Early detection of neuropathy in leprosy:a comparison of five tests for field settings

Background:Early detection and treatment of neuropathy in leprosy is important to prevent disabilities.A recent study showed that the Nerve Conduction Studies(NCS)and Warm Detection Thresholds(WDT)tests can detect leprosy neuropathy the *** two tests are not practical under field conditions,however,because they require climate-controlled rooms and highly trained staff and are *** assessed the usefulness of alternative test methods and their sensitivity and specificity to detect neuropathy at an early ***:Through a literature search we identified five alternative devices that appeared user-friendly,more affordable,portable and/or battery-operated:the Neuropad^(■),Vibratip^(TM),NC-Stat^(■)DPNCheck^(TM),NeuroQuick and the Thermal Sensibility Tester(TST),assessing respectively sweat function,vibration sensation,nerve conduction,cold sensation and warm *** leprosy patients in Bangladesh,the posterior tibial and sural nerves that tested normal for the monofilament test and voluntary muscle test were assessed with the NCS and WDT as reference standard *** alternative devices were then tested on 94 nerves with abnormal WDT and/or NCS results and on 94 unaffected *** and specificity were the main ***:The NeuroQuick and the TST showed very good sensitivity and *** the sural nerve,the NeuroQuick had both a sensitivity and a specificity of 86%.The TST had a sensitivity of 83%and a specificity of 82%.Both the NC-Stat^(■)DPNCheck^(TM)and Vibratip^(TM)had a high specificity(88%and 100%),but a low sensitivity(16%and 0%).On the posterior tibial nerve,the NeuroQuick and the TST also showed good sensitivity,but the sensitivity was lower than for the sural *** Neuropad^(■)had a sensitivity of 56%and a specificity of 61%.Conclusions:The NeuroQuick and TST are good candidates for further field-testing for reliability and *** feasibility of production on a larger scale should be exami

Multivariate morphometric investigation to delineate species diversity and stock structure of mud crab Scylla sp. along the coastal regions of Bangladesh

Despite the importance of mud crab species(genus Scylla)in both coastal aquaculture and artisanal fisheries,knowledge of the species diversity and stock structure of mud crab population for their sustainable management across the coastal region of Bangladesh remains ***,the present study was conducted to delineate the diversity and stock structure of mud crab species based on the 24 morphometric length measurements and 27 morphometric ratios data collected from the three coastal regions(Chittagong,Cox’s Bazar and Bagerhat)of *** on the taxonomic keys,majority of the species(about 82.4%)were identified as ***,while the remaining(about 17.6%)was *** consistent to our preliminary analysis,both the univariate proportion and multivariate analysis of the collected morphometric lengths and ratios data also distinctly divided the mud crabs population into two multivariate spaces as *** and *** the further analysis of the stock structure of these two species,data were subjected to the univariate ANOVA,multivariate ANOVA,Canonical Variate Analysis(CVA),and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)according to their collection *** plots of CVA scores between CV1 and CV2 and PCA scores between PC1 and PC2 showed that the individuals of both species clearly made clusters into three multivariate spaces with minimum overlaps according to their collection *** morphometric traits Linear Discriminant Function Analysis(LDFA),the average percentage of correctly classified(PCC)into the original groups of the *** and *** was 100%.For stock discrimination,the average PCC into their original groups of collection sites were 100%and 99%for the *** and ***,***,dendrogram based on the Euclidean distances consistently separated *** and *** and stock structures similar to other multivariate *** conclusion,our study shows that *** is the dominant mud crab speci

Ultra violet radiation is detrimental to human skin and responsible for various skin diseases that is now worldwide growing concern for the people. Sun screen lotions, however, considered best possible solution but its temporary attachment didn’t bring the real impact. The advancement of nano technology provides a number of techniques to introduce UV protected fabric by applying certain semi conductor metal oxide. So many researches have been carried out to coat the fabric using certain nano particles namely ZnO and TiO2 to improve the UV absorption capacity of material as well as increasing UPF value to protect the human skin which have been playing a significant role to provide UV protected clothing. This paper deals with the harmful impact of ultra violet radiation on human skin, UPF measurement method and UV protective finishing on textile material using nano ZnO and nano TiO2 particle.

