Physiological, histopathological and cellular immune effects of Pergularia tomentosa extract on Locusta migratoria nymphs

The migratory locust Locusta migratoria(Orthoptera,Acrididae)is one of the most important pests due to its extensive and severe damage to crops in large parts of Africa and *** and ecologically natural products such as bota nical insecticides are emergi ng can didates for replaceme nt of usually applied chemical *** crude methanolic extract of Pergularia tomentosa(PME)was investigated for their toxicity and physiological aspects on *** *** showed that treatment of newly emerged fourth and fifth instar nymphs resulted in significant mortality and significant repellent activity with an LC50 value of 0.18 and 0.38%,respectively,after seven days of *** PME toxicity was also dem on strated by histopathological cha nges in the alime ntary canal resulting in con siderable disorganization and severe damage of the caeca and proventriculus *** extract induced cellular immune reactions which manifested by a significant decrease in the number of the differential haemocyte counts(prohemocytes and plasmatocytes)and important cell *** of biochemical analyses showed that the PME reduced the activity of acetylcholinesterase and induced the glutathione *** neurotoxic effect was confirmed by the histological alterations in the brain structure,particularly in the neurosecretory cells showing typical signs of cell necrosis.

Two mitochondrial haplotypes in Pterochloroides persicae （Hemiptera： Aphididae： Lachninae） associated with different feeding sites

Pterochloroides persicae （Cholodkovsky） is an aphid species belonging to the subfamily Lachninae that uses different members of Rosaceae （specially Prunus spp.） as hosts. Partial sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 （COI） and the nuclear long-wave opsin genes were obtained for approximately 100 P. persicae aphid individuals sampled from 34 colonies collected mainly in Tunisia and other Mediterranean locations. The variability found at the mitochondrial locus revealed the presence of two maternal haplotypes in the studied area that differed in a single nucleotide. The nuclear gene analyzed, however, failed to reveal any variability in this species. The variability found at the COI locus was related to the season of aphid sampling and with the site of feeding, with haplotype I mostly detected in samples collected in spring and summer on trunks and branches and haplotype II only detected in aphids collected in autumn on roots. The observed pattern of molecular variation suggests the presence of two clonal races of P. persicae coexisting in the studied area differentially adapted to conditions prevalent in the alternative seasons and/or to different feeding sites.

The importance of this study lies in the in-depth exploration of the ecological diversity of otoliths in Elopes lacerta, based on the analysis of data from 260 individuals collected from various sites, including the Porto Novo lagoon, the Cotonou lagoon, Lake Nokou, and the Atlantic coast in southern benin. The results highlight significant variations in otolith morphology, establishing relevant links with the biological parameters of the fish at each site. Exploration of the asymmetry between the right and left sides reveals notable distinctions between these two aspects. Analysis of otolith shape thus emerges as a valuable tool for discriminating between stocks and providing a better understanding of ecological variations. The local diversity observed highlights the crucial importance of implementing adaptive management strategies to ensure effective conservation of the species and its habitat.

Evaluation of an ＂Attract and Kill＂ System to Combat Ceratitis capitata on Peach Trees in Tunisia

Attract and kill （AK） technology was evaluated against the Mediterranean fruit fly （Med-fly）, Ceratitis capitata W.. Treatment was carried out in two peach orchards of four hectares each; first one located in Borj-Touil and the second in El-Kssibi Mornag, Northern Tunisia during the 2012 field season. AK is a specialized system based on hydrolyzed proteins and alpha-cypermethrin. During this study, 400 AK bait stations were placed in every hectare, four weeks before fruits color changes. The tested AK system was found effective in reducing the number of C. capitata population to 70% comparing to the untreated orchards. Fruit damages assessment showed significant differences between treatments in respect of decreasing infestation onto fruits Study results indicated that AK baited treatments were able to reduce dropped and soften fruits infestation seven times than that of control plots. Fruit damages were restricted to 4%-5% in treated areas with AK system in compare to 31%-35% recorded in control plots. This novel AK system showed good performance to combat Med-fly and can successfully used to combat various fruit fly species when applied for an area wide application program.

Objective: To explore anti-inflammatory activities of organic extract and its semi-purified fractions(ethanol, acetone, methanol/dichloromethane) from the Mediterranean gorgonian Eunicella singularis. Methods: The anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were evaluated, using the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model and the acetic acid writhing test in mice. The gastroprotective activity was determined using HCl/Et OH induced gastric ulcers in rats. The purification and structure elucidation of compound(s) from the more effective fraction were determined by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods and in comparison with data reported in the literature. Results: The fraction F-Et OH showed an important antiinflammatory activity associated with significant analgesic and gastroprotective properties. The purification and structure elucidation of compound(s) from this fraction lead to the identification of one diterpenoid and four sterols. Conclusions: These results suggested that components from the active fraction can be used to treat various anti-inflammatory diseases.

A seropositive nodular rheumatoid polyarthritis without arthritis, does it exist?

