Objective: To investigate the antibacterial activity of SHHextracted with either water or ethanol against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) and combinatory antimicrobial effect with ciprofloxacin(CIP) by time kill assay and checkerboard dilution test. Methods: The antibacterial activity determined by broth dilution method indicated that the antibacterial activity of Sami-Hyanglyun-Hwan(SHH) water extract(SHHW) and SHH ethanol extract(SHHE) ranged from 250 to 2000 μg/m L and 125 to 1000 μg/m L against MRSA, respectively. Results: In the checkerboard method, the combinations of SHHE with CIP had a partial synergistic or synergistic effect against MRSA. The time-kill curves showed that a combined SHHE and CIP treatment reduced the bacterial counts dramatically after 24 h. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates the therapeutic ability of SHHE against MRSA infections.

To gain beneficial effects in the management of high-risk prostate cancer, an integrated approach that combines local therapy and androgen deprivation therapy （ADT） was used. We compared biochemical responses between primary cryosurgical ablation of the prostate （CSAP） combined with prolonged ADT and radiation combined with ADT, which is the established modality in high-risk disease. A total of 33 high-risk patients received CSAP combined with ADT for 3 months before and up to 24 months after treatment. This patient group was matched with another 33 patients who had undergone three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy （3D-CRT） with the same protocol for ADT. Biochemical recurrence （BCR） was assessed by the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology （ASTRO） definition, the Phoenix definition and a prostate-specific antigen （PSA） cutoff of 0.5 ng mL^-1. Median follow-up was 61.0 ± 11.9 months for the CSAP ＋ ADT group and 86.0±15.8 months for the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group. In the CSAP group, major complications including rectourethral fistula and incontinence were not noted. In the CSAP ＋ ADT group, 57.0% had BCR using the ASTRO definition, 21.2% using the Phoenix definition and 54.5% using a PSA cutoff of 0.5 ng mL^-1. In the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group, 54.5%, 21.2% and 54.5% had BCR using the ASTRO, Phoenix and PSA definition, respectively. In the CSAP ＋ ADT group, the BCR-free survival （BRFS） was 54 ± 10 months using the ASTRO definition, 65 ± 5 months using the Phoenix definition and 51 ± 4 months using a PSA cutoff of 0.5 ng mL-1. In the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group, the BRFS was 68 ± 12, 93 ± 19 and 70 ± 18 months using the ASTRO, Phoenix and PSA definition, respectively. By the log-rank test, the BRFS values for each group were not statistically different. This intermediate-term result indicated that primary CSAP combined with prolonged ADT offers a parallel biochemical response compared with radiotherapy in high-risk prostate cancer.

Objectives： Chunghyuldan （CHD）, a combinatorial drug that has anti-hyperlipidemic and anti inflammatory activities, has been shown to reduce infarct volume in a focal ischemia-reperfusion rat model. To explore the molecular basis of CHD＇s neuroprotective effect, we examined whether CHD shows a cell-protective activity and has a regulatory effect on Bax and/or B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 （Bcl-2） expression in mouse neuroblastoma 2a （N2a） cells subjected to hypoxia-reoxygenation （H/R）. Methods： In order to evaluate the effects of CHD on the cytotoxicity induced from hypoxia or H/R condition, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） assay was performed. To explore whether the suppression of neural damage when pre-treated with CHD is associated with its anti-apoptotic effect, the CHD effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was analyzed by Western blotting analysis. Results： Cytotoxicity of N2a cell line was slightly increased in 42 h hypoxia condition and dramatically increased under the H/R condition. CHD treatment markedly decreased the cytotoxicity in both conditions （P〈0.01, P〈0.05）. H/R markedly increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax, but slightly increased the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, compared with the normoxia or hypoxia group. CHD significantly decreased Bax expression （P〈0.01） and slightly decreased Bcl-2 expression （P〉0.05）, resulted in a reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in N2a cells subjected to H/R. Conclusion： CHD has neuroprotective effect in N2a cells subjected to H/R, which might be derived at least in part from its ability to decrease the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax.

＜正＞ In order to realize a metal containing nano-structure, a block-copolymer containing alkynyl groups in one block was designed and synthesized by living ring opening metathesis polymerization （ROMP） technique. The newly developed bis-3-bromopyridine complex of Crubbs catalyst was employed in the series of polymerixation and it yielded the desired polymers with great molecular weight control and narrow polydispersities. The characteristics of the block copolymers were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, H- and 13H- NMR spectroscopy. Complexation of the alkynyl group containing block copolymers by treatment with dicobalt octacarbonyl occurred smoothly in 5 min at room temperature. GPC analysis before and after cobalt complexation indicated a significant increase of the hydrodynamic volume. AFM images of the films before and after the complexation also showed a noticeable change in its morphology where grain sizes become smaller and more regular upon complexation.

