Background:School health program(SHP)is the most cost-effective investment a nation can make to simultaneously improve education and health conditions of her *** spite of this,the adoption of SHP in developing countries is still below set ***,this study assesses the operations of SHP in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area(LGA),Benin City,*** and Methods:A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with accidental sampling method to select 56 school health teachers from secondary schools in Egor LGA.A self-structured instrument was used to collect data based on the research *** collected were analyzed using percentages,means,and standard ***:This study showed that despite high level of the program awareness,the actualization of its objective was found to be poor,and this was found to be related with the lack of government support,lack of needed personnel and materials,lack of effective supervision of the program and inappropriate ***:In-service training on SHP should be provided to enhance the skills needed for implementation of *** government should provide needed materials and equipment and employ competent health personnel to take charge of the school health services,and other policymakers should mobilize and strengthen SHP and education activities at the state.

Durability of calcium sulfoaluminate cement concrete

Calcium sulfoaluminate cement(CSAC),first developed in China in the 1970 s,has received significant attention because of its expansive(or shrinkage-compensating)and rapid-hardening characteristics,low energy-intensity,and low carbon *** production and hydration of CSAC(containing ye’elimite,belite,calcium sulfate,and minors)have been extensively studied,but aspects of its durability are not well *** to its composition and intrinsic characteristics,CSAC concrete is expected to have better performance than Portland cement(PC)concrete in several aspects,including shrinkage and cracking due to restrained shrinkage,freeze-thaw damage,alkali-silica reaction,and sulfate ***,there is a lack of consensus among researchers regarding transport properties,resistance to carbonation,and steel corrosion protectiveness of CSAC concrete,all of which are expected to be tied to the chemical composition of CSAC and attributes of the service *** example,CASC concrete has poorer resistance to carbonation and chloride penetration compared with its PC counterpart,yet some studies have suggested that it protects steel rebar well from corrosion when exposed to a marine tidal zone,because of a strong self-desiccation *** paper presents a succinct review of studies of the durability of CSAC *** suggest that more such studies should be conducted to examine the long-term performance of the material in different service *** emphasis should be given to carbonation and steel rebar corrosion,so as to reveal the underlying deterioration mechanisms and establish means to improve the performance of CSAC concrete against such degradation processes.

Cytotoxicity and effect of extraction methods on the chemical composition of essential oils of Moringa oleifera seeds

Renewed interest in natural materials as food flavors and preservatives has led to the search for suitable essential oils. Moringa oleifera seed essential oil was extracted by solvent-free microwave and hydrodistillation. This study assessed its chemical constituents. Cytotoxicity of the oils was investigated using hatchability and lethality tests on brine shrimps. A total of 16 and 26 compounds were isolated from the hydrodistillation extraction （HDE） and solvent-free microwave extraction （SME） oils, respectively, which accounted for 97.515% and 97.816% of total identifiable constituents, respectively. At 24 h when the most eggs had hatched, values of the SME （56.7%） and HDIE （60.0%） oils were significantly different （P〈0.05） from those of sea water （63.3%） and chloramphenicol （15.0%）. Larva lethality was different significantly （P〈0.05） between HDE and SME oils at different concentrations and incubation periods. The median lethal concentration （LC50） of the oils was 〉 1000 mg/ml recommended as an index for non-toxicity which gives the oil advantage over some antioxidant, antimicrobial, therapeutic, and preservative chemicals.

Psychological Issues among Women Undergoing Fertility Treatment in a Specialist Fertility Hospital, South East Nigeria

Introduction: In Nigeria, a major reason for marriage is procreation and married couples look forward to having children within a year or two of marriage. The inability to achieve conception and subsequently have a child among couples may lead to psychological complications. Objective: This study assessed the psychological impact of infertility and its management on women receiving treatment at a Fertility Specialist Hospital in a poor resource setting. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 376 consenting married women who sought and received fertility treatment at a private Fertility Specialist Hospital, located at Abakaliki, South-East Nigeria between May 1, 2017 and May 31, 2022. Socio-demographic and Structured questionnaires were administered to the participants over a 5-year period. Results: The mean age of the women at presentation was 36.9 (±7.2 SD) years. The majority of the women (227) presented with secondary infertility accounting for 60.4%, while the rest had primary infertility (χ2 = 16.18, P = 0.001). Male-only factor infertility accounted for 22.9% of all the infertility cases, female-only factor 21.3% while both (male and female factors co-existing) accounted for 52.7% of all the cases. The commonest cause of infertility in the study was poor sperm parameters (176) accounting for 46.8% of cases, tubal factor 19.1% and anovulatory factor 22.3% (χ2 = 214.21, P = 0.001). Three hundred and thirty four (88.8%) felt depressed, 266 (70.7%) felt guilty about the past, and 222 (59.0%) had suicidal tendencies because of the infertility ordeal. Two hundred and fifty one (66.8%) felt inferior, 237 (63.0%) cried often and 174 (46.3%) were socially withdrawn. However, 10.4% of the women felt satisfied and well. These negative psychological feelings were statistically significant. Concerning the effect on marriage, the closeness of couples was reduced significantly in 57.7%, 62.8% had reduced coital intimacy, 79.3% had frequent quarrel

