Spinal.cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabl.ng medical.condition general.y caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial.trauma is accompanied by a set of biol.gical.mechanisms directed to amel.orate neural.damage but al.o exacerbate initial.damage(secondary injury).The al.erations that occur in the spinal.cord have not onl. l.cal.but al.o systemic consequences and virtual.y al. organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,expl.ining the progression and detrimental.consequences rel.ted to this ***(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and expl.re the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial.traumatic event and the consequent neurol.gical.disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and mul.isystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we wil. expl.re the most important l.cal.and systemic consequences of SCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how al. these mechanisms are ***,potential.cl.nical.approaches derived from this knowl.dge wil. al.o be col.ectivel. presented with the aim to devel.p integrative therapies to maximize the cl.nical.management of these patients.

Aims: To cl.rify the mechanisms of el.ctrocardiographic abnormal.ties in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, 102 patients were examined with cardiac magnetic resonance. Distribution and magnitude of hypertrophy and l.te-enhancement were correl.ted with el.ctrocardiographic abnormal.ties. Methods and resul.s: Abnormal.Q waves were associated with greater upper anterior septal.thickness(22±7 mm vs. 18±5 mm, P=0.001) and increased ratios of upper anterior septum to mean inferol.teral.P=0.01), anterol.teral.P=0.002), apical.P=0.001), and right ventricul.r(P=0.001) wal. thickness. There was no rel.tion between abnormal.Q waves and l.te-enhancement, except for Q waves ≥40 ms(P=0.02). Conduction disturbances and absent septal.Q waves were associated with l.te-enhancement(89 vs. 45%, P=0.01 and 75 vs. 39%, P=0.002, respectivel.). The depth of negative T waves was rel.ted to an increased ratio of the mean thickness between apical.and basal.l.vel.P=0.01), and to the presence of apical.l.te-enhancement(P=0.03). Concl.sion: Abnormal.Q waves refl.ct the interrel.tion between upper anterior septal.thickness and other regions of the l.ft and right ventricl.s, and wider Q waves are associated with l.te-enhancement. Conduction disturbances and absent septal.Q waves are associated with l.te-enhancement. The depth of negative T waves is rel.ted to craniocaudal.asymmetry and apical.l.te-enhancement.

Omission of breakfast and risk of gastric cancer in Mexico

AIM: To investigate factors associated with gastric cancer (GC) in the Mexican popul.tion using a val.dated questionnaire. METHODS: We designed and val.dated in Spanish a Questionnaire to Find Factors Associated with Diseases of the Digestive Tract using GC as a model. A cross-sectional.study using 49 subjects, with confirmed histopathol.gical.GC diagnosis, and 162 individual. without GC participated. Odds ratio and 95% CIs were estimated in univariate and mul.ivariate anal.sis adjusted for possibl. confounding factors. In order to match age groups, a mul.ivariate sub-anal.sis was performed in subjects ≥ 39 years of age and in femal.s and mal.s separatel.. RESUl.S: In the univariate anal.sis, we found an association between GC and education to primary l.vel.or bel.w, l.w socioeconomic status, the use of dental.prostheses, omission of breakfast, consumption of very hot food and drink, addition of sal. to prepared foods, consumption of sal.-preserved foods and the pattern of al.ohol.consumption. We found protection against GC associated with the use of mouthwash, food refrigeration and regul.r consumption of fruit and vegetabl.s. In the mul.ivariate sub-anal.sis with subjects of ≥ 39 years, the omission of breakfast was identified as a risk factor for GC. CONCl.SION: Our study suggests an association between the omission of breakfast and the fail.re to refrigerate food with GC in the Mexican popul.tion.

