Development of a Hybrid Best Management Practice System for Control of Agricultural Nonpoint Water Pollution

Agricultural drainage ditches play an important role in removing surplus water;however, these can also potentially act as major conduits of agricultural nonpoint source pollutants, including sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus. A supplementary hybrid system to limit such pollution was developed in this study;this consists of biodegradable fiber check dams, used in combination with a synthetic polymer (Polyacrylamide, PAM). An open channel experiment was conducted to optimize the design of the hybrid system, taking into account a variety of physical and hydraulic conditions. Subsequent field application of the hybrid system improved runoff water quality, such as 10.0% to 98.3% reduction for suspended solids, 25.2% to 98.4% reduction for turbidity, 21.1% to 91.1% increase for BOD, 19.2% to 75.4% increase for COD, 21.0% to 73.3% reduction for T-N, 5.9% to 91.2% reduction for T-P and 35.7% to 97.6% reduction for fecal coliforms. This clearly showed that this hybrid system could play a significant role in supplementing conventional best management practices.

Pt-Ni alloy nanocrystals with Pt-enriched shells were prepared by selective etching of surface Ni using sulfuric acid and *** changes in the electronic and geometric structure of the alloy nanoparticles at the surface were elucidated from the electrochemical surface area,the potential of zero total charge(PZTC),and relative surface roughness,which were determined from CO-and CO_(2)-displacement experiments before and after 3000 potential cycles under oxygen reduction reaction *** the highest activity and durability were achieved in hydroquinone-treated Pt–Ni,sulfuric acidtreated one showed the lower activity and durability despite its higher surface Pt concentration and alloying *** PZTC and QCO_(2)/QCO ratio(desorption charge of reductively adsorbed CO_(2) normalized by COad-stripping charge)depend on surface *** particular,QCO_(2)/QCO ratio change better reflects the roughness on an atomic scale,and PZTC is also affected by the electronic modification of Pt atoms in surface *** this study,a comparative study is presented to find a relationship between surface structure and electrochemical properties,which reveals that surface roughness plays a critical role to improve the electrochemical performance of Pt-Ni alloy catalysts with Pt-rich surfaces.

Dirac Coupled Channel Analyses of Proton Inelastic Scatterings from s-d Shell Nuclei

Proton inelastic scatterings from several s-d shell nuclei are analyzed using optical potential model and collective model in Dirac coupled channel formalism. The optical potential parameters obtained phenomenologically for the scatterings from the s-d shell nuclei are compared with each other for systematic Dirac analysis. Dirac equations are reduced to the second-order differential equations in order to obtain the Schroedinger equivalent effective central and spin-orbit optical potentials, and the surface-peaked phenomena are observed at the real effective central potentials for the scatterings from 22Ne, 20Ne and 24Mg. By analyzing the obtained effective spin-orbit potentials, it is confirmed that the spin-orbit interaction is a surface-peaked interaction. The first-order rotational collective models are used to describe the low-lying excited states of the ground state rotational bands in the s-d shell deformed nuclei, and the obtained deformation parameters are analyzed by comparing with each other, and compared with those obtained by using the nonrelativistic calculations. The obtained deformation parameters of Dirac phenomenological calculations for the s-d shell nuclei are found to agree pretty well with those of the nonrelativistic calculations using the same Woods-Saxon potential shape, even though the theoretical bases are quite different.

Background: Single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) is a widely performed advanced technique in laparoscopic surgery which has many benefits compare to conventional three port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (TPLC). The purpose of this study was to compare the patients’ satisfaction of SPLC and TPLC after one year of operation by using questionnaire which not only objective factors such as results of operation and hospital days but also subjective factor such as social and cosmetic quality of life. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed the data of 74 patients (SPLC = 42, TPLC = 32) who underwent the laparoscopic cholecystectomy between March and July 2013. The patients were asked to complete a patient-assessment questionnaire measuring the postoperative social and cosmetic quality-of-life values at the 12-month mark. Results: Statistically significant differences in the age, sex distribution, and body mass index are absent between the two groups. All the average scores of the different parameters of the social-activity aspect—satisfaction with physical condition, limitation of nutrition, stamina, postoperative pain level, returning to social life, impairment of social life, degree of complications, and cost-effectiveness of the surgery—are not statistically significant in both groups. Alternatively, all the results of the cosmetic aspect—scar influence on charms (p p = 0.015), and patient’s score of scars (p < 0.001)—show statistically significant differences. Conclusion: The SPLC is a safe and an attractive approach regarding the patients of this study. It offers a more effective cosmetic result that may be conveyed by a greater patient satisfaction.

Finite difference type preconditioners for spectral element discretizations based on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto points are analyzed. The latter is employed for the approximation of uniformly elliptic partial differential problems. In this work, it is shown that the condition number of the resulting preconditioned system is bounded independently of both of the polynomial degrees used in the spectral element method and the element sizes. Several numerical tests verify the h-p independence of the proposed preconditioning.

In the automotive electronics industry, demand for low-cost, high strength-to in-service performance for electronic components continues to drive the development of vehicles’ door Wiring Harness (W/H) system for new applications. The problem of the fatigue strength estimation of materials or components containing natural defects, inclusions or in homogeneities is of great importance from both a scientific and industrial point of view. This article gives some insight into the dimensioning process, with special focusing on fatigue analysis of W/H in a vehicle’s door structures. An en-durance life prediction of door W/H was calculated using finite element analyses. Endurance test data for slim test specimens were compared with the predicted fatigue life for verification. The final life expectancy of the component combines the effects of these microstructural features with the complex stress state arising from the combined service loading and residual stresses.
