An assessment of the challenges and capacity gaps in smallholder access to digital extension and advisory services(EAS)was made by surveying 197 female and 239 male farmers in kenya and ***-digital extension approaches remain dominant but at least 78%of farmers accessed EAS from electronic sources dominated by *** is attributed to the fact that ownership of radios was more widespread than of other digital *** that particularly limit the use of digital services included low digital literacy and prohibitive cost of internet and mobile *** and elderly farmers were more likely to report these challenges than their *** regression model results show that ownership of digital devices,participation in post-production activities,and access to extension were enablers of digital EAS *** mentioned gaps in obtaining information on crop pest/disease diagnosis and management,fertilizer application,pesticide safety and quality *** the diversity in smallholder technological capabilities and information needs,the recommendations made include integration of digital communication within multimode advisory services that use different but linked communication channels,continued farmer digital innovation capacity enhancement,and participatory design approaches that deliver relevant and actionable information for inclusive scaling of extension activities.

科技的进步彻底改变了我们生活的方方面面,包括金融交易的方式。一个重要的变化是交易方式从纸币到电子交易的转变。在移动支付平台的推动下,无现金支付系统在全球范围内获得了极大的普及。经济运行从现金经济向无现金经济的过渡带来了很多好处,例如便利性、高效性和更高的金融普惠。本研究以MCash乌干达有限公司的案例,旨在研究乌干达从实体现金经济到无现金经济的转变过程中金融科技公司所面临的挑战,以及克服这些挑战的解决方案。本研究既有定性研究也有定量研究。通过调查问卷、访谈和数据分析,本研究探讨了法律监管在乌干达实现实物现金替代方面所发挥的作用,评估了 MCash乌干达有限公司在推广电子支付方面所面临的挑战,并提出了可能的解决方案。研究发现,在乌干达转变为无现金经济的过程中,MCash公司遇到很多挑战,包括法律薄弱、网络欺诈、腐败、缺乏消费者利益、金融知识水平低、以及第三方参与。这些挑战影响了服务提供商和顾客,导致无现金系统的缓慢采用。为了应对这些挑战,该研究建议采取以下相应的解决方案,包括严格的交易法律、网络安全投资、严格的反腐败政策、金融扫盲计划、加强全部门合作、定期进行系统评估以确定系统的安全性,以及实施员工激励政策。本研究的案例公司MCash是一个杰出的移动支付平台,成功地改变了其运营地区的金融格局。了解这种转变的驱动因素和挑战可以帮助乌干达政策制定者、企业和个人在采用和实施无现金支付系统方面做出明智的决定。最终,该研究旨在促进金融普惠,推动经济增长,并促进乌干达的金融科技行业的发展。

Background:Human brucellosis is prevalent in both rural and urban Uganda,yet most cases of the disease in humans go unnoticed and untreated because of inaccurate diagnosis,which is often due to the disease not manifesting in any *** study was undertaken to describe trends in laboratory-confirmed human brucellosis cases at three health facilities in pastoralist communities in South-western,***:Data were collected retrospectively to describe trends of brucellosis over a 10-year period(2003–2012),and supplemented with a prospective study,which was conducted from January to December *** public health facilities and a private clinic that have diagnostic laboratories were selected for these *** prevalence was calculated and linearly plotted to observe trends of the disease at the health facilities.A modified Poisson regression model was used to estimate the risk ratio(RR)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)to determine the association between brucellosis and independent variables using the robust error ***:A total of 9,177 persons with suspected brucellosis were identified in the retrospective study,of which 1,318(14.4%)were confirmed *** cases peaked during the months of April and June,as observed in nearly all of the years of the study,while the most noticeable annual increase(11–23%)was observed from 2010 to *** the prospective study,there were 610 suspected patients at two public health *** these,194(31.8%)were positive for *** aged 45–60 years(RR=0.50;CI:0.29–0.84)and those that tested positive for typhoid(RR=0.68;CI:0.52–0.89)were less likely to have ***:With the noticeable increase in prevalence from 2010 to 2012,diagnosis of both brucellosis and typhoid is important for early detection,and for raising public awareness on methods for preventing brucellosis in this setting.

