Does offering only the spherical contact lens trial to the low astigmats mislead the practitioners?

AIM:To compare the visual acuity(VA),comfort,and patient preference in a soft toric contact lens(TCL)versus soft spherical contact lens(SCL)in low astigmatic subjects during the contact lens(CL)***:This subject-masked,block randomized,2×2 crossover study recruited 40 neophyte subjects(80 eyes)aged 18 to 33 y with astigmatism in the range of 0.75-1.25 D with or without spherical power from-6.00 D to+6.00 *** participants were scheduled for two days CL trial and were fitted with the best-fit SCL and *** 4 h of wear,they were assessed objectively for high contrast VA and subjective vision,comfort,and ***:The responses of 36 subjects(response rate 90%)with a mean age of 23.02±2.97 y(range 18 to 33 y)were ***-line improvement of monocular VA in the logMAR chart was reported to TCL as compared to SCL(-0.044±0.06 vs 0.04±0.03 logMAR,P=0.01)but the binocular vision remained similar(-0.12±0.07 vs-0.14±0.04 logMAR,P=0.38).Subjects felt a noticeable difference in clarity when shifted to TCL as compared to the *** satisfaction with vision(vision quality)was significantly better with TCL(P=0.03).The fatigue with TCL was graded less at 2.5±0.6,compared to SCL at 4.6±1.3(P=0.04).Thirty-three participants(91.6%)preferred to use contact lens of which 26 participants(79%)preferred ***:The findings suggest that VA and comfort are better with TCL as compared to SCL which is only observed if the patient was offered both offering SCL with spherical equivalent power alone as the first option can mislead the practitioner;TCL trial should be the first choice of the lens in low-to-moderate astigmatism.

Role of autophagy in bone and muscle biology

Autophagy in eukaryotic cells is a constitutive process and functions as a homeostatic mechanism; it is up-regulated in response to specific stress stimuli such as starvation, hypoxia and as oxidative stress. In addition to playing a crucial role in adaptive responses to different stimuli, autophagy is also required for intracellular quality control. This second aspect is important to prevent the activation of pathological processes. Autophagy also plays a central role in cellular development and differentiation because it is involved in the regulation of energetic balance. This final aspect is critical for maintaining proper bone and muscle function as well as to prevent any pathological changes. Therefore, identifying new molecular targets involved in autophagy is critical to assure a good quality of life.

On February 11,2020,the World Health Organization officially announced the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),as an emerging recent pandemic illness,which currently has approximately taken the life of two million persons in more than 200 ***,clinical,and scientific efforts have focused on searching for new prevention and treatment *** medicine and tissue engineering focused on using stem cells(SCs)have become a promising tool,and the regenerative and immunoregulatory capabilities of mesenchymal SCs(MSCs)and their exosomes have been ***,it has been essential to establishing models to reproduce the viral life cycle and mimic the pathology of COVID-19 to understand the virus's *** fields of pluripotent SCs(PSCs),induced PSCs(iPSCs),and artificial iPSCs have been used for this purpose in the development of infection models or ***,some inconveniences have been declared in SC use;for example,it has been reported that SARS-CoV-2 enters human cells through the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor,which is highly expressed in MSCs,so it is important to continue investigating the employment of SCs in COVID-19,taking into consideration their advantages and *** this review,we expose the use of different kinds of SCs and their derivatives for studying the SARS-CoV-2 behavior and develop treatments to counter COVID-19.

Characterization and electrochemical performance of CeO2 and Eu-doped CeO2 films as a manganese redox flow battery component

Hexagonal CeO2 and Eu-doped CeO2 nanoparticles were obtained using a facile microwave-hydro thermal method under mild conditions and their application towards manganese redox flow battery component were studied. The structural properties were studied by X-ray diffraction and indicate that samples present a fluorite structure. Raman spectroscopy shows Eu3＋ ions substitute Ce4＋ and generate oxygen vacancies. Electrochemical properties of pure and Eu-doped CeO2 films deposited at graphite substrates investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge indicate that dopant concentration affects the electrochemical properties of CeO2. The increase in the reversibility redox of electrochemical systems observed is attributed to coexistence of Ce4＋/Ce3＋ redox couple confirmed by ***-discharge tests display coulombic and voltage efficiency values of above 80% and 90%, respectively. The obtained specific capacity for Ce（0.99）Eu（0.01）O2（372.49 mAh/g） and pure oxide（334.84 mAh/g）indicates that both samples are promising for application in Mn-batteries.