AIM To determine the gastric adenocarcinoma(GAC)occurrence rate and related factors,we evaluated the follow-up results of patients confirmed to have gastric dysplasia after endoscopic resection(ER).METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the medical records,endoscopic examination records,endoscopic procedure records,and histological records of 667 cases from641 patients who were followed-up for at least 12mo,from among 1273 patients who were conformed to have gastric dysplasia after Endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)of gastric mucosal lesions between January 2007and August 2013 at the Chungnam National University *** The mean follow-up period was 33.8 mo,and the median follow-up period was 29 mo(range:12-87).During the follow-up period,the occurrence of metachronous GAC was 4.0%(27/667).The mean and median interval periods between the occurrence of metachronous GAC and endoscopic treatment of gastric dysplasia were 36.3 and 34 mo,respectively(range:16-71).The factors related to metachronous GAC occurrence after ER for gastric dysplasia were male sex(5.3%vs 1.0%),open-type atrophic gastritis(9.5%vs3.4%),intestinal metaplasia(6.8%vs 2.4%),and highgrade dysplasia(HGD;8.4%vs 3.2%).Among them,male sex[OR:5.05(1.18-21.68),P=0.029],intestinal metaplasia[OR:2.78(1.24-6.23),P=0.013],and HGD[OR:2.70(1.16-6.26),P=0.021]were independent related factors in multivariate ***,24of 27 GAC cases(88.9%)occurred at sites other than the previous resection sites,and 3(11.1%)occurred at the same site as the previous resection *** Male sex,intestinal metaplasia,and HGD were significantly related to the occurrence of metachronous GAC after ER of gastric dysplasia,and most GACs occurred at sites other than the previous resection sites.

Transforming growth factor-β1 （TGF-β1） has been identified as one of the most important fibrogenic cytokines associated with Peyronie＇s disease （PD）. The mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 7 （SMAD7） is an inhibitory Smad protein that blocks TGF-J3 signaling pathway. The aim of this study was to examine the anti-fibrotic effect of the SMAD7 gene in primary fibroblasts derived from human PD plaques. PD fibroblasts were pretreated with the SMAD7 gene and then stimulated with TGF-β1. Treated fibroblasts were used for Western blotting, fluorescent immunocytochemistry, hydroxyproline determination, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling assays. Overexpression of the SMAD7 gene inhibited TGF-β1-induced phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of SMAD2 and SMAD3, transdifferentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, and quashed TGF-β1-induced production of extracellular matrix protein and hydroxyproline. Overexpression of the SMAD7 gene decreased the expression of cyclin D1 （a positive cell cycle regulator） and induced the expression of poly （ADP-ribose） polymerase 1, which is known to terminate Smad-mediated transcription, in PD fibroblasts. These findings suggest that the blocking of the TGF-β pathway by use of SMAD7 may be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of PD.

AIM:To determine the precise incidence and clinical features of endoscopic ulcers following ***:A consecutive series of patients who underwent endoscopic examination following gastrectomy between 2005 and 2010 was retrospectively analyzed.A total of 78 patients with endoscopic ulcers and 759 without ulcers following gastrectomy were *** analyzed differences in patient age,sex,size of the lesions,method of operation,indications for gastric resection,and infection rates of Helicobacter pylori(***) between the nonulcer and ulcer ***:The incidence of endoscopic ulcers after gastrectomy was 9.3% and that of marginal ulcers was 8.6%.Ulcers were more common in patients with Billroth Ⅱ anastomosis and pre-existing conditions forpeptic ulcer disease(PUD).Infection rates of *** not differ significantly between the two *** patients who underwent operations to treat PUD had lower initial levels of hemoglobin and higher rates of hospital ***:*** was not an important factor in ulcerogenesis following *** patients who underwent surgery for PUD,clinical course of marginal ulcers was more severe.

AA5454-O aluminum alloy plates with thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.0 mm were friction-stir-lap-welded (FSLWed).The influences of the tool plunge depth and welding distance on surface appearance,macrostructure and mechanical properties of the FSLWed plates were experimentally *** tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was compared with that of the adhesive-bonded ***-free FSLWed zones were successfully obtained in all the tool plunge depths and the welding *** FSLWed zones exhibited the relatively smooth surface *** all the FSLWed conditions,the FSLWed zone exhibited higher average hardness than the base *** addition,the upper plate exhibited a higher average hardness than the lower plate,although there was no special tendency in spite of the change in the tool plunge depth and the welding *** maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was much higher than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy ***,under the FSLW condition of the plunge depth of 1.8 mm and the welding distance of 40 mm,the tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate reached a level about 41% greater than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy *** addition,the maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate was increased with the increase of the welding distance.
