Validation of a Swahili version of the World Health Organization 5-item well-being index among adults living with HIV and epilepsy in rural coastal kenya

Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the World Health Organization’s five item well-being index(WHO-5)when administered to adults living with HIV or epilepsy in a rural setting at the coast of ***:A case control study design was conducted among 230 adults aged 18-50 years,who comprised 147 cases(63 living with epilepsy and 84 living with HIV)and 83 healthy *** participants were administered to a faceto-face interview during which they completed the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index,the Major Depression Inventory(MDI)and responded to some items on their socio-demographic *** to assess internal consistency,construct validity,discriminant validity,and convergent validity of the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index was conducted.A multivariate regression was carried out to assess the association between psychological wellbeing(assessed using Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index)and having a chronic illness(HIV or epilepsy).Results:The Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index demonstrated good internal consistency with Cronbach alpha ranges of 0.86-0.88 among the three study *** tool had good discriminant validity.A one factor structure of the tool was obtained from confirmatory factor analysis(overall Comparative Fit Index=1.00,Tuckler Lewis Index=1.01,Root Mean Square of Error Approximation=0.00).Living with HIV or epilepsy in comparison to being a healthy control was significantly associated with greater odds of having sub-optimal psychological ***:Our findings demonstrate that the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index has good psychometric properties and is appropriate for use to evaluate psychological well-being among adults living with chronic conditions such as HIV or epilepsy from a rural low resource setting in *** its brevity and ease of use,the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index could potentially be used by lay wor

Nanoencapsulation of Thymol and Eugenol with Chitosan Nanoparticles and the Effect against <i>Ralstonia solanacearum</i>

Essential oils (EOs) are natural bioactive compounds with antibacterial activity against a variety of microorganisms including phytopathogens. The use of EOs and their components as viable therapeutic antibacterials is however greatly compromised by their volatile nature, hydrophobicity and instability when exposed to environmental and physiological factors. Encapsulation of these compounds in an appropriate carrier system can alleviate these challenges. This study therefore aimed at developing, characterizing and evaluating the efficacy of antibacterial potential of thymol and eugenol loaded chitosan nanoparticles (TCNPs and ECNPs) against Ralstonia solanacearum, the bacterial wilt-causing pathogen in potatoes. Synthesis of TCNP and ECNP was achieved via ionic gelation method and the prepared nanoparticles characterized by their particle size distributions, encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity (LC) and in-vitro release characteristics. Antibacterial activities of the nanoparticles were investigated using agar dilution and colony counting methods and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determined by 96-well broth micro-dilution method. Scanning electron microscope images of TCNPs and ECNPs showed that the nanoparticles were spherical in shape and were well separated with an average particle size of 590 nm and 555 nm respectively. The average size of chitosan nanoparticles alone was however 375 nm. The encapsulation efficiency was 72.9% for TCNP (with 48.3% LC) and 71.7% for ECNP (with 49.5% LC). The release of thymol and eugenol from the microcapsules was found to be pH dependent with the highest release at pH 1.5. The growth inhibition of R. solanacearum was 92% and 94% for TCNP and ECNPs respectively. The MIC of thymol and eugenol before encapsulation was 175 μg/ml and 275 μg/ml respectively, but this reduced significantly to 22.5 μg/ml and 45 μg/ml after encapsulation. Investigations of the Sheath Effect on the Resultant Magnetic Field of a Cylindrical Monopole Plasma Antenna

The functionality of the plasma antenna has been narrowed to types and brand names only. The physics of its operation has been neglected and has stagnated technological innovations. The magnetic field in the sheath and plasma were investigated. Notable specifications were worked out in the proposed improved cylindrical monopole plasma antenna. The occurrence of femto spin demagnetization was discovered between the duration of switch on and switch off of the antenna. This phenomenon seems transient because magnetization is highest at the switch on/off point.

