The generation of functional retinal pigment epithelium （RPE） is of great therapeutic interest to the field of regenerative medicine and may provide possible cures for retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration （AMD）. Although RPE cells can be produced from either embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells, direct cell reprogramming driven by lineage-determining transcription factors provides an immediate route to their generation. By monitoring a human RPE specific Bestl：：GFP reporter, we report the conversion of human fibroblasts into RPE lineage using defined sets of transcription factors. We found that Bestl：：GFP positive cells formed colonies and exhibited morphological and molecular features of early stage RPE cells. Moreover, they were able to obtain pigmen- tation upon activation of Retinoic acid （RA） and Sonic Hedgehog （SHH） signaling pathways. Our study not only established an ideal platform to investigate the tran- scriptional network regulating the RPE cell fate deter- mination, but also provided an alternative strategy to generate functional RPE cells that complement the useof pluripotent stem cells for disease modeling, drug screening, and cell therapy of retinal degeneration.

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer. In recent years, its use has expanded to new indications. Viral warts (VW) are some of the most promising. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was carried out. Patients who did not respond to cryotherapy were selected and were occluded with methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) for three hours and they were illuminated with red light. Tolerance to treatment was evaluated using a visual analog scale for pain (from 0 to 10). Results: A total of 15 patients with 134 VW were treated. A complete response was obtained in 13 of 15 patients (87%) and in 127 of 134 lesions (95%). The mean number of sessions was 3.1 (range 1 to 6) and the average pain score was 3.1 (range 0 to 8). Conclusions: PDT is a treatment that offers good results in the treatment of VW that are resistant to routine treatment. The treatment was well tolerated in our patient group.

Peroxiredoxins （Prx） catalyse the reduction of hydrogen peroxide （H2O2） and, in association with catalases and other peroxidases, may participate in signal transduction by regulating intercel ular H2O2 concentration that in turn can control gene transcription and cel signaling. Using virus-induced-gene-silencing （VIGS）, 2-Cys Peroxiredoxin （2CysPrx） family and type-II Peroxiredoxin B （PrxI B） gene were silenced in nicotiana benthamiana, to study the impact that the loss of function of each Prx would have in the antioxidant system under control （22℃） and severe heat stress conditions （48 ℃）. The results showed that both Prxs, although in different organel es, influence the regeneration of ascorbate to a significant extent, but with different purposes. 2CysPrx affects abscisic acid （ABA） biosynthesis through ascorbate, while PrxIIB does it probably;through the xanthophyl cycle. Moreover, 2CysPrx is key in H2O2 scavenging and in consequence in the regulation of ABA signal-ing downstream of reactive oxygen species and PrxIIB provides an important assistance for H2O2 peroxisome scavenges.

This work presents a simple method to functionalise the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy by applying a duplex MgF_(2)/chitosan coating,which improves its corrosion resistance and provides it with some antibacterial ***,the effect of three chitosan solutions with different concentrations on the growth of the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae in nutritive medium(TSB)was evaluated by absorbance kinetics experiments,where the chitosan solution at 2%(m/V)was selected for the coating *** coating application,the AZ31 substrate was pretreated with hydrofluoric acid for 48 hours in order to form a MgF_(2)conversion ***,the coating was applied to the pretreated substrate through the dry-casting *** of the alloy in each surface condition(bare,pretreated,and pretreated+coated with chitosan)were exposed to simulated body fluid(SBF)for 21 days at 37°C,with the solution renewed every 24 hours and the wastes *** surfaces were characterised by SEM-EDS,and XPS after the immersion tests,whereas the stored solutions were employed to measure the change in the Mg-ions *** impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarisation were performed in each surface condition to compare their corrosion resistance in *** antibacterial activity of the functionalised surfaces was evaluated by the plate counting method and compared with bare *** results were correlated and demonstrate that the modified surface of AZ31 achieved a higher corrosion resistance when it was exposed to SBF,as well as a reduction of the bacterial growth during in vitro tests.

In any model, Sensitivity Analysis (SA) is a fundamental process to improve the robustness and credibility of the results, as part of validation procedure. Generally, SA determined how the variation in the model output can be apportioned to different sources of variations, and how the given model depends upon the information fed into it. Many complex techniques of SA have been developed within the field of numerical modeling;however, they have limited applications for spatial models, as they do not consider variations in the spatial distributions of the variables included. In this research, a variation in the implementation of a Global Sensitivity Analysis (E-FAST) is proposed in order to include the spatial level. For this purpose the conventional tools available in a raster Geographical Information System (GIS) are used. The procedure has been tested in a simulation of urban growth for the Madrid Region (Spain) based on Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) techniques. The results suggest that the inclusion of the spatial perspective in the application of the SA is necessary, because it can modify the factors that have a decisive influence on the results.

This paper shows a comparison between theoretical and experimental coverage analysis. Theoretical work is based on Okumura-Hata propagation model, which are compared with the measured data obtained through an experimental analysis en México City. It is important because all the network designers and managers have to take in account how the signals will arrive to the mobile devices. If they know it, they can install nodes B (base stations) in the better place in the area in order to take advantage of the power radiated by the antenna.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDnF) plays an important role in central nervous system development, neurogenesis and neuronal plasticity. BDnF is also expressed in several non-neuronal tissues, and it could play an important role in other processes, such as cancer, angiogenesis, etc. Platelets are the major source of peripheral BDnF. However, platelets also contain high amounts of serotonin; they express specific surface receptors during activation, and a multitude of pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory bioactive compounds are secreted from the granules. Until recently, there was insufficient knowledge regarding the relationship between BDnF and platelets. Recent studies showed that BDnF is present in two distinct pools in platelets, in α-granules and in the cytoplasm, and only the BDnF in the granules is secreted following stimulation, representing 30% of the total BDnF in platelets. BDnF has an important role in the pathophysiology of depression. Low levels of serum BDnF have been described in patients with major depressive disorder, and BDnF levels increased with chronic antidepressant treatment. Interestingly, there is an association between depression and platelet function. This review analyzed studies that evaluated the relationship between BDnF and platelet activation and the effect of treatments on both parameters. Only a few studies consider this possible confounding factor, and it could be very important in diseases such as depression, which show changes in both parameters.

This paper shows the procedure and application of the Krige Method (or Kriging) for the analysis of the power level radiated by a Base Station (also called node B), through a group of samples of this power level, measured at different positions and distances. These samples were obtained using an spectrum analyzer, which will allow to have georeferenced measurements, to implement the interpolation process and generate coverage maps, making possible to know the power level distribution and therefore understand the behavior and performance of the node B.