Growth and Development of <i>Cyperus papyrus</i>in a Tropical Wetland

Relative growth rate (RGR) is an important parameter in plant growth models. However, no field measurements of RGR have been made in Cyperus papyrus (papyrus) wetlands. In this study, the growth dynamics of aerial shoots were investigated in a tropical papyrus wetland. The aim was to estimate temporal changes in the growth rates, and also establish the effect of water level and temperature change on total culm number, culm recruitment and senescence. Dry weights of shoots during their life cycle were determined using a non-destructive method after establishment of relationship between culm diameter and dry weight. Measurements were made over period of seven months. During the course of the measurements, culm density significantly increased from 16.1 to 35.9 culms.m-2. There were significant changes in both culm recruitment and senescence. Maximum RGR of developing culms was 1.04 g g-1 d-1. Using a culm density of 27 per m-2, productivity range was 16.74 to 37.37 g m-2 d-1. There was an inverse and significant relationship between rate of change in leaf weight ratio (LWR) and RGR of the culms. In conclusion, RGR of the aerial shoot development was controlled by rate of change in LWR from 41 to 156 days of growth. There was a strong and negative influence of water level fluctuation on total culm density.

Major Ions in Atmospheric Deposition in Lake kivu Basin

This study investigated the major ion composition and sources in wet and dry deposition samples collected over 15 months (December 2017 to February 2019) at four stations representing four different land use/cover types on the western side of Lake kivu basin in D.R. Congo. The samples were collected every 13 days for dry deposition and two to three times per month for wet deposition. Samples were analyzed for major ionic components (Cl-, NO-3, SO2-4, Na+, k+, NH+4, Ca2+, CO2-3, HCO-3 and Mg2+). Electrical conductivity and pH were analyzed immediately in the field while major ion measurements were in the laboratory. Results showed the pH of both the dry and the wet depositions were higher than what would have been expected based on equilibration with atmospheric CO2 (pH > 5.6) at all four sites, with conductivity less than 50 μS/cm. The neutralization process in dry and wet atmospheric deposition is due to Ca2+, NH+4, HCO-3 and CO2-3. The anion: cation ratio in dry deposition was close to 1 for Iko and Bukavu, and it was greater than 1.0 (1.1 - 1.2) for Lwiro and Goma in wet deposition. The dominant anions in wet deposition were SO2-4 and NO-3, found around the rural area near cement factory and the urban area near active volcanoes, respectively. The most abundant cation was Na+ followed by k+. The enrichment factors and correlation analysis suggest that the main sources of Ca2+, Na+ and Mg2+ were disintegration of soil processes, aeolian suspension of soil and volcanic ash, biomass burning and the cement/lime factory around the Lake kivu basin.

Coping and Caregiving-Satisfaction among Caregivers of Patients with Cancer at the Uganda Cancer Institute and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda

This study aimed at investigating the relationship between coping and caregiving satisfaction among informal cancer caregivers in Ugandan referral hospitals. A convenient sample of 436 consenting informal care givers aged 18 years and above were interviewed;a cross-sectional design was used. Because of the difficulty in defining a fixed population for this category of care givers, whoever was found at the bed side meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited into the study. A tri-dimensional coping scale (namely;problem solving, denial and venting) was used to measure coping. After controlling for all the relevant covariates (Patient’s age, sex of care giver, education of caregiver, respondent’s age, respondent’s education level, respondent’s education, respondent’s country of origin, respondent’s religion, stage of cancer, score on burnout scale), the venting aspect of coping had a significant effect on caregiving satisfaction (F = 1.83, P-value = 0.03). The above covariates accounted for 41.3% of the variability in care giving satisfaction scores (R2 = 0.413). Venting as a coping mechanism had a significant effect on caregiving satisfaction. There is need to pay attention to the coping strategies of informal cancer caregivers to enhance their care giving experience. There is need to help caregivers develop healthy coping methods as they participate in cancer care.

Spatio-Temporal Variation of Atmospheric Nutrient Deposition in Different Land Uses/Covers around Lake kivu

Atmospheric deposition of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus has the capacity to significantly affect the productivity and biogeochemistry of aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of land use/cover types on the atmospheric deposition of nutrients around Lake kivu. Dry and wet atmospheric deposition samples were collected from four different land use/cover types (forest, wetland, agricultural and urbanized area) at four stations (Goma, Lwiro, Bukavu and Iko) around the Lake kivu basin. The highest annual loading of dry total phosphorus (TP) was recorded at a station located in an urban area at Goma (4.4 ± 3.9 μmol/m2/yr) and the highest dry deposition of total nitrogen (TN) was recorded at Iko (84.5 ± 41.2 μmol/m2/yr). High wet TP and TN were at Bukavu (0.7 ± 1.1 μmol/m2/yr) and Iko (21.7 ± 34.7 μmol/m2/yr) respectively. High dry TP loads were recorded in the forest area of Goma and the highest dry TN at Lwiro. High wet TP loads were record in agriculture at Goma and high values of wet TN in agriculture at Iko. Phosphorus and nitrogen deposition rates around Lake kivu were similar to those reported for other African lakes. The highest rate of TP was recorded mainly in the forest area for dry deposition while high TN was recorded in all types of land use/cover in the basin. This study found out that forest traps high concentration of nutrient than other land uses/covers.