We developed a procedure to prepare luminescent LiYF_(4):Yb/LiYF_(4) and LiYF_(4):Yb,Er/LiYF_(4) core/shell nanocrystals with a size of approximately 40 nm revealing luminescence decay times of the dopant ions that approach those of high-quality laser crystals of LiYF_(4):Yb(Yb:YLF)and LiYF_(4):Yb,Er(Yb,Er:YLF)with identical doping *** the luminescence decay times of Yb^(3+)and Er^(3+)are known to be very sensitive to the presence of quenchers,the long decay times of the core/shell nanocrystals indicate a very low number of defects in the core particles and at the core/shell *** improvement in the performance was achieved by introducing two important modifications in the commonly used oleic acid based ***,the shell was prepared via a newly developed method characterized by a very low nucleation rate for particles of pure LiYF_(4) shell ***,anhydrous acetates were used as precursors and additional drying steps were applied to reduce the incorporation of OH−in the crystal lattice,known to quench the emission of Yb^(3+)*** power density(P)-dependent absolute measurements of the upconversion luminescence quantum yield(ΦUC)of LiYF_(4):Yb,Er/LiYF_(4) core/shell particles reveal a maximum value of 1.25%at P of 180 W·cm^(−2).Although lower than the values reported for NaYF4:18%Yb,2%Er core/shell nanocrystals with comparable sizes,theseΦUC values are the highest reported so far for LiYF_(4):18%Yb,2%Er/LiYF_(4) nanocrystals without additional *** improvements may nevertheless be possible by optimizing the dopant concentrations in the LiYF_(4) nanocrystals.

Mindfulness interventions during pregnancy:A narrative review

Pregnancy is a period of major transformations in a woman’s life;increased stress,and mood and sleep disorders are *** review evaluates mindfulness interventions during pregnancy and their ability to help manage stress,anxiety,depression,emotional regulation,level of mindfulness and sleep quality.A search of English language scientific literature relevant to mindfulness interventions for pregnant women was conducted using PubMed,Scopus and Web of Science,without restriction on publication *** criteria were randomized clinical trials with pregnant women,using mindfulness as an intervention for at least three weeks,in one of our main areas of interest,and using only validated scales to measure *** hundred and thirty studies were identified in our searches of research databases,and thirteen were included in our *** found a large diversity of mindfulness programs,heterogeneity among the instruments used to evaluate outcomes,and inconsistency in the gestational periods used in the *** interventions were beneficial for stress,anxiety and *** was also effective when applied in pregnant women with a history of depression or experiencing *** emotional regulation and the level of mindfulness,there were signs of improvement,but more studies are *** of the studies evaluated sleep *** review provides information about current mindfulness programs,an overview of the effects of mindfulness interventions,a description of the measurements used so far,and recommendations for developing highquality mindfulness protocols for pregnant women.

The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a medium-sized car nivore that experienced remarkable geographic expansion over the last 3 decades in the Iberian Peninsula. In this study, we investigated the association of species-related and abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed the relationship of body con dition, sex, age, seas on, and envir onmental conditi ons with splee n weight established for 508 hunted specimens. Our results indicate that the effects of sex and season outweigh those of all other variables, including body condition. Spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and heavier spleens are more likely to be found in spring, coinciding with the highest period of investment in reproduction due to mating, gestation, birth, and lactation. Coupled with the absence of an effect of body condition, our findi ngs suggest that splee n weight variation in this species is mostly influe need by lifehistory traits linked to reproduction, rather than overall energy availability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and prompt further research focusing on this topic.

Exploring the food-gut axis in immunotherapy response of cancer patients

Nowadays,immunotherapy is widely used to treat different cancer types as it boosts the body's natural defenses against the malignancy,with lower risk of adverse events compared to the traditional *** immune system is able to control cancer growth but,unfortunately,many cancers take advantage of immune checkpoints pathways for the immune *** intricate network of factors including tumor,host and environmental variables influence the individual response to immune checkpoints’*** them,the gut microbiota(GM)has recently gained increasing attention because of its emerging role as a modulator of the immune *** studies analyzed the diversities between immunotherapy-sensitive and immunotherapy-resistant cohorts,evidencing that particular GM profiles were closely associated to treatment *** addition,other data documented that interventional GM modulation could effectively enhance efficacy and relieve resistance during immunotherapy *** represents one of the major GM determinants,and ongoing studies are examining the role of the food-gut axis in immunotherapy ***,we review recent studies that described how variations of the GM affects patient’s responsivity to anti-cancer immunotherapy and how diet-related factors impact on the GM modulation in cancer,outlining potential future clinical directions of these recent findings.
