In Vitro assessment of the nutritive value of expanded soybean meal for dairy cattle

Little information is available about the nutritive value of expanded soybean meal, which is produced by expansion of soybeans prior to solvent extraction of the oil. During processing, expanded soybean meal is subjected to additional heat, which might increase the concentration of ruminally undegraded protein. Processing of soybeans with heat during oil extraction could affect lysine availability by increasing ruminally undegraded protein or by impairing intestinal digestion. Our objective was to compare solvent and expanded soybeans with regard to chemical composition and nutritive value for dairy cattle. Samples of expanded soybean meal （n = 14） and solventextracted soybean meal （n = 5） were obtained from People＇s Republic of China to study effects of the expansion process on nutritive value for dairy cattle. Solvent-extracted soybean meal （n = 2） and mechanically extracted （heated） soybean meal （n = 2） from the United States served as references for comparison. Samples were analyzed for crude fat, long-chain fatty acids, crude protein, amino acids, chemically available lysine, in situ ruminal protein degradation, and in vitro intestinal digestibility. No differences were found between solvent-extracted soybean meals from China and expanded soybean meals from China for crude fat, crude protein, amino acids, or chemically available lysine. In situ disappearance of nitrogen, ruminally undegraded protein content, and in vitro intestinal digestion of the ruminally undegraded protein were generally similar between solvent-extracted soybean meals made in China and expanded soybean meals made in China; variation among soybean meals was small. Results indicate that the additional heat from the expansion process was not great enough to affect the nutritive value of soybean meal protein for ruminants. Background and objective The safety of intravenous glycoproteinⅡb/Ⅲa inhibitors (GPI) in elderly patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of GPI in elderly patients with ACS. Methods Ninety consecutive patients≥70 years of age admitted to a county hospital between 1999-2004 were included. All patients had typical ACS symptoms along with high-risk markers. Results There was no difference in the TIMI risk score between patients who received GPI (n=47) and those who did not (n=43). Patients who received GPI had a lower creatinine clearance (40 cc/min vs. 47cc/min, p= 0.04). Patients who received GPI had a lower incidence of death, reinfarction or major bleeding (19% vs. 4%, p=0.03). There was no significant difference in major bleeding between the 2 groups. None of the patients in either group developed thrombocytopenia. Conclusion This retrospective small study suggests that the use of GPI in a selected group of elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome may be safe. (j Geriatr Cardiol 2005; 2(4):203-205 )

Objective The management of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is not well-defined in the *** therapy with 3-blockers and calcium-channel blockers are the mainstay therapy for symptomatic *** is usually reserved for patients who fail medical therapy. Alcohol septal ablation has been recently introduced as an alternative therapy. Patients and Methods Ninety-five patients older than 65 years of age were included. All patients have completed one year of follow-up. The mean age was 72 ± 5 years, 47 patients were females, 10 patients with history of hypertension. Results The mean rise in CK post alcohol ablation was 1052 ± 430IU. The mean NYHA class decreased from 2.9 ± 0.6 to 1.2 ± 0.5 ( P ＜ 0.001 ). The exercise duration on treadmill testing increased from 328 ± 260 s to 349 ± 39 s. The mean resting left ventricular outflow tract gradient decreased from 65 ± 37 mmHg to 16 ± 29 mmHg at one year. One patient died in the hospital after coronary artery bypass grafting that was done subsequent to spiral dissection of the left anterior descending artery during ablation. Thirteen patients developed complete heart block immediately after ablation requiring pacing therapy. Conclusions Alcohol septal ablation seems to be an effective alternative therapeutic option for elderly patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Larger studies with longer follow-up are needed.

In characterizing the chiral phase-structure of pseudoscalar(j^(pc) = 0^(-+)), scalar(j^(pc) = 0^(++)), vector(j^(pc) =1^(--)) and axial-vector(j^(pc) = 1^(++)t) meson states and their dependence on temperature, chemical potential, and magnetic field,we utilize the SU(3) Polyakov linear-sigma model(PLSM) in the mean-field approximation. We first determine the chiral(non)strange quark condensates,σ_l and σ_s, and the corresponding deconfinement order parameters, φ and φ~*, in thermal and dense(finite chemical potential) medium and finite magnetic field. The temperature and the chemical potential characteristics of nonet meson states normalized to the lowest bosonic Matsubara frequency are analyzed. We note that all normalized meson masses become temperature independent at different critical temperatures. We observe that the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions are shifted to lower quasicritical temperatures with increasing chemical potential and magnetic field. Thus, we conclude that the magnetic field seems to have almost the same effect as the chemical potential, especially on accelerating the phase transition, i.e. inverse magnetic catalysis. We also find that increasing the chemical potential enhances the mass degeneracy of the various meson masses, while increasing the magnetic field seems to reduce the critical chemical potential, at which the chiral phase transition takes place. Our mass spectrum calculations agree well with the recent PDG compilations and PNjL, lattice QCD calculations, and QMD/UrQMD simulations.

Design and Performance of PV Dust Cleaning System in Medina Region

This work aims to design a cleaning system for the solar PV panels under Medina climatic conditions. This system powered by the PV module itself. Full cleaning system has been designed and tested utilizing a wiper and water jet to remove the accumulated dust and other dirt from solar panels surface. The proposed cleaning system can be worked for long time efficiently. All the strength system components were examined and found to be stable and reliable. Also, the performance of cleaning system evaluated and comparison between the clean and dusty module performance has been conducted. The system performance has been evaluated for both clean and dusty panel at variable inputs of solar radiation. At input power of 805 W/m2, the efficiency found to be 13.78% for the cleaning panel and 9% for dusty panel, whereas at the input power of 460 W/m2, the estimated efficiency was 12.6% and 7.3% for clean and dusty panel respectively. Significant reduction in the efficiency has been reported as 35% and 42% for both cases. Therefore, the present work can be considering as a promising and efficient system to solve the problem of poor performance of the photovoltaic cells in areas that experience dusty environment and external pollutants. In addition, it is safe clean and economic system.