Introduction: The rheumatoid polyarthritis is the most frequent chronic polyarthritis. It affects essentially woman between 40 and 60 years old. Rheumatic subcutaneous nodules and tenosynovitis are usually associated with seropositive symptomatic rheumatoid polyarthritis. However, it is rare that they constitute the essential clinical expression of the disease. Case report: A 60-year-old woman was hospitalized for tumefaction of the dorsal face of the right hand evolved two months before. The clinical examination was found isolated subcutaneous nodules. The anatomopathological exam of one nodule ended in its rheumatoid origin and the MRI of a second one confirmed a tenosynovitis. Anti-CCP antibodies were positive. The patient has never suffered from arthralgias. The evolution was favourable under corticosteroid therapy, methotrexate and colchicine. Discussion: Rheumatic subcutaneous nodules and tenosynovitis are usually associated with seropositive symptomatic rheumatoid polyarthritis. It is rare that they constitute the essential clinical expression of the disease. Conclusion: The extra-articular appearances of the rheumatoid polyarthritis must not be underestimated especially since they can constitute—even rarely—the essential clinical expression of the disease.

A Rare Entity of Accelerated Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Report of Two Cases and Review of Literature

Background: Accelerated-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (A-CLL) is a rare disease entity as it represents less than 1% of all reported cases of chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Moreover, it is most likely an under diagnosed entity due to its rarity and the non-standardized practice of lymph node biopsy in CLL. Purpose: The aims of our work are to establish the diagnosis of A-CLL and to study the prognosis and treatment of this rare entity. Method: here, we report the clinical presentation and the follow up of two cases of A-CLL. Results: Distinguishing Richter transformation (RT) from A-CLL is important as it may result in a major change in disease management. The prognosis of A-CLL is intermediate between CLL and RT. The prognosis is mainly poor due to a predominance of poor prognostic markers including an increasing number of p53-positive cases. Conclusion: To this date, no prospective study has been led to define the best treatment for A-CLL. The shorter survival of A-CLL when compared to typical CLL implies the need of a more aggressive treatment.

Severe hemorrhagic colitis in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia in the blastic phase after dasatinib use

Dasatinib is a second-line tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in patients with imatinib resistant or intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia chromosomepositive acute leukemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding may occur in up to 7% of patients using dasatinib, although, severe dasatinib-related acute colitis had rarely been reported. Here, we present the case of a 36-year-old female who progressed to acute myeloid leukemia after fourteen months of receiving imatinib for CML in the chronic phase and was treated with a dasatinib-containing chemotherapy regimen. On day 34 of treatment, the patient developed moderate abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea with mucous. Analyses of stool specimens were negative for parasites, Clostridium difficile , and other pathogenic bacteria. The cytomegalovirus pp65 antigen was negative in her blood leukocytes. A colonoscopy revealed acute colitis, and a mucosal biopsy showed nonspecific colitis. The patient was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, bowel rest and hydration, and dasatinib treatment was stopped. Her bloody diarrhea improved within 72 h. After confirming cytological remission, the patient received initial course of consolidation, and dasatinib treatment was reinstated. However, hemorrhagic colitis recurred. After discontinuing dasatinib, herhemorrhagic colitis drastically improved and did not recur following the administration of nilotinib. The characteristics of our patient suggest that dasatinib treatment can lead to hemorrhagic colitis, which typically resolves after discontinuation of the drug.

Impact of the professional exposure on the spermatic parameters and the results of ICSI at Tunisian unfertile couples

Introduction: The association of the professional exposure to the decline of the male reproductive function had been the subject of several studies but without arriving to one envisagement undeniable of its existence. The ICSI, technique of reference in severe male infertilities, is visavis unexplained failures whose environmental and professional exposure could be about its cause partly. In this work, we tried to highlight an association between certain factors of professional exposure and the deterioration of the spermatic parameters, then to evaluate the effect of such factors on the result of the ICSI. Materials and Methods: It is about a study of the exposed type—no exposed, realized through collaboration between the Unit of Medicine of the Reproduction and the Service of Medicine of Work of the CHU Farhat Hached of Sousse. This study was based on a questionnaire of which part of the items was collected medical files of the patients raising the general characteristics, the profile of exposure as well as the spermatic parameters and the biological assessment of ICSI. Results: Significant associations between the deterioration of sperm and the professional risk factors such as the exposure to the formaldehydes (p = 0.01) and heat (p = 0.001) were noted. The exposure to formaldehydes was associated at the higher risk of oli gozoospermy, of asthenozoospermy with a significant reduction in mobility (p = 0.05), whereas the talks with cement had a risk higher of teratozoospermy. In addition an exposure to heat was associated at the high risk of oligoteratozoospermy. The total rate of pregnancies after ICSI among 220 patients of our series was of 14.47%. The ICSI balance showed a reduction in total fertility rate (76.6% exposed vs 75.3% no exposed). Conclusion: In spite of the limited number of the patients, this study had shown a correlation between certain professional exposures of origin and the deterioration of sperm.
