Deformation-based support design for highly stressed ground with a focus on rockburst damage mitigation

As mines go deeper,mine designs become more fragile and effective rock support becomes a strategic element for ground control to facilitate timely construction and cost-effective access for uninterrupted *** article focuses on the design of integrated support systems for brittle ground when large displacements due to gradual bulking of stress-fractured rock or sudden violent bulking during rockbursts are induced by static and dynamic *** provides an overview of support design principles for a rational approach to ground control in deep mines when large deformations are anticipated near *** designs must not only account for load equilibrium but also for deformation *** importantly,the design approach must account for the fact that the support’s displacement capacity is being consumed as it is deformed after support *** is therefore necessary to design for the remnant support capacity,*** capacity remaining when the support is ***,if the support capacity can be consumed,it can also be restored by means of preventive support maintenance(PSM).The PSM concept for cost-effective ground control is introduced and illustrated by quantitative and operational *** to other design approaches,the deformation-based support design(DBSD)approach provides the capacity of an integrated support system as a function of imposed *** in this support capacity due to mininginduced deformation renders excavations increasingly more vulnerable if located within the influence of active mining and seismic *** deformation measurements are robust indicators of the decay in support capacity,scanning and other displacement monitoring technologies enable measurements to verify the DBSD approach,to assess the remnant safety margin of the deformed support,and to make operational support maintenance decisions.

With the increased availability of experimental measurements aiming at probing wind resources and wind turbine operations,machine learning(ML)models are poised to advance our understanding of the physics underpinning the interaction between the atmospheric boundary layer and wind turbine arrays,the generated wakes and their interactions,and wind energy ***,the majority of the existing ML models for predicting wind turbine wakes merely recreate Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulated data with analogous accuracy but reduced computational costs,thus providing surrogate models rather than enhanced data-enabled physics *** ML-based surrogate models are useful to overcome current limitations associated with the high computational costs of CFD models,using ML to unveil processes from experimental data or enhance modeling capabilities is deemed a potential research direction to *** this letter,we discuss recent achievements in the realm of ML modeling of wind turbine wakes and operations,along with new promising research strategies.

Endoscopic and clinical recurrence of Crohn’s disease (CD) is a common occurrence after surgical resection. Smokers, those with perforating disease, and those with myenteric plexitis are all at higher risk of recurrence. A number of medical therapies have been shown to reduce this risk in clinical trials. Metronidazole, thiopurines and anti-tumour necrosis factors (TNFs) are all effective in reducing the risk of endoscopic or clinical recurrence of CD. Since these are preventative agents, the benefits of prophylaxis need to be weighed-against the risk of adverse events from, and costs of, therapy. Patients who are high risk for post-operative recurrence should be considered for early medical prophylaxis with an anti-TNF. Patients who have few to no risk factors are likely best served by a three-month course of antibiotics followed by tailored therapy based on endoscopy at one year. Clinical recurrence rates are variable, and methods to stratify patients into high and low risk populations combined with prophylaxis tailored to endoscopic recurrence would be an effective strategy in treating these patients.

BACKGROUND Acute esophageal necrosis(AEN)is a rare condition that has been associated with low volume states,microvascular disease,gastrointestinal(GI)mucosal damage,and impaired GI *** has been linked in case reports with diabetic ketoacidosis(DKA)and is commonly associated with GI bleeding(GIB).CASE SUMMARY We report a case of endoscopy confirmed AEN as a complication of DKA in a 63-year-old Caucasian male without any overt GIB and a chief complaint of epigastric ***,there was no apparent trigger for DKA other than a newly started ketogenic diet two days prior to symptom onset.A possible potentiating factor for AEN beyond DKA is the recent start of a Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist(GLP-1 RA),though they have not been previously connected to DKA or *** patient was subsequently treated with high dose proton pump inhibitors,GLP-1 RA was discontinued,and an insulin regimen was *** patient’s symptoms improved over the course of several weeks following discharge and repeat endoscopy showed well healing esophageal *** This report highlights AEN in the absence of overt GIB,emphasizing the importance of early consideration of EGD.

Inflammatory bowel disease affects a substantial number of women in their reproductive years. Pregnancy presents a number of challenges for clinicians and patients; the health of the baby needs to be balanced with the need to maintain remission in the mother. Historically, treatments for Crohn’s disease (CD) were often discontinued during the pregnancy, or nursing period, due to concerns about teratogenicity. Fortunately, observational data has reported the relative safety of many agents used to treat CD, including 5-aminosalicylic acid, thiopurines, and tumor necrosis factor. Data on the long-term development outcomes of children exposed to these therapies in utero are still limited. It is most important that physicians educate the patient regarding the optimal time to conceive, discuss the possible risks, and together decide on the best management strategy.

Ex-situ cultivation of biological soil crusts （biocrusts） is a promising technology to produce materials that can induce the recovery of biocrusts in the field for the purposes of preventing soil erosion and improving hydrological function in degraded ecosystems. However, the ability of artificially cultivated biocrusts to survive under adverse field conditions, including drought and heat stresses, is still relatively unknown. mosses can bolster biocrust resistance to the stresses （e.g., drought and heat） and the resistance may be introduced prior to field cultivation. In this study, we subjected the well-developed artificial moss biocrusts （dominant species of Didjmodon vinealis （Brid.） Zand.） that we cultivated in the phytotron to a dehydration-rehydration experiment and also a heat stress experiment and measured the activities of protective enzymes （including peroxidase （POD）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, and catalase （CAT）） and the contents of osmoregulatory substances （including soluble proteins and soluble sugars） and malondialdehyde （MDA, an indicator of oxidative stress） in the stem and leaf fragments of mosses. The results showed that, during the dehydration process, the activities of protective enzymes and the contents of osmoregulatory substances and MDA gradually increased with increasing duration of drought stress （over 13 days）. During the rehydration process, values of these parameters decreased rapidly after 1 d of rehydration. The values then showed a gradual decrease for 5 days, approaching to the control levels. Under heat stress （45℃）, the activities of protective enzymes and the content of soluble proteins increased rapidly within 2 h of heat exposure and then decreased gradually with increasing duration of heat exposure. In contrast, the contents of soluble sugars and MDA always increased gradually with increasing duration of heat exposure.
