Multiphysics simulation of VVER-1200 fuel performance during normal operating conditions

Nuclear fuel performance modeling and simulation are critical tasks for nuclear fuel design optimization and safety analysis under normal and transient *** performance is a complicated phenomenon that involves thermal,mechanical,and irradiation mechanisms and requires special multiphysics *** this study,a fuel performance model was developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics *** modeling was performed for a 2D axis-symmetric geometry of a UO2fuel pellet in the E110 clad for VVER-1200 *** modeling considers all relevant phenomena,including heat generation and conduction,gap heat transfer,elastic strain,mechanical contact,thermal expansion,grain growth,densification,fission gas generation and release,fission product swelling,gap/plenum pressure,and cladding thermal and irradiation *** model was validated using a code-to-code evaluation of the fuel pellet centerline and surface temperatures in the case of constant power,in addition to validation of fission gas release(FGR)*** prediction proved that the model could perform according to previously published VVER nuclear fuel performance parameters.A sensitivity study was also conducted to assess the effects of uncertainty on some of the model *** model was then used to predict the VVER-1200 fuel performance parameters as a function of burnup,including the temperature profiles,gap width,fission gas release,and plenum pressure.A compilation of related material and thermomechanical models was conducted and included in the modeling to allow the user to investigate different material/performance *** the model was developed for normal operating conditions,it can be modified to include off-normal operating conditions.

South Sinai includes Egypt’s highest mountains that resemble an ecological island surrounded by *** present study aims to analyse the vegetation physiognomy along the altitudinal and environmental gradients in the main wadi beds in South Sinai mountainous *** includes determining the natural,native-weed and alien vegetation in representative stands in this region,analysing their vegetation in terms of species composition,abundance and life forms and determining the national and global distribution of the associated *** investigation also aims to describe the prevailing plant communities and assess the role of environmental conditions that affect the vegetation in this ***,thirty-two stands were chosen during March-June 2018 to reflect the prevailing altitude and environmental *** species was 316(229 genera and 61 families):186 species were perennials(58.9%),while 130 were annuals(41.1%).In addition,152 species were native weeds(48.1%of total species),31 were aliens(9.8%),along with 133 natural species(42.1%).Eight species were recorded as endemic to Egypt:Anarrhinum pubescens,Euphorbia sanctae-catharinae,Hypericum sinaicum,Origanum syriacum ***,Phlomis aurea,Primula boveana,Rosa arabica and Solanum *** addition,10 species were recorded as near-endemics to Egypt and other adjacent countries:Allium desertorum,Asclepias sinaica,Centaurea scoparia,Fagonia mollis ***,Hyoscyamus boveanus,Iphiona mucronata,Micromeria sinaica,Pterocephalus sanctus,Salvia deserti and Stachys *** the present study,33 species are threatened and categorized as follows:8 endangered,8 vulnerable and one indeterminate,while the rest were evaluated by the authors as *** rich plant diversity of this region is due to its extensive mountainous massif,which supports many *** high elevations in this region hinder the dispersal process of propagules,a situation which often tends to increase endemic and ne

Evaluation of Bilateral Mental Nerve Block as an Alternative to General Anesthesia for Resection of Lower Lip Tumors

Objective: Nerve blockade is commonly used in oncosurgical procedures as an alternative to general anesthesia for older patients and those with significant medical problems. We report a single tertiary oncology center experience in performing various lip resections and reconstructive techniques using this technique. Patients and methods: sixty patients with lower lip tumors were enrolled into this study with exclusion of refusing, non-compliant and critically ill patients. A solution of 4 ml 2% Lidocaine and epinephrine was put in a 5 ml syringe. Half the solution (2 ml) was injected into each side with a 23 gauge needle and after 5 minutes the surgical resection was carried out after testing for anesthesia. Results: The mean age was 68 ± 6.2 years. The mean ASA score was 3 ± 0.75. There were 4 cases who expressed painful sensation and their operations were completed with fentanyl increments. Mean hospital stay was 1 ± 0.75 days. There were three cases of wound gaping who were treated with secondary closure in an outpatient basis. One patient expressed postoperative acute ischemic heart pain that was managed with anti-ischemic measurements. Conclusion: Bilateral mental nerve block is a safe and effective alternative to general anesthesia in lower lip tumors’ resection especially in older patients and those with poor tolerance for general anesthesia provided that there is no need for cervical nodal dissection.

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotype(GT) 4 represents 12%-15%(15-18 million) of total global HCV infection. It is prevalent in Northern and Equatorial Africa and the Middle East, and is also present in some countries in Europe. GT-4(and subtype 4a in particular) dominates the HCV epidemic in Egypt. In underdeveloped countries, risk factors associated with HCV infection may be due to unsafe medical practices or other factors such as familial transmission, mother's HCV status, or illiteracy. HCV prevention and control programs should include health education, increased community awareness towards the disease, controlling infection distribution in healthcare centers, proper sterilization of medical and dental instruments, and ensuring safe supply of blood and blood-products. Response rates to a 48-wk combined pegylated-interferon(PEG-IFN) and ribavirin(RBV) treatment range from 40%-69%, and HCV-GT-4 has been considered better than GT-1 but worse than GT-2 and GT-3 in treatment with PEG-IFN/RBV. However, with the introduction of the HCV-GT-1 effective protease inhibitors boceprevir and telaprevir in 2011, HCV-GT-4 became the "most difficult(GT) to treat". Recently, the direct-acting antivirals(DAAs) with pan- genotypic activities simeprevir, sofosbuvir, and daclatasvir have been recommended in triple regimens with PEG-IFN/RBV for the treatment of HCV-GT-4. An IFN-free regimen will be available for treatment of all genotypes of HCV in the near future. To date, several DAAs have been developed and are currently being evaluated in various combinations in clinical trials. As new regimens and new agents are being approved by the Food and Drug Administration, we can expect the guidelines for HCV treatment to be changed. The availability of shorter, simpler, and more tolerable treatment regimens can reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with HCV infection. With such a large number of therapeutic agents available, we can end up with a range of choices that we can select from
