Stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS)in optical fibers has long been used in frequency-selective optical signal processing,including in the realization of microwave-photonic(MWP)*** this work,we report a significant enhancement in the selectivity of SBS-based MWP *** having a single passband of 250 MHz–1 GHz bandwidth are demonstrated,with selectivity of up to 44 *** selectivity of the filters is better than that of the corresponding previous arrangements by about 15 *** shape factor of the filters,defined as the ratio between their−20 dB bandwidth and their−3 dB bandwidth,is between 1.35 and *** central transmission frequency,bandwidth,and spectral shape of the passband are all independently *** enhancement is based on two advances,compared with previous demonstrations of tunable SBS-basedMWPfilters:(a)the polarization attributes of SBS in standard,weakly birefringent fibers are used to discriminate between in-band and out-of-band components and(b)a sharp and uniform power spectral density of the SBS pump waves is synthesized through external modulation of an optical carrier by broadband,frequency-swept *** signal-to-noise ratio of filtered radio-frequency waveforms and the linear dynamic range of the filters are estimated analytically and quantified ***,a figure of merit for the performance of the filters is proposed and *** filters are applicable to radio-over-fiber transmission systems.

We consider an oscillator with a random mass for which the particles of the surrounding medium adhere to the oscillator for some random time after the collision (Brownian motion with adhesion). This is another form of a stochastic oscillator, different from oscillator usually studied that is subject to a random force or having random frequency or random damping. We calculated first two moments for different form of a random force, and studied different resonance phenomena (stochastic resonance, vibration resonance and “erratic” behavior) interposed between order and chaos.

We illustrate the influence of an external periodic force and noise on a physical system by the example of an oscillator. These two forces seem to be the reverse of each other, since the latter leads to disorder while the former works in an orderly fashion. Nevertheless, it is shown that they may influence a system in a similar way, sometime even substituting for one another. These examples serve to illustrate one of the main achievements of twentieth-century physics, which has established that deterministic and random phenomena complement rather than contradict each other.

Raman Spectra in Irradiated Graphene: Line Broadening, Effects of Aging and Annealing

The results of measurements of the Raman spectra in the same group of monolayer graphene samples, successively subjected to irradiation with different ions, prolonged aging, and annealing under different conditions, are considered. Changes in the position, width, and intensity of the Raman lines are analyzed in the study of the following problems: comparison of the results of irradiation with various ions, the influence of prolonged aging on the spectra of irradiated samples, the mechanism of broadening of Raman scattering lines caused by an increase in the density of radiation defects, the consequences of annealing of radiation damages in vacuum and in the atmosphere of the forming gas, the contribution of doping and lattice deformation to the shift of the position of the Raman lines after annealing. The results obtained made it possible to determine the level of stability of defects introduced by radiation, to reveal the possibility of restoring the damaged lattice using annealing. Since the results relate to graphene deposited on a widely used SiO2/Si substrate, they may be of interest when using ion irradiation to change the properties of graphene in appropriate devices.

We calculate the core-hole spectral density in a pristine graphene, where the density of states of itinerant electrons goes linearly to zero at the Fermi level. We consider explicitly two models of electron-hole interaction. In the unscreened Coulomb interaction model, the spectral density is similar to that in metal (for local interaction). Thus there is no δ-function singularity in the core-hole spectral density. In the local interaction model, the δ-function singularity survives, but the interaction leads to the appearance of the background in the spectral density.
