This work aims to develop simulation models that allow locating adequate areas for forest plantations in the state of Mexico. It combines multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) techniques and geographic information systems (gIS) to analyze and simulate future scenarios for forest plantations under three major objectives: commercial production, restoration and protection, and agroforestry. Results demonstrate the potential of this method to integrate different variables of social, economic and environmental nature, and for solve some problems of forest activities and management by locating the most suitable areas for this forestal activity.

This paper presents an assessment of land use changes and their impacts on the ecosystem in the Montado, a traditional agricultural landscape of Portugal in response to global environmental change. The assessment uses an agent-based model (ABM) of the adaptive decisions of farmers to simulate the influence on future land use patterns of socio-economic attributes such as social relationships and farmer reliance on subsidies and biophysical constraints. The application and development of the ABM are supported empirically using three categories of input data: 1) farmer types based on a cluster analysis of socio-economic attributes;2) agricultural suitability based on regression analysis of historical land use maps and biophysical attributes;and 3) future trends in the economic and climatic environments based on the A1fi scenario of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Model sensitivity and uncertainty analyses are carried out prior to the scenario analysis in order to verify the absence of systematic errors in the model structure. The results of the scenario analysis show that the area of Montado declines significantly by 2050, but it remains the dominant land use in the case study area, indicating some resilience to change. An important policy challenge arising from this assessment is how to encourage next generation of innovative farmers to conserve this traditional landscape for social and ecological values.

BACKgROUND The outcomes of Hodgkin's lymphoma(HL)in Mexico have not been widely *** and affordable treatments have been adopted in middleincome *** The aim was to evaluate long-used therapies for HL in Mexico in a long-term *** In a 34-year time period,88 patients with HL were treated at a single institution in *** were treated with adriamycin bleomycin vinblastine and dacarbazine(ABVD)or mechlorethamine,vincristine,procarbazine,and prednisone(MOPP).Relapsed or refractory patients were given ifosfamide,carboplatin,and etoposide(ICE)followed by autologous or allogeneic stem cell *** Thirty-seven women and 51 men were included;the median age was 29 *** were followed for a mean of 128 *** 310-mo overall survival(OS)was 83%for patients treated with MOPP and 88%for those treated with *** OS of patients who received autologous stem cell transplantation was 76%(330 mo)vs 93%(402 mo)in those who did *** HL may be less aggressive in Mexican population than in *** chemotherapy renders acceptable results,regardless of clinical stage.

AIM: To investigate the clinical impact of capsule endoscopy(CE) after an obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OgIB) episode, focusing on diagnostic work-up, followup and predictive factors of rebleeding. METHODS: Patients who were referred to Hospital del Mar(Barcelona, Spain) between 2007 and 2009 for OgIB who underwent a CE were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, current treatment with non-steroid antiinflammtory drugs or anticoagulant drugs, hemoglobin levels, transfusion requirements, previous diagnostic tests for the bleeding episode, as well as CE findings(significant or non-significant), work-up and patient out-comes were analyzed from electronic charts. Variables were compared by χ 2 analysis and Student t test. Risk factors of rebleeding were assessed by Log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression model. RESULTS: There were 105 patients [45.7% women, median age of 72 years old(interquartile range 56-79)] and a median follow-up of 326 d(interquartile range 123-641) included in this study. The overall diagnostic yield of CE was 58.1%(55.2% and 63.2%, for patients with occult OgIB and overt OgIB, respectively). In 73 patients(69.5%), OgIB was resolved. Multivariate analysis showed that hemoglobin levels lower than 8 g/dL at diagnosis [hazard ratios(HR) = 2.7, 95%CI: 1.9-6.3], patients aged 70 years and above(HR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.2-6.1) and significant findings in CE(HR = 2.4, 95%CI: 1.1-5.8) were independent predictors of rebleeding. CONCLUSION: One third of the patients presented with rebleeding after CE; risk factors were hemoglobin levels g/dL, age ≥ 70 years or the presence of significant lesions.