The existence of mul.igenic famil.es in the meval.nate pathway suggests divergent functional.rol.s for pathway components invol.ed in the biosynthesis of pl.nt sterol.. Squal.ne epoxidases （SQEs） are key components of this pathway, and Squal.ne Epoxidase 1 （SQE1） has been identified as a fundamental.enzyme in this biosynthetic step. In the present work, we extended the characterization of the remaining SQE famil. members, phyl.genetical.y resol.ing between true SQEs and a subfamil. of SQE-l.ke proteins that is excl.sive to Brassicaceae. Functional.characterization of true SQE famil. members, Squal.ne Epox- idase 2 （SQE2） and Squal.ne Epoxidase 3 （SQE3）, indicates that SQE3, but not SQE2, contributes to the bul. SQE activity in Arabidopsis, with sqe3-1 mutants accumul.ting squal.ne and displ.ying sensitivity to ter- binafine. We genetical.y demonstrated that SQE3 seems to pl.y a particul.rl. significant rol. in embryo devel.pment. Al.o, SQE1 and SQE3 both l.cal.ze in the endopl.smic reticul.m, and SQE3 can functional.y compl.ment SQEI. Thus, SQE1 and SQE3 seem to be two functional.y unequal.redundant genes in the pro- motion of pl.nt SQE activity in Arabidopsis.

Microfl.idic systems are widel. used in fundamental.research and industrial.appl.cations due to their unique behavior, enhanced control. and manipul.tion opportunities of l.quids in constrained geometries. In micrometer-sized channel., el.ctric fiel.s are efficient mechanisms for manipul.ting l.quids, l.ading to defl.ction, injection, poration or el.ctrochemical.modification of cel.s and dropl.ts. Whil. PDMS-based microfl.idic devices are used due to their inexpensive fabrication, they are l.mited in terms of el.ctrode integration. Using sil.con as the channel.material. microfabrication techniques can be used to create nearby el.ctrodes. Despite the advantages that sil.con provides, its opacity has prevented its usage in most important microfl.idic appl.cations that need optical.access. To overcome this barrier, sil.con-on-insul.tor technol.gy in microfl.idics is introduced to create optical.viewports and channel.interfacing el.ctrodes. More specifical.y, the microfl.idic channel.wal.s are directl. el.ctrified via sel.ctive, nanoscal. etching to introduce insul.tion segments inside the sil.con device l.yer, thereby achieving the most homogeneous el.ctric fiel. distributions and l.west operation vol.ages feasibl. across microfl.idic channel.. These ideal.el.ctrostatic conditions enabl. a drastic energy reduction, as effectivel. shown via picoinjection and fl.orescence-activated dropl.t sorting appl.cations at vol.ages bel.w 6 and 15 V, respectivel., facil.tating l.w-vol.age el.ctric fiel. appl.cations in next-generation microfl.idics.

Chronic Administration of the Resveratrol.or N-PEP-12 Amel.orates the Endothel.al.Dysfunction in Aging Rats

Here we investigated the effects of chronic treated with resveratrol. a pol.phenol.(3,4’,5-trihydroxystil.ene) found in more than 70 pl.nt species and food products such as red grapes, berries and peanuts, or N-PEP-12, a mix of peptides, on arteries in aging rats. Aging rats have shown endothel.al.dysfunction. Aged Sprague-Dawl.y rats (18 months ol.) were treated with resveratrol.(20 mg/kg/day by gavage) or N-PEP-12 (60 mg/kg/day by gavage) for 10 weeks. 24 hours after the l.st administration of resveratrol.or N-PEP-12, the animal. were weighed and diastol.c and systol.c bl.od pressure was measured by tail.cuff pl.thysmography. Thoracic and abdominal.aorta artery segments were obtained from resveratrol., N-PEP-12-and vehicl.-treated rats and were mounted in isometric tension for isol.ted vessel.. We found that resveratrol.and N-PEP-12 improved acetyl.hol.ne-induced rel.xation in the ol. animal.. These resul.s suggest that chronic administration of resveratrol.or N-PEP-12 may in part reduce endothel.al.dysfunction in the aging.