Sediment samples from the Gomti River basin were investigated to determine and evaluate trace metal concentrations,their biological effect,and potential ecological and human health risks for adults and *** mean concentrations of trace metals were organized in the descending order of mercury(Hg)(0.08 mg/kg)>chromium (Cr)(0.06 mg/kg)>lead (Pb)(0.05 mg/kg)>arsenic (As)(0.02 mg/kg)>cadmium (Cd)(0.01 mg/kg).The current study illustrated that metals were attributed to the area from natural sources and different anthropogenic sources especially from ***,the concentration levels were lower than the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) based on the effect-range classifications of threshold effect concentration (TEC) and probable effect concentration (PEC).Therefore,the concentration of the elements showed no adverse biological effects on aquatic *** evaluated potential ecological risk index also revealed the low toxicity to the aquatic ***,the applied sediment quality indices,geo-accumulation index (Igeo),contamination factor (CF),and contamination severity index (CSI) suggested that the contamination levels of the elements were in the acceptable range,and the contamination had not notably impacted on the sediment *** risk index (HI) concerning age groups was significantly less than the threshold limit of 1 indicating that the contamination had no non-carcinogenic risk *** total carcinogenic risk (TCR) was less than a risk value of 1×***,the current study suggests that immediate remediation is not required due to an absence of alarming conditions in the study *** monitoring of the attribution of the metal elements should be done for the betterment of human and environmental health.

A Novel Approach for Sugarcane Yield Prediction Using Landsat Time Series Imagery: A Case Study on Bundaberg Region

Quantifying sugarcane production is critical for a wide range of applications, including crop management and decision making processes such as harvesting, storage, and forward selling. This study explored a novel model for predicting sugarcane yield in Bundaberg region from time series Landsat data. From the freely available Landsat archive, 98 cloud free (st (2001-2015) were sourced for this study. The images were masked using the field boundary layer vector files of each year and the GNDVI was calculated. An analysis of average green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI) values from all sugarcane crops grown within the Bundaberg region over the 15 year period identified the beginning of April as the peak growth stage and, therefore, the optimum time for satellite image based yield forecasting. As the GNDVI is an indicator of crop vigor, the model derived maximum GNDVI was regressed against historical sugarcane yield data, which showed a significant correlation with R2 = 0.69 and RMSE = 4.2 t/ha. Results showed that the model derived maximum GNDVI from Landsat imagery would be a feasible and a modest technique to predict sugarcane yield in Bundaberg region.

Electrospinning and Electrospun Nanofibers

Electro-spinning is a very modern process which can be used in various purposes. We did this experimental work at Swerea IVF in Sweden during M. Sc in Textile Technology programme at University of Bor?s. We should especially thank our supervisor—Anna Thorvaldsson and course teacher—Ioannis S. Chronakis. In this report, we have tried to explain the basic manufacturing techniques of the electrospun nanofiber by the electro-spinning, how one can characterize it by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and its various applications in the practical field, e.g wound healing, Tissue Engineering Scaffold. The experimental work helped us a lot to gather sufficient knowledge about the electro-spinning process which we wanted to share with all.

Performance Evaluation of a miniPET Camera for Brain Scanning

A nuclear miniPET camera was constructed with 2 bucket rings, each having 8 BGO detector modules for brain scanning. After calibration of the camera, an experimental investigation of sensitivity was carried out to evaluate the performance of this PET scanner. The characteristics of NECR were examined for comparisons of count rate considering the statistical noise due to scattered and random events. NECR performance was observed using 10 cm diameter phantom filled with 1 L water and 240 MBq of 18F. All data were acquired in 2D acquisition mode but without septa. Randoms were estimated by introducing delay into the coincidence circuit which was an extra 100 ns time delay. Multiples were recorded simultaneously with the prompt and delayed events. The true plus scattered coincidence events were calculated as the difference between prompt and random plus multiple events. After recording all the data, the noise equivalent count rate (NECR) was calculated and graphically presented. It is observed that NEC value is significantly lower than other similar scanners. Comparing the individual components of the count rate, a much higher randoms rate is observed for the camera because of the absence of any side shielding, so that out of field activity contributes significantly to the randoms rate and hence reduces the NECR value.

