Emotion processing in Parkinson's disease: a blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia are the major symptoms of the disease. These motor impairments are often accompanied by affective and emotional dysfunctions which have been largely studied over the last decade. The aim of this study was to investigate emotional processing organization in the brain of patients with Parkinson's disease and to explore whether there are differences between recognition of different types of emotions in Parkinson's disease. We examined 18 patients with Parkinson's disease(8 men, 10 women) with no history of neurological or psychiatric comorbidities. All these patients underwent identical brain blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging for emotion evaluation. Blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging results revealed that the occipito-temporal cortices, insula, orbitofrontal cortex, basal ganglia, and parietal cortex which are involved in emotion processing, were activated during the functional control. Additionally, positive emotions activate larger volumes of the same anatomical entities than neutral and negative emotions. Results also revealed that Parkinson's disease associated with emotional disorders are increasingly recognized as disabling as classic motor symptoms. These findings help clinical physicians to recognize the emotional dysfunction of patients with Parkinson's disease.

Differential Effect of Artemisinin Against Cancer Cell Lines

The present study aims at defining the differential cytotoxicity effect of artemisinin toward P815(murin mastocytoma)and BSR(kidney adenocarcinoma of hamster)cell lines.Cytotoxicity was measured by the growth inhibition using MTT assay.These in vitro cytotoxicity studies were complemented by the determination of apoptotic DNA fragmentation and Annexin V-streptavidin-FITC assay.Furthermore,we examined the in vitro synergism between artemisinin and the chemotherapeutic drug,vincristin.The in vivo study was investigated using the DBA2/P815(H2d)mouse model.While artemisinin acted on both tumor cell lines,P815 was much more sensitive to this drug than BSR cells,as revealed by the respective IC50 values(12 lM for P815 and 52 lM for BSR cells).On another hand,and interestingly,apoptosis was induced in P815 but not induced in BSR.These data,reveal an interesting differential cytotoxic effect,suggesting the existence of different molecular interactions between artemisinin and the studied cell lines.In vivo,our results clearly showed that the oral administration of artemisinin inhibited solid tumor development.Our study demonstrates that artemisinin caused differential cytotoxic effects depending not only on the concentration and time of exposure but also on the target cells.

Study on outbreak of Neospora caninum-associated abortion in dairy cows in Tabriz (Northwest Iran) by serological,molecular and histopathologic methods

Objective:To determine Neospora caninum(N.caninum)as a cause of bovine abortion in dairy cows by ELISA,PCR and Pathological methods in Tabriz,Northwest of Iran.Methods:For study of outbreak of neosporosis,blood samples were collected from 76 Holstein aborted dairy cows in Tabriz(Northwest Iran).Antibodies to N.caninum were assayed by using a commercially ELISA kit(1DEXX,USA).IgG against N.caninum were found in 14(18.4%)cases,Aborted fetuses of these seropositive dams were proposed for histopathological and molecular investigations.Brains,spinal cords and placentas of the fetuses were fixed in 10%buffered formalin for histopathology.Also 5-10 g of brain tissue was sampled for DNA extraction.In 6 out of 14(42.8%)fetuses,brain tissue was positive in PCR.All dams of these fetuses were serologically seropositive in ELISA test,Results:Histopathologically,the lesions consistent with N.caninum were observed in brains,spinal cords and placenta of all fetuses.Lesions in CNS included severe congestion.perivascular and perineuronal edema,status spongiosis,perivascular cuffing,focal gliosis,nourophagy and focal necrosis.There were some Neospora-like cysts in brain.In placentas,severe congestion,perivascular infiltration of mononuclear cells,vascular thrombosis,focal placentitis and necrotic foci in cotyledons were noticed.Conclusions:The results of present study agreed the results of similar studies about serological,histopathological and molecular results of other studies about neosporosis and it seems lo support the outbreak of N.caninum-associated abortion in dairy cows in Tabriz(Northwest Iran).

