Congenital peritoneal encapsulation: A review and novel classification system

Congenital peritoneal encapsulation(CPE) is a very rare, congenital condition characterised by the presence of an accessory peritoneal membrane which encases a variable extent of the small bowel. It is unclear how CPE develops,however it is currently understood to be a result of an aberrant adhesion in the peritoneal lining of the physiological hernia in foetal mid-gut development. The condition was first described in 1868, and subsequently there have been only 45 case reports of the phenomenon. No formal, systematised review of CPE has yet been performed, meaning the condition remains poorly understood,underdiagnosed and mismanaged. Diagnosis of CPE remains clinical with important adjuncts provided by imaging and diagnostic laparoscopy. Two thirds of patients present with abdominal pain, likely secondary to sub-acute bowel obstruction. A fixed, asymmetrical distension of the abdomen and differential consistency on abdominal palpation are more specific clinical features present in approximately 10% of cases. CPE is virtually undetectable on plain imaging, and is only detected on 40% of patients with computed tomography scan. Most patients will undergo diagnostic laparotomy to confirm the *** of CPE includes both medical management of the critically-unstable patient and surgical laparotomy, partial peritonectomy and *** following prompt surgical treatment is excellent, with a majority of patients being symptom free at follow up. This review summarises the current literature on the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease. We also introduce a novel classification system for encapsulating bowel diseases, which may distinguish CPE from the commoner, more morbid conditions of abdominal cocoon and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.

The charge isomer fraction(PI 5.9) of the Cu. Zn SOD from duck red blood cell has been crystallized around neutral pH and low ionic strength at 297°*** crystals belong to the trigonel space group P3221, with unit cell a=125.1,c=163.3 and γ=120°. The duck SOD shows a novel packing arrangement consisting of supramolecular double-helix, with 922/972 non-crystallographic border group symmetry in the crystal.

Surface Degradation of Bulk AlN+Al Nano-composites

Bulk AIN + Al nanocomposite materials were synthesized by sintering the compacts of AIN and Al nanoparticles, which were produced by an active plasma-metal reaction method. The surfaces of as-prepared nanocomposite was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results show the surfaces are much degraded and the degradation products are alumina(Al2O3), boehmite(AlOOH), bayerite(AI(OH)(3)) layer. The mechanism of degradation behaviour in moist environment was also discussed.

Occurrence of manglicolous lichens in Calabarzon,Philippines

Various species of mangrove trees thrive in the mangrove forests of Calabarzon,Philippines including species of Avicennia marina,Rhizophora mucronata,and Rhizophora apiculata,which house various lichen species but very little available information on the diversity of these epiphytes is known.A survey of 90 decaying mangrove woods from 3 mangrove sites in Calabarzon including Laiya Batangas,Tanza Cavite and Pagbilao Quezon recorded a total of 40 lichen species classified under 25 genera and 14 *** apiculata(bakawang lalaki)was found the most preferred lichen establishment host as it housed 23 lichen species followed by Rhizophora mucronata(bakawang babae)with 17 lichen species and Avicenia marina with 7 lichen *** that belong to family Arthoniaceae,Caliciaceae,Parmeliaceae,Collemataceae,and Graphidaceae were the highest *** of these manglicolous lichens were classified as crustose(60%)and foliose(40%)*** of these manglicolous lichens identified,29 species were found to be new records of lichens in the Philippines.

For too long Earth Science has been the poor relative to Natural Sciences when it comes to conservation, preservation and public promotion. Today, however, in 25 territories across Europe, a combination of Earth Scientists, economists, professional marketers and local people are working together to promote the geological heritage of their areas. These European Geoparks not only advance the protection of their geological heritage but they also use it, in a truly sustainable way, to promote the economic well-being of the people who live there. With the full endorsement of UNESCO, this concept of geoparks is spreading to other parts of the world and is rapidly developing into a global concept. This article looks in detail at the geopark idea - exactly what geoparks are, how they function, and what benefits they can bring both to geology and to the public.

Planning for Community Relocations Due to Climate Change in Fiji

As a consequence of the impacts of climate change, some households and entire communities across the Pacific are making the complex and challenging decision to leave their homelands and relocate to new environments that can sustain their livelihoods. This short article charts how the residents of Vunidogoloa village in Fiji relocated in early 2014 to reduce their vulnerability to encroaching sea level and inundation events that regularly devastated the community. As a consequence of the Vunidogoloa relocation, this article also explores how the Fiji Government is planning for similar resettlement transitions, including vulnerability and adaptation assessments to develop a list of potential community relocations and the development of national relocation guidelines. This study draws from key informant interviews(n = 8) with government officials, as well as representatives from intergovernmental and local nongovernmental organizations,who are involved in the relocation issue. Given the speed at which these national, top-down initiatives are being forged and especially in light of the absence of any mention of relocation in Fiji’s 2012 climate change policy, careful and inclusive engagement across all scales and stakeholders,including communities 'earmarked' for relocation, is paramount.
