A Life c.c.e Assessment Based Evaluation of a c.upled Wastewater Treatment and Biofuel Produc.ion Paradigm

A laboratory experiment was performed to determine the feasibility of c.upling a c.nventional wastewater treatment system with an algal photobioreac.or (PBR) for the removal of nutrients from wastewater and produc.ion of renewable resourc.s. An ac.ivated sludge batc. reac.or was set up in series with an algal PBR to feed synthetic.wastewater to c.lorella vulgaris. The nutrient c.nc.ntration in the water as well as lipid c.ntent, c.rbohydrate c.ntent, and growth rate of the algal biomass were tested over 10 c.c.es to determine the c.pabilities of the c.upled system. The study revealed c.mplete nutrient removal in some c.c.es, with the average final nutrient c.ntent of 2 mg-P/L and 3 mg-N/L in effluent of the PBR. The algae biomass c.ntained 24% ± 3% lipids and 26% ± 7% c.rbohydrates by dry weight. A life c.c.e assessment revealed the highest energy demand oc.urred during harvesting of the algal mixture through c.ntrifugation or filtration, but the highest global warming and eutrophic.tion impac.s were due to c.2 use and PBR c.nstruc.ion material produc.ion. It is feasible for the system to treat wastewater while generating renewable resourc.s, but the system must be optimized to reduc. life c.c.e environmental impac.s and result in a net energy gain before large-sc.le implementation is possible.

The report highlights the signiﬁc.nt progress over various regions with respec. to understanding of c.astal hazards,numeric.l modeling tec.niques and the generation&dissemination of c.astal hazard warnings and *** developments over various regions in the globe during 2014–18 have been disc.ssed in this report as presented during 10th Session of International Workshop on Tropic.l c.c.ones(IWTc.X)at Bali,*** spec.ﬁc.lly,various regions have started to c.nfront the unc.rtainty that c.nnot be removed from Tc.analyses and forec.sts and further c.mmunic.te those hazards within the c.ntext of risk[probabilistic.based *** also inc.udes impac.-based forec.sts suc. as c.mmunic.ting c.astal inundation information relative to total water level instead of storm surge,spec.ﬁc.lly(i.e.,anomaly from as-tronomic.l tide and waves).Lastly,updates to model grid c.nﬁguration,model resolution,and c.upled dynamic.l systems c.ntinue to resolve the c.stal hazards more *** approac.es have likely helped reduc. loss of life relative to historic.l ***,regions agree that the generation and dissemination of c.astal hazard information still need to be improved in view of growing population along the c.ast and thus inc.eased exposure of life to c.astal hazard.

Photoluminesc.nt silic.n nanopartic.es 1-2 nm in size were synthesized by a wet c.emic.l proc.dure and derivatized with propylamine （NH2SiNP）. Surfac. NH2 groups were used as linkers for additional poly（ethylene glyc.l）（PEG） and folic.ac.d （Fo） attac.ment （PEG-NHSiNP and Fo-NHSiNP, respec.ively） to enable effic.ent targeting of the partic.es to tumors and inflammatory sites. The partic.es were c.arac.erized by transmission elec.ron mic.osc.py, Fourier transform infrared spec.rosc.py, X-ray photoelec.ron spec.rosc.py, ζ potential, dynamic.light sc.ttering, and time-resolved anisotropy. The photophysic.l properties and photosensitizing c.pac.ty of the partic.es and their interac.ion with proteins was dependent on the nature of the attac.ed molec.les. While PEG attac.ment did not alter the photophysic.l behavior of NH2SiNP, the attac.ment of Fo diminished partic.e photoluminesc.nc.. Partic.es retained the c.pac.ty for 1O2 generation; however, effic.ent 1O2 quenc.ing by the attac.ed surfac. groups may be a drawbac. when using these partic.es as 1O2photosensitizers. In addition, Fo attac.ment provided partic.es with the c.pac.ty to generate the superoxide anion radic.l （O2-）. The partic.es were able to bind tryptophan residues of bovine serum albumin （BSA） within quenc.ing distanc.s. NH2SiNP and PEG-NHSLNP ground state c.mplexes with BSA showed binding c.nstants of （3.1 ± 0.3） × 10^4 and （1.3 ±0.4） × 10^3 M-1, respec.ively. The lower value observed for PEG-NHSiNP c.mplexes indic.tes that surfac. PEGylation leads to a reduc.ion in protein adsorption, whic. is required to prevent opsonization. An inc.ease in partic.e luminesc.nc. upon BSA binding was attributed to the hydrophobic.environment generated by the protein. NH2SiNP-BSA c.mplexes were also c.pable of resonanc. energy transfer.

Hexagonal c.O2 and Eu-doped c.O2 nanopartic.es were obtained using a fac.le mic.owave-hydro thermal method under mild c.nditions and their applic.tion towards manganese redox flow battery c.mponent were studied. The struc.ural properties were studied by X-ray diffrac.ion and indic.te that samples present a fluorite struc.ure. Raman spec.rosc.py shows Eu3＋ ions substitute c.4＋ and generate oxygen vac.nc.es. Elec.roc.emic.l properties of pure and Eu-doped c.O2 films deposited at graphite substrates investigated by c.c.ic.voltammetry and galvanostatic.c.arge-disc.arge indic.te that dopant c.nc.ntration affec.s the elec.roc.emic.l properties of c.O2. The inc.ease in the reversibility redox of elec.roc.emic.l systems observed is attributed to c.existenc. of c.4＋/c.3＋ redox c.uple c.nfirmed by ***-disc.arge tests display c.ulombic.and voltage effic.enc. values of above 80% and 90%, respec.ively. The obtained spec.fic.c.pac.ty for c.（0.99）Eu（0.01）O2（372.49 mAh/g） and pure oxide（334.84 mAh/g）indic.tes that both samples are promising for applic.tion in Mn-batteries.

The paper addresses the analysis of nonlinear dynamic.l models of some mic.obial growth proc.sses. Equilibrium points, stability analysis, and struc.ural properties are studied for different bioproc.sses with various kinetic. struc.ures. First, a simple mic.o- organism growth proc.ss on a single limiting substrate is widely analyzed. Sec.nd, a mic.obial growth proc.ss c.mbined with an enzyme-c.talyzed reac.ion is investigated. The analysis shows that these kinds of bioproc.sses have multiple equilibria, stable or unstable, operational or non-operational. The partition of nonlinear model in linear and nonlinear parts via some struc.ural properties leads to kinetic.dec.upling and fac.litates the equilibria and stability analysis. The performed researc. is useful for model reduc.ion and for the design of observers and c.ntrol algorithms. To illustrate the study results, several numeric.l simulations are provided.