A Ten-Year Review of Primary Postpartum Haemrrhage at a University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria: A Case-Control Study

Objective: To determine the incidence of primary postpartum haemorrhage, identify risk/aetiological factors contributing to primary postpartum haemorrhage and review the different therapeutic approaches in the management of primary postpartum haemorrhage. Method: A retrospective case-control study of all patients with primary postpartum haemorrhage from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2010 at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria. Result: In the period under review, 272 cases of primary postpartum haemorrhage were documented while there were a total of 5929 deliveries, giving an incidence of 1 in 26 (25.6%). The average blood loss in the cases reviewed was 1550 mls whilst in the controls, the average blood loss was 200 mls. There was statistical significant difference between the grandmultiparous cases and grandmultiparous controls (58.4% versus 16.5%, OR = 6.74, p < 0.05), suggesting that grandmultiparity may be an implicated factor in primary postpartum haemorrhage. In the unbooked cases, retained placenta was the major cause of primary postpartum haemorrhage constituting 109 (51.7%), whereas in booked cases, uterine atony contributed 70.5% to primary postpartum haemorrhage. Four maternal deaths were recorded giving a case fatality rate of 1.5%;all were unbooked. Conclusion: Postpartum haemorrhage ranks high in the list of causes of maternal death and the case fatality rate can be very high. Prevention is the key to reducing the incidence of PPH and its sequale, with preventive measures based upon the identification of risk factors, surveillance of women at risk and seemingly not at risk and avoidance of procedure during delivery which could potentially result in complications.

Corrosion Behavior of Fe-Al-Zn Interphased Dual Phase Steel in Marine Environment

Intercritical heat treatment operation has been in use for the development of Dual Phase Steel (DPS) and has been found to improve the mechanical properties of the steel. In spite of the enhancement a limitation was however observed as to its corrosion susceptibility. In a bid to further enhance the corrosion resistance of the DPS while maintaining its mechanical properties, galvanealing operation was adopted which involving the immersion of the DPS into Al-Zn melt and subsequently subjecting it to annealing operation at 550°C. Weight loss and linear polarization technique were used to measure or evaluate its resistance in 3.5% NaCl (a simulated marine environment). A minimum of 3 samples was used per immersion time. From the result, it was observed that there is a general sharp decrease in the corrosion rate of the GAS as compared to the control sample. The sample immersed and allowed to dwell in the melt for 20 seconds and further annealed with a soaking time of 20 minutes exhibited the highest corrosion resistance. The polarization curve also shows that the substrate was generally passivated, and this is as a result of the Al-Zn/Fe adhesiveness.

The Functional Role of Garlic and Bioactive Components in Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Health: What We Do Know

Cardiovascular disease is a complex and multifactorial disease strongly associated with hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, reduced ?brinolysis, increased blood-clotting time and increased platelet aggregation. Among other confounding factors, oxidative damage is a major factor in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The use of garlic in folkloric medicine highlights the potential role in either preventing or delaying cardiovascular disease. Contemporary research reveals how garlic and bioactive components modulate the risk factors of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases thus tending towards validating a measure of folkloric claims concerning the functional efficacy of garlic. This review seeks to elucidate contemporary research attempt towards the validation of the role of garlic and bioactive components, mechanisms of action involved and to define its ultimate role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Some contradictory claims exist possibly due to the use of different experimental protocols/formulations/dosages of garlic. Overwhelming commonality of positive cardiovascular and cerebro-vascular responses reside among research studies thus offering compelling evidence in supports of the bene?cial health effects of garlic and components.

Geographical Analysis of Smoking in Leeds: A GIS-Based Location-Allocation Technique for the Optimal Location of Smoking Cessation Services

Smoking is associated with several illnesses in the UK. Smoking rate in Leeds is higher than the national average. Finding optimal locations for stop-smoking services will be a good place to start in reducing smoking rates. The study utilizes a GIS-Based location-allocation method for the optimal distribution of smoking cessation centres in relation to the spatial distribution of the smoking population in Leeds. The demand for the smoking cessation clinics was estimated based on the 2009 General Life Style (GLS) statistics on age and social class stratification of smoking rates for the UK. Leeds specific rates were then obtained from the 2001 census key statistics data on socioeconomic status and age structure for output areas via Census Area Statistics Website (CASWEB). The research findings show that spatial inequalities in smoking rate exist in output areas of Leeds. Poorer and non-skilled populations are demonstrated to have higher smoking rates compared with wealthier neighbourhoods. The study confirms the capability of GIS-Based location-allocation techniques to be useful modelling tools for determining the best locations for health facilities. The model allocates services in relation to the spatial patterns of demand in a fashion that minimises average travel distance.