Analysis of the Incidence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and Association with Socio-Economic Factors in Various Regions in China

The incidence of liver cancer in China accounts for more than half of the world, and the majority of them is caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C. China is known as a great contributor to hepatitis. The Chinese government has implemented a series of preventive measures to solve this problem, especially the policy of free hepatitis B vaccination for newborn babies and effectively reduced the incidence of hepatitis. The incidence of infectious diseases is often related to socio-economic factors. Therefore, we used data on the incidence of hepatitis B and C and socioeconomic factors to analyze and find out the relationship among them in various regions. There were high incidence areas and low incidence areas in China, and the high incidence area of hepatitis B was also the high incidence area of hepatitis C. Especially in Xinjiang, the highest incidence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C was observed at the same time. The incidence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C was more affected by regional economic factors. The economic factors in low incidence areas of hepatitis were better than those in high incidence areas. There was a negative correlation between economic factors and the incidence of hepatitis. In conclusion, in economically developed areas, the government has invested more money and resources in public health and people’s health awareness in comparison to underdeveloped areas. In the future, various preventive strategies should be carried out according to the background of different regions.

Identifying Factors of Obesity in Papua New Guinea: A Descriptive Study

Obesity and overweight are complex phenomena due to causes and consequences as these are the predisposing factors for developing lifestyle-related diseases. In the recent times, obesity and chronic diseases are being taken very seriously than ever before. Once upon a time, obesity was considered as a problem only in developed countries, now it is of a serious concern in low- and middle-income countries. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), a few studies have been conducted on obesity-related issues. However, there is not enough data on obesity to clearly understand about the leading contributing factors. Our research group designed this study to assess the influencing factors of obesity and as well as to identify the principal cause. It is a descriptive study, used structured and semi-structured interview and survey questionnaire. This study was conducted in the capital city of PNG, Port Moresby, and recruited 87 adults aged 30 - 50 years. According to interview and analysis findings, the contributing factors of obesity are less physical movement, unhealthy diet, lifestyle, cultural value system, low education and social system. Government strategies and initiatives are not strong enough to educate and motivate the community people. This study suggests developing an effective coordination among all stakeholders to ensure quality education and increase awareness to prevent obesity and its complications. The standard health policies and strategies are also recommended at the local, national and international level with strong commitment.

Health Resource Utilization and Comorbidities in Patients with Mental Disorders: Analysis Based on Health Insurance Claim Data

The number of patients with mental disorders is increasing all over the world and they have a high prevalence of physical complications. To analyze and compare the cost of mental disorders with the total medical costs such as mental disorders and physical disorders, we analyzed the cost that patients with mental disorders incurred. We investigated the distribution of medical costs and the characteristics of diseases by using the health insurance claims of people in City A, Japan from March 2013 to February 2014. The subjects had one or more of 4 mental disorders: schizophrenia, alcohol related disorders, bipolar disorder, and depressive episode. As a result, the total number of patients who met inclusion criteria per year was 7403 (6522 outpatients and 881 inpatients). It was revealed that the hospitalization rate of patients with mental disorders increased with age, and many inpatients stayed in hospital for a long time. Also, it was revealed that many patients with mental disorders were in complicated condition with more than one mental or physical disorders and incurred medical costs for these comorbidities. In conclusion, this analysis indicated that many patients with mental disorders switch from attending the outpatient department to hospitalization as they become older. Further, they incurred a lot of medical expenses for complication management. To improve their QOL, comprehensive assessment of their mental/ physical health, self-management education, coordination of services, and support for decision making regarding treatment are necessary.