Flood probability maps are essential for a range of applications,including land use planning and developing mitigation strategies and early warning systems.This study describes the potential application of two architectures of deep learning neural networks,namely convolutional neural networks(CNN)and recurrent neural networks(RNN),for spatially explicit prediction and mapping of flash flood probability.To develop and validate the predictive models,a geospatial database that contained records for the historical flood events and geo-environmental characteristics of the Golestan Province in northern Iran was constructed.The step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis(SWARA)was employed to investigate the spatial interplay between floods and different influencing factors.The CNN and RNN models were trained using the SWARA weights and validated using the receiver operating characteristics technique.The results showed that the CNN model(AUC=0.832,RMSE=0.144)performed slightly better than the RNN model(AUC=0.814,RMSE=0.181)in predicting future floods.Further,these models demonstrated an improved prediction of floods compared to previous studies that used different models in the same study area.This study showed that the spatially explicit deep learning neural network models are successful in capturing the heterogeneity of spatial patterns of flood probability in the Golestan Province,and the resulting probability maps can be used for the development of mitigation plans in response to the future floods.The general policy implication of our study suggests that design,implementation,and verification of flood early warning systems should be directed to approximately 40%of the land area characterized by high and very susceptibility to flooding.

Improving the accuracy of flood prediction and mapping is crucial for reducing damage resulting from flood events.In this study,we proposed and validated three ensemble models based on the Best First Decision Tree(BFT)and the Bagging(Bagging-BFT),Decorate(Bagging-BFT),and Random Subspace(RSS-BFT)ensemble learning techniques for an improved prediction of flood susceptibility in a spatially-explicit manner.A total number of 126 historical flood events from the Nghe An Province(Vietnam)were connected to a set of 10 flood influencing factors(slope,elevation,aspect,curvature,river density,distance from rivers,flow direction,geology,soil,and land use)for generating the training and validation datasets.The models were validated via several performance metrics that demonstrated the capability of all three ensemble models in elucidating the underlying pattern of flood occurrences within the research area and predicting the probability of future flood events.Based on the Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve(AUC),the ensemble Decorate-BFT model that achieved an AUC value of 0.989 was identified as the superior model over the RSS-BFT(AUC=0.982)and Bagging-BFT(AUC=0.967)models.A comparison between the performance of the models and the models previously reported in the literature confirmed that our ensemble models provided a reliable estimate of flood susceptibilities and their resulting susceptibility maps are trustful for flood early warning systems as well as development of mitigation plans.

In this paper,we developed highly accurate ensemble machine learning models integrating Reduced Error Pruning Tree(REPT)as a base classifier with the Bagging(B),Decorate(D),and Random Subspace(RSS)ensemble learning techniques for spatial prediction of rainfallinduced landslides in the Uttarkashi district,located in the Himalayan range,India.To do so,a total of 103 historical landslide events were linked to twelve conditioning factors for generating training and validation datasets.Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)and Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve(AUC)were used to evaluate the training and validation performances of the models.The results showed that the single REPT model and its derived ensembles provided a satisfactory accuracy for the prediction of landslides.The D-REPT model with RMSE=0.351 and AUC=0.907 was identified as the most accurate model,followed by RSS-REPT(RMSE=0.353 and AUC=0.898),B-REPT(RMSE=0.396 and AUC=0.876),and the single REPT model(RMSE=0.398 and AUC=0.836),respectively.The prominent ensemble models proposed and verified in this study provide engineers and modelers with insights for development of more advanced predictive models for different landslide-susceptible areas around the world.

Study of Initial Adhesion of a Bacterium to Different Support Materials before and after Conditioning Film of Olive Oil-Mill Wastewater

To improve the start-up speed and efficiency of bioreactors, biofilm technology is sometimes used. This technology uses various types of materials to facilitate the adhesion of microorganisms. In this study, the surface characteristics of inert substrates and substrates after olive oil-mill wastewater (OMWW) conditioning film were evaluated to understand the impact of OMWW on adhesion as well as the most suitable material to optimize bacterial adhesion. Three common substrates made of different polymers were tested for bacterial adhesion before and after treatment with OMWW: PP (polypropylene), PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The surfaces’ physicochemical characteristics were studied by measuring the contact angle for the studied bacteria strain and the supports, before and after treatment with OMWW. Results of initial adhesion tests for untreated and treated supports showed differences in how bacterial cells adhered to substrates. Before treatment with OMWW, PVC and then PP showed a significant adhesion capacity, double that of PET [PVC: 1.58 × 105 CFU/cm2, PP: 1.48 × 105 CFU/cm2 and PET: 0.72 × 10