CFD simulation of solid-liquid stirred tanks for low to dense solid loading systems

The hydrodynamics of suspension of solids in liquids are critical to the design and performance of stirred tanks as mixing systems. Modelling a multiphase stirred tank at a high solids concentration is complex owing to particle-particle and particle-wall interactions which are generally neglected at low concentra- tions. Most models do not consider such interactions and deviate significantly from experimental data. Furthermore, drag force, turbulence and turbulent dispersion play a crucial role and need to be precisely known in predicting local hydrodynamics. Therefore, critical factors such as the modelling approach, drag, dispersion, coefficient of restitution and turbulence are examined and discussed exhaustively in this paper. The Euler-Euler approach with kinetic theory of granular flow, Syamlal-O＇Brien drag model and Reynolds stress turbulence model provide realistic predictions for such systems. The contribution of the turbulent dispersion force in improving the prediction is marginal but cannot be neglected at low solids volume fractions. Inferences drawn from the study and the finalised models will be instrumen- tal in accurately simulating the solids suspension in stirred tanks for a wide range of conditions. These models can be used in simulations to obtain precise results needed for an in-depth understanding of hydrodynamics in stirred tanks.

Thermal bleaching of optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra of γ-irradiated CaF_2:Dy:Pb:Na single crystals

The variation of the optical absorption (OA) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra with temperature was studied on γ-irradiated CaF2:Dy:Pb:Na single crystals. The OA spectrum showed bands around 2.05, 3.20, 3.82 and 6.20 eV which could be attributed to different sodium associated (SA) colour centres (CCs) such as MNa and RA+ . Thermoluminescence studies on γ-irradiated CaF_2:Dy:Pb:Na single crystals

Therrnoluminescence （TL） glow, thermoluminescence emission （TLE） and thermal decay （TD） of optical absorption （OA） bands were studied on γ-irradiated CaF2：Dy （0.010at.%）：Pb （0.188at.%）：Na （0.026at.%） single crystals （hereafter called crystal-I）. The TL glow exhibited four glow peaks in the temperature region 300-500 k. The TL response with dose was studied up to -7.5 kGy. The total glow showed linear, supra linear and exponential growth with dose. The TLE showed bands characteristic of Dy^3＋ ions （around 1.65, 1.87, 2.18 and 2.63 eV） and sodium associated （SA） colour centres （CCs） such as MNa （around 1.67 eV） and XNa （a new SA CC, with an emission band around 2.63 eV）. The OA bands of MNa CC around 3.23 and 2.07 eV were found to decrease with temperature almost in accordance with the TL glow. The R＋A centre absorption around 2.48 eV was found to grow with temperature initially and then decayed. The formation/growth of the CCs R＋A and XNa might be from the conversion of the irradiation produced CC MNa. An attempt was made to explain the TL mechanism in the present system.

Suitability mapping for rice cultivation in Benue State,Nigeria using satellite data Fanan Ujoh

With rising population,decline in soil productivity and land-based conflicts,the per-capita land availability for cultivation is rapidly decreasing within Benue State,a largely agrarian and small-holder *** study attempts a local-level support for the actualisation of Sustainable Development Goal Number 2(“end hunger,achieve food security and improved nutrition,and promote sustainable agriculture”)by *** Multi-Criteria Decision Making(MCDM)method,remote sensing data from Climate Research Unit(CRU)and in-situ data from Nigeria Meteorological Agency(NIMET)were analyzed by GIS techniques to map the suitability of rice cultivation in the study area,with the integration of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI),land cover,slope,temperature,precipitation and soil parameters(cation exchange capacity,pH,bulk density,organic carbon).We apply the various statistical parameters that include mean spatial NDVI;correlation coefficient,standard deviation and Root Mean Square(RMS)between CRU and NIMET *** regression trend analysis is conducted between CRU precipitation and NDVI and between CRU temperature and NDVI from 1985 to *** results reveal that NDVI in highly suitable rice planting regions is higher than marginally suitable regions except in the months of October and November,which shows that the highly suitable regions will yield better than the marginally suitable regions during the dry ***,NDVI is seasonally bimodal in response to precipitation,meaning that vegetation vigor is more dependent on precipitation than ***,the correlation coefficient,standard deviation and RMS between CRU and NIMET precipitation data shows 0.42,108,and 110,respectively,while these three factors between CRU and NIMET temperature data shows 0.88,1.60,and 0.86,*** conclusion,the MCDM approach reveals that upland is more suitable for rice cultivation in Benue State when comparing with the area provided by the Global Land
