method. We validate our results with HEC-RAS using Nash and Sutcliffe efficiency. In junction models, equality of water stage and complete energy conservation equation from HEC-RAS are compared. Outcome of the research clearly indicates that the complete conservation energy model is more suitable in flow through junction than equality of water stage model in serious situations.

Evaluating factors associated with the risk of hydrothorax following standard supracostal percutaneous nephrolithotomy

Objective:To report our experience with supracostal percutaneous nephrolithotomy(SC-PNL)and evaluate factors which could predict the risk of hydrothorax following ***:We reviewed 347 patients who underwent SC-PNL from January 2011 to December *** were assessed for demographic characteristics,indication for the supracostal access,level of supracostal access,anatomy of the kidney(normal or malrotated),site of the puncture in relation to the mid-scapular line(medial or lateral),and whether another subcostal tract for stone clearance was required or *** were assessed for the incidence of hydrothorax and requirement of intercostal drain depending on the level of percutaneous *** addition,a multivariable logistic regression analysis model was developed to identify factors which could predict the occurrence of hydrothorax following ***:Of the 347 patients with SC-PNL,248(71.5%)underwent a supra-12th rib approach,while the rest needed a supra-11th(n=85;24.5%)or a supra-10th(n=14;4.0%)rib ***,17(4.9%)patients developed a hydrothorax,while an intercostal-drain was required in seven of these 17 patients for 48 *** of the patients with a supra-12th rib puncture required an *** than a third of the patients with a supra-10th puncture developed a hydrothorax(35.7%)and all of them required an intercostal *** such as anteriorly malrotated kidney(odds ratio[OR]=2.722;95%confidence interval[CI]=1.042-5.617,p=0.03),puncture medial to the mid-scapular line(OR=1.669;CI=0.542-1.578,p=0.03),and an access higher than the supra-12th level(OR=5.265;CI=1.292-9.342,p<0.001)proved to be independent predictors of hydrothorax following a SC-PCNL on multivariable ***:Incidence of clinically significant hydrothorax requiring an intercostal-drain after SC-PNL is very *** of the predicting factors will help to anticipate the risk of hydrothorax in a particular patient and take necessary p
